Title of Invention

A TOP ROLLER ASSEMBLY FOR DRAFTING SYSTEM

Abstract This invention relates to a top roller assembly. It consists of an axle mounted in an outer race or shell. Two sealing members are provided at a clearnace from each other. The first sealing member is provided within the outer race at the mouth end and has lip portion to envelop the axle. The first sealing member may be made of synthetic or natural rubber. A rubber used seal with a metal core may also be used.

This invention relates to a top roller assembly for drafting system.
In the textile industry, drafting systems are used for drawing out or attenuation of textile fibres passing from the feeding end to the delivery end of a card, draw frame, speed frame or spinning machine. Plurality of rollers running at high speed, draft the textile fibre passing therethrough. Top rollers are assembled with conventional arrangments like cots and are mounted on the top arm of the drafting system.
Conventional top roller assembly consists of an axle mounted on an outer race. Metallic ring seals and ball bearings are provided for sealingly fixing the axle on to the outer race. As the roller assembly moves at very high speed, this metallic seal is found susceptible to wear and tear. A defective sealing system allows entry of fluff and cotton waste inside the outer race and the ball bearing which affects the functioning and the speed of the operation of the top roller.
An object of this invention is to develop a top roller assembly which minimises the entry of cotton waste and fluff inside the outer race and the ball bearings provided thereon. This will help maintain the production rate and smooth and effective running of the machines. A sealing assembly has been developed which when incorporated in the outer race or shell of the top assembly achieves the above objective.

The outer race or shell is provided with a groove just below the axle entry point. A rubber seal having lip portion which envelops the axle snuggly is positioned within this groove. This prevents leakage of grease from the bearing as well as minimises the entry of cotton waste into the outer race chamber. Synthetic or natural rubber may be used for making this sealing member. Preferably a nitrile rubber polymer is used for making this sealing member. This sealing member may have a rubber seal with a metal core.
The lower portion of outer race or shell on which the axle is mounted is provided with an end seal. The axle is mounted within this shell in a conventional manner in a cage pocket provided with ball bearings and metal ring sealings. In the subject invention bearings with super surface finish is used to minimise friction and resultant production loss. The clearance between the conventional metal ring and the rubber sealing provides labyrinth sealing effect.
The top roller assembly for drafting systems according to this invention comprises an axle housed within an outer race, a first sealing member provided around the inner periphery of the mouth of the said outer race, the said sealing member having a lip portion which snuggly envelops the axle and a second metal ring sealing member located at a clearance below the said first sealing member to effectively seal the axle to the outer race.

This invention will now be described with reference to the single figure in the drawings that accompany this specification.
In this figure the numeral(ji) represents the axle which is mounted within an outer race indicated by numeralC2j . The bottom end seal of the outer race is (6)while numeralsCjO&ndQi)stan Though the invention has been described herein above with reference to a specific embodiment, obvious modifications and alterations normally known to persons skilled in the art are within its scope and that of the appended claims.

We claim:
1. A top roller assembly for drafting systems comprising an axle (1) housed within an outer race (2), a first sealing member (3) provided around the inner periphery of the mouth of the said outer race, the said sealing member having a lip portion (L) which snuggly envelops the axle, a second metal ring sealing member (li\ located at a clearance below the said first sealing member to effectively seal the axle to the outer race.
2. The top roller assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the outer race is provided with an end seal.

3. The top roller assembly as claimed in claims 1 and 2 wherein the axle is supported on ball bearings provided within the outer race, the said bearings having smooth surface finish.
4. The top roller assembly as claimed in claims 1 to 3, wherein the first sealing member is made of natural or synthetic rubber.
5. The top roller assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein the
synthetic rubber is nitrile rubber.
6. The top roller assembly as claimed in claims 1 to 5 wherein
a groove is provided within the mouth of the outer race, in which
the first sealing member snuggly fits.

7. The top roller assembly as claimed in claims 1 to 6 wherein
the first sealing member is rubber seal with a metal core.
8. A top roller assembly for drafting system, substantially as
herein described, with particular reference to the accompanying
drawings.
