A Water Soluble Film based package for packing Aqueous liquids and it's disposal system
Abstract
The invention relates to a Water Soluble Film based package for packaging aqueous liquids where in the Water Soluble Film (WSF) is soluble in hot water and is optionally coated with a hydrophobic material or a combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic materials or both and the liquid which is being packed is of temperature not exceeding the threshold temperature point of the coated or uncoated water soluble film. The inside coating which shall be resilient to the packed materials shall be made of water miscible chemistry so as to anchor well to the water soluble film, but shall break down during the process of final disposal of the package. The remnants of the package may be biodegradable. The invention also illustrates equipment, which shall enable safe disposal of the remnants of the package.
Definitions
For the purpose of this invention the following definitions are provided: Bio-Degradable
1. Bio-D Water Soluble Film (BWSF). Relates to any kind of a film,
generally known as a film in which the materials used for manufacture of this film shall be biodegradable or bio compostible within a

specified period of time ranging from 1 month to 36 months. The final remnants of the said film shall not be more than 30% after the specified period of bio degradation process, i.e. the non degradable materials so used within the film should not be more than 30% of the total film. The said Bio-D film shall have coatings or inks either coated/printed on the film or embedded within the film, which may enable the process of the Bio-D activity. Alternatively, the raw materials used in manufacture of the said film shall be bio-D or bio-C (Bio Compostible).
2. Bio-D is defined as the activity of bio-degradation as per specified test methods.
3. Bio-C is defined as the composition of the bio-compost as is known to the persons in the industry.
4. Inks shall mean inks needed to print the film for designs, logo, information or identity; or inks, like but not limited to, water based inks with dyes or pigments, or alcohol based inks or it's combination.
5. Bio-D raw materials shall mean such types of film forming materials like polyvinyl alchohol copolymer ionomers, polyvinyl alchohol homopolymer, non - ionomeric poly vinyl alchohol polymer, polymethacrylate, polyvinyl alchohol, polyacrylamide, polymethacrylamide, polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, polyethyleneglycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, pollulan, proteinaceous

binders such as gelatin modified gelatins such as phthaloyl gelatin, polysaccharides, such as starch, gum arabic and dextrin, water-soluble cellulose derivatives, polylactic acid, blended PE and PP, various thermoplastic materials like thermoplastic starch material (TPS). However, these raw materials are by no means limiting
6. Percentage of Bio-D shall mean the difference in weight of the starting cycle to the finish cycle within the given period of time. The method for such testing is explained in detail as part of this invention.
7. Bio Degradable film are films made by thermal extrusion, thermal cast extrusion, solution cast or any other method using bio degradable raw materials like, but not limited to, PVA (poly vinyl alcohol), blended PE (poly ethylene), PP (poly propylene), starch, thermo plastic starch, etc. or any combinations thereof. These films may also include Bio-D enhancers coated or embedded within or printed thereupon, shall mean any types of coatings, inks or embodiments within or on top of the film so as to speed up the bio-D cycle of the said film.
8. Aqueous Liquids shall mean any types of liquids for example, but not limited to, milk or fruit juices etc. or liquid solutions for examples, for not limited to, shampoos, liquid detergents etc.
9. Edible WSF films shall mean films made from raw materials like, but not limited to, polyvinylpyrrolidone, pollulan, proteinaceous binders

such as gelatin modified gelatins such as phthaloyl gelatin, polysaccharides, such as starch, gum arabic and dextrin, water-soluble cellulose derivatives, polylactic acid, various thermoplastic materials like thermoplastic starch material (TPS), HPMC, CMC, etc. However, these raw materials are by no means limiting.
These films are generally accepted as edible for direct consumption by human beings and animals. Products like, but not limited to, milk or Idli mix or pre-mixed foods or liquid drugs/medicines are expected to be packed in these film packages if the same has to be consumed by humans or animals alongwith the package itself.
Non Edible WSF films shall mean films made from raw materials like, but not limited to, polyvinyl alchohol copolymer ionomers, polyvinyl alchohol homopolymer, non - ionomeric poly vinyl alchohol polymer, polymethacrylate, polyvinyl alchohol, polyacrylamide, polymethacrylamide, polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, polyethyleneglycol. These films are generally not accepted as edible for direct consumption by human beings and animals. Products like, but not limited to, liquid detergents, or dishwashing liquids are expected to be packed in these film packages if the same has to be disposed in hot water along with the package itself.

Hydrophobic Coatings are coating systems which uses a single or a cocktail of aqueous based chemistries which after coating and drying form a film on the substrate which is not soluble in water but may disperse into water as it breaks down. Such examples are, but not limited to, coatings based in Poly Vinyldene Chloride or acrylic emulsions or Polyvinyl Acetate emulsions etc.
Hydrophilic Coatings are coating systems, which uses a single or a cocktail of aqueous based chemistries, which after coating and drying form a film on the substrate, which is soluble in water of desired temperature. Such examples are, but not limited to, coatings based on PVOH, Cassein, PHA, Pollulan and emulsions or combinations thereof.
Matrix coatings are coating system which uses a direct coating of both these above mentioned coating chemistry or by using two or multiple stations for coating and application of a film forming matrix so as to protect the packaged liquid and yet not allow the inner formed coating to become a non-soluble film in totality.

Background
Disposal of packaging, particularly of environmentally harmful packages, have been a nightmare for many countries. Many products have been put forward for solving this problem but usually are showing us the way towards landmass filling or partial bio degradation by compost method or oxidative method or by thermal method etc. This disposal of so-called bio degradeable packages takes a long time.
There was a need to have a proper package, which can be disposed off properly and nearly instantly, using the existing infrastructure of sewage system. Preferably the remnants of the disposed package should be recyclable, is also the need of the day.
Description and objectives of Invention
The invention describes a package to pack aqueous liquids having a temperature range like -20 C to + 50 C, preferably 5 C to 35 C and more preferably between 1C to 25 C. and a major part of the same package shall breakdown and dissolve or disperse in water having a range of temperature like 50 C to + 110C, preferably 55 C to 105 C and more preferably between 60C to 95 C. This breakdown and dissolution shall enable the remnants of
the package to be safely flowing into the sewage system.

This invention also illustrates equipment, which is proposed to be used as a disposal enabler. This equipment has been designed to control water flowing in and out of the vessel, precise temperature control for optimum breakdown and dissolution using minimum energy and a method of optimum viscosity control so as to enable the waste liquid to be safely disposed off in the sewage system.
Another objective of the invention is to prepare a packaging film such that the same can withstand the aqueous based liquid at specific temperature and which can be used on the existing packaging machines for manufacture of the final package.
Another objective of the invention is to coat the inner layer of the said film with a matrix of coating containing hydrophobic material having an aqueous chemistry while in uncoated form but shall convert into a hydrophobic thin film, which shall protect the contents of the package, and the same shall breakdown during the process of disposal.
Yet another objective of the invention is to coat the inner layer of the said film with a matrix of coating containing, combining hydrophobic and hydrophilic materials both having an aqueous chemistry while in uncoated form but shall convert into a partially hydrophobic thin film which shall

The invention will enable packaging of products like, but not limited to cold milk, cold yogurt, "lassi", buttermilk, Chocolates etc., and once the contents are emptied the package can be disposed off in an equipment as explained in the invention. The temperature of the solvent (water) shall be more than the threshold temperature of the dissolution point of the film, optionally coated film. Upon contact with the hot water, which has been controlled by the precise equipment the package shall dissolve or disperse or both and upon opening of the valve of the out feed tap the same shall flow into the sewage or desired location. The process of filling and heating water to it's threshold temperature can be repeated any number of times. The flowing of the dissolved solution containing the remnants of the package will be controlled by the viscosity controller before it's outflow. The disposal can also be recycled in certain cases by collecting the remnant solution and further processing the same to make it suitable for manufacture of HWSF using any of the above mentioned processes of manufacture.
