There will be a flexible link wound over the pivots of a fixed pivot housing and moving pivot housing in an alternating fashion with one end fixed to main housing while other end connected to door under test. Flexible link winding arrangement will enable the door to be pulled during door openings or door closing by a distance substantially greater than the stroke of the piston, thereby enabling the use of smaller piston cylinder assembly. Present apparatus can be installed easily either inside and/or outside of the vehicle cabin and can operate in different operating inside/and or outside of the vehicle cabin and can operate in different operating conditions. Thus present arrangement will make the entire test setup compact and flexible for any type of door and door functional opening for all range of vehicles.

PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION
The following Complete specification particularly describes the invention and the manner
in which it is to be performed.

FIELD OF INVENTION:
This invention relates to the apparatus for testing of vehicle doors for operational durability and functional requirements.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
In the automotive industry, testing of vehicle components, especially doors, is essential to predict reliability of door. For doors, functional durability and other tests are done by the repeated cycles of opening and closing of the vehicle doors. Since these cycles run into thousands, they have to be automated. For automation purposes piston and cylinder arrangements are used to obtain movement of the doors. However at present the piston cylinder arrangement is directly coupled to the door and the functional opening and closing of the door is limited to the stroke of the piston. Generally for low load and high stroke/travel requirements usual practice is to use, a telescopic actuator with balancing rod or normal actuator with external rod guide. Rope and pulley arrangement is also used in lifting tackle to gain load advantage and it works in load lifting/lowering against gravitational force.
US 5,902,941 describe a closure system testing apparatus for opening or closing a vehicle door of any of the variety of vehicles under test. However, door moving mechanism has to be selected depending upon the size and opening of door. This has following drawbacks, viz.:
a) Increase in size of door moving mechanism which occupies large premium shop floor space and hence not economical.
2

b) Due to complexity of door moving mechanism great difficulty in installing it inside vehicle cabin and not flexible.
In the present invention for vehicle door testing, the functional opening and closing distance of the vehicle door is not limited by the stroke of the piston but is achieved through piston stroke amplification depending upon requirement by using flexible link arrangement thus compact, flexible and economical.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
The proposed apparatus will have a piston and cylinder assembly fitted inside a main housing at one end. The piston rod end will have a moving pivot housing fixed to it, while fixed pivot housing is fitted to the said main housing at other end aligned with the piston axis. Fixed and moving pivot housings have individual pivots in each partition or groove or slot and pivots are free to rotate over pivot shaft. Pivot shaft may be pin, bolt, stud or spindle running through pivot housing partitions or grooves or slots and fixed to ends of pivot housing using nut or circlip or 'LP clip or split pin or press fit depending upon end preparation. There will be a flexible link wound over the pivots of a fixed pivot housing and moving pivot housing in an alternating fashion with one end fixed to main housing while other end connected to door under test. Flexible link winding arrangement will enable the door to be pulled during door opening or door closing by a distance substantially greater than the stroke of the piston, thereby enabling the use of smaller piston cylinder assembly. Present apparatus can be installed easily either inside and/or outside of the vehicle cabin and can operate in different operating conditions. Thus present arrangement will make the entire test setup compact and flexible for any type of door and door functional opening for all range of vehicles.
3

OBJECTS OF INVENTION:
The main object of this invention is to provide an apparatus for testing a vehicle door using piston - cylinder assembly and flexible linkages suitable for testing of variety of door types and its openings for all range of vehicles.
Another object of this invention is to provide a flexible testing apparatus for efficient placement of the piston-cylinders and flexible link arrangement so as to ensure a compact testing area.
Yet another object of this invention is to have a test apparatus to work in different operating conditions.
Yet another object of this invention is to have a simple in construction and economical apparatus for vehicle door testing.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
Referring now to the drawings wherein the showings are for the purpose of illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention only, and not for the purpose of limiting the same
Fig 1 shows the front view of the apparatus for testing of vehicle doors.
Fig. 2 (a) shows the winding arrangement of the flexible link over the pivots in the vehicle door closed condition.
4

Fig. 2 (b) shows the winding arrangement of the flexible link over the pivots in the vehicle door opened condition for piston stroke 'd'
Now Referring to Fig. 1, the said apparatus consists of a piston [1], cylinder [2], piston rod end [3], a main housing [4], fixed pivot housing [5] fixed to the said main housing, a moving pivot housing [6] fixed to the said piston rod end. Said main housing top face is provided with slots for alignment of said fixed pivot housing during fitment. Alternately fixed pivot housing can be placed outside said main housing aligned with said piston and cylinder arrangement. The said fixed and moving pivot housings have a single or multiple, partitions or grooves or slots [7] through which a pivot shafts [8] runs through. Ends of said pivot shafts are fixed to said fixed and moving pivot housing by nut or circlip or split pin or 'U' clip or press fitting [9]. Individual pivots [10], may be pulley or bush or sleeve made of metallic or plastic or self lubricating type material are fitted in each said partition or groove or slot of said fixed and moving pivot housing and is free to rotate about pivot shaft. A flexible link [11] may be rope or wire or string and is inextensible and said flexible link wound over the said pivots of fixed and moving pivot housing in an alternating fashion with one end fixed to said main housing and other end coming out from fixed pivot housing is connected to vehicle door under test [13]. Said main housing is provided with a bottom flange [12] having slots for alignment of said main housing with respect to vehicle door opening.
The piston cylinder assembly is actuated pneumatically or hydraulically in the preferred embodiment.
5

The fixed pivot housing [5] is fixed to the housing and does not move and the moving pivot housing [6] moves along with the said piston rod end and have a linear motion along with piston rod end. The flexible link winding arrangement provides maximum amplification of the piston stroke. The door pulling action during door opening or door closing operation is governed by the piston retracting inside the cylinder.
When the piston retracts completely into the cylinder it causes the flexible link to retract with it, but since the flexible link is wound alternately over fixed and moving pivots [10], hence the length it retracts is more than the stroke of the piston by a factor determined by the no. of windings of the flexible link over the pivots. Now referring to Fig 2 (a) and 2 (b), a fixed pivot housing [5] and a moving pivot housing [6] is shown, the distance between the housing is shown as 'x' and flexible link windings over pivots of the fixed and moving pivot housing are shown for three no of windings. When the fixed and moving pivot housings move away from each other by a piston stroke 'd', each winding will increase by the twice the length 'd'. Thus for a given stroke of the said piston the available stroke amplification for 'N' no. of windings of the flexible link over the said fixed and moving pivots will be '2NThe foregoing description is a specific embodiment of the present invention. It should be appreciated that this embodiment is described for purpose of illustration only, and that numerous alterations and modifications may be practiced by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is intended that all such modifications and alterations be included insofar as they come within the scope of the invention as claimed or the equivalents thereof.
