IMPROVED TAMPER EVIDENT PRESSURE SENSITIVE ADHESIVE LABELS AND THE PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING THE SAME

Abstract A process for manufacturing Improved Tamper Evident, Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Labels comprising of preparing destructible film by coating resin composite mixture on a silicone paper, wherein the said mixture consists of resin, pigments, binders and fillers. The said fillers are dispersed in resin using suitable dispersing agents, surfactants, defoamers and anti-fungal agents which are added to produce a homogenous mixture. The said mixture is then filtered before drying. The solvent based and water based resin composite mixtures are coated on siliconised polyester film or paper, thereafter an acrylic or rubber based pressure sensitive adhesive is applied on the silicone paper dried and then laminated to the destructive film and the interliner of the coated film is removed during rewinding. The said label so obtained is cut to desired sizes and shapes.

FIELD OF INVENTION :
This invention relates to a tamper-evident, pressure sensitive adhesive coated label having destructive brittleness or destructibility needed to show evidence of tampering.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR-ART :
The present invention is directed to tamper-evident, pressure sensitive labels which are useful on a wide variety of substrates such as stainless steel, aluminum, paper, paper-like products and various low surface energy plastic substrates such as polyethylene, polypropylene and other plastics.
Pressure sensitive labels/ adhesive films consist basically of three components, (a) a release liner, (b) a pressure sensitive adhesive and (c) a face-stock material. The face-stock material is printed on one side with device, mark, letters, logo, the intended decoration design or a message, whereas the other side of the face-stock material is coated with the designated pressure sensitive adhesive material. The function of the release liner is to protect the adhesive, act as a die-cutting base and carry the face-stock label through a converting process. Pressure sensitive labels are subjected to various converting processes or steps during their manufacture and use. The main converting processes include (1) coating one side of the

release liner with a pressure sensitive adhesive, (2) laminating the release liner to the face-stock material, (3) printing on the face-stock side of the label stock (4) die-cutting the label stock, if required and (5) applying the face-stock label to the surface of an end use product, often known as label dispensing and application.
There have been several tamper-evident films, labels, tapes, materials and devices applied on packages for pharmaceutical and foodstuff products. In addition, various types of labels are known which disintegrate to show evidence of tampering if they are removed from the applied substrate.
Disintegrable masking labels having a plurality of cuts thereon are known wherein upon tampering portions of the label remain bonded to the substrate and the part of the label fragments show evidence of tampering of the label. Another type of known tamper evident film comprises of a core layer and at least one oriented tamper-evident layer applied thereon. The tamper-evident layer comprises a mixture of a polyolefin, filler and/or particles, which induce cavitations upon orientation of the film. An oriented skin layer is applied to the core if tamper-evident layers have not previously been applied to both sides of the core layer. A tamper indicating labels are known in the market and the said labels consists of a delaminating film which delaminates internally between first and second major surfaces. The tamper indicating labels also includes coloured indicia printed on the major surfaces of the film and an

adhesive means for adhering the film to a substrate. A tamper indicating label comprising a laminate of a transparent outer sheet having a tamper-indicated, information-containing pattern printed on its inner surface and a pressure sensitive adhesive film coated on the other surface of the outer sheet are known.
In addition, various types of tamper-evident labels are made from polyvinyl chloride and cellulose acetate materials. Typically, these tamper-evident films are made using a solution casting process. The solution casting of polyvinyl chloride and/or cellulose acetate film is expensive and complicated and requires extensive handling of the solvent. A polyvinyl chloride and/or cellulose acetate material is dissolved in a suitable solvent and thereafter spread out over drums, belts, coated papers or the like to evaporate the solvents. Upon evaporation of the solvent, the solute loses its flexibility and eventually becomes very rigid and brittle. The rigid, brittle material is easily susceptible to destruction if any external mechanical stresses are exerted.
INVENTION :
Improved tamper evident, pressure sensitive adhesive labels consist of the following steps:-
(1) Manufacturing of destructible films are prepared from water-based emulsions such as acrylic and/or vinyl-acrylic resins having glass transition temperature, (Tgg) between -10°C to 20°C. or from solvent based alkyd or

acrylic or vinyl-acrylic/resins having glass transition temperature, (Tgg) between -10°C to 20°C , which are receptacle to printing and (2) the above said destructible films are coated with pressure sensitive adhesive which can be used in making labels, and
One side of the destructible films of the present invention is matte and the other side of such film is glossy or semi-glossy. The glossy / smooth side of the films provides a good surface for most types of label printing applications. The films can be converted to a pressure sensitive coated labels using pressure sensitive adhesive coating and lamination equipment. A suitable adhesive material is applied to the film to form the tamper-evident pressure sensitive coated labels.
The present invention, thus, provides a tamper-evident, pressure sensitive adhesive coated labels having the required destructive brittleness or destructibility needed to show evidence of tampering.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION :
This invention relates to :
(1) Manufacturing of destructible films, and
(2) Conversion of the above said destructible films to label stocks which can be used in making labels.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS :
The steps involved in the preparation of the tamper evident label are as follows:
(1) Destructible Film preparation consists of>
(a) preparation of resin composite mixture of resin, pigments and binders and
(b) coating of resin composite on silicon papers to get destructible film.
The said resin composite mixture is prepared by using pigments and fillers (60 - 70%) and binders (30 - 40 %). The said fillers are Inorganic materials such as Titanium dioxide, antimony trioxide, iron oxide red, iron oxide yellow, etc. and organic pigments : red, yellow, blue, green. The said binders are water based emulsions such as acrylic and vinyl-acrylic having Glass Transition temperature, (Tgg) between - 10°C to 20°C and Solvent based resin such as alkyd & acrylic having Glass Transition temperature, (Tgg) between -10°o 20°C.
The said pigments and fillers are dispersed in resin using suitable dispersing agents till a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Surfactants, defoamers, antifungal agents are also added to produce a homogeneous mixture. The mixture is filtered before drying. The resin composite so prepared are having physical characteristics as under:-

Solids content: 40-50 (%) {higher or lower solid content can also be used}
(1 b) Coating of resin composite mixture on silicone paper to get destructible film
Thereafter, the solvent based and water based films resin composite mixture are coated on siliconised polyester film or paper by the usual coating method on a coater. The mass weight of the coatings was varied from 50-100 g/m2 depending on the extent of tampering required. The drying was done at 100 -130°C. The film obtained can be glossy or matte depending on the film. resin composite mixture used
(2) Preparation of Tamper evident label:
An acrylic or rubber based pressure sensitive adhesive is used depending on the functional requirements of label. The mass weight of the adhesive is kept from 30 - 50 g/m2. The coating is done on silicon paper and the drying is done at 100 - 130°C and laminated to
the destructible film prepared in step 1. The interliner carrying destructible film is removed during rewinding. The adhesive coated destructible film so obtained can be printed by conventional printing methods and cut to size and shape for ease of dispensing and application on any substrate.

WE CLAIM:
1. A process for manufacturing Improved Tamper Evident, Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Labels comprises of the following steps :-
(a) Destructible film is prepared by coating resin composites mixture on a silicone paper, the said resin composite mixture consists of resin, pigments, binders and fillers , wherein the said fillers are inorganic materials and the said binders are water based emulsions ;
(b) the said fillers are dispersed in resin using suitable dispersing agents, surfactants, defoamers and anti-fungal agents which are added to produce a homogenous mixture, thereafter the said mixture is filtered before drying;
(c) the solvent based and water based resin composite mixtures are coated on siliconised polyester film or paper by the usual coating method on a coater followed by drying to get destructible film;
(d) an acrylic or rubber based pressure sensitive adhesive is applied on the silicone paper dried and then laminated to the destructive film as prepared in step (a).
(e) the interliner of the coated film is removed during rewinding;

(f) the said label so obtained is cut to desire sizes and shapes and the said labels so obtained are disintegrated upon tampering by hand or using solvents or using heat.
2. A process for manufacturing Improved Tamper Evident, Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Labels as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the said fillers are inorganic materials such as titanium dioxide, antimony trioxide, iron oxide red, iron oxide yellow, etc. and organic pigments - red, yellow, blue or green.
3. A process for manufacturing Improved Tamper Evident, Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Labels as claimed in Claim 1 and 2 above, wherein the said binders are water emulsions such as acrylic and vinyl-acrylic having Glass Transition Temperature (Tgg) between -10° C to 20° C and solvent based resins such as alkyd and acrylic having Glass Transition Temperature (Tgg) between -10° C to 20° C.
4. A process for manufacturing Improved Tamper Evident, Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Labels as claimed in Claims 1 to 3 above by which Tamper Evident Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Label is obtained.
