DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART Generally, the limit switches are designed to control the movement of a mechanical part. Jmit switches are widely used in various fields of engineering, especially for automatic and semi- jutomatic control purposes. Limit switches are widely used in industry to achieve automatic )peration of equipments. It is used to limit movement of machine / equipment in either direction 3S per requirement whether it is rotational or transverse. It is also used as safety devices in many jiaces. There are many types of limit switches, viz., lever type, wheel type, micro limit switches, ever type, cam type, striker type, spindle type, proximity type. These limit switches are used lepending upon the requirement and provision made by the supplier for different machines. In integrated siteel plant cranes, rope-transfer, chain-transfers are widely used for different jurposes. Here rotation of rope drum is more than one revolution, i.e., 360°. For example, otation of hoist rope drum in a crane may be 25 to 50 revolutions depending upon the height of he crane and diameter of the rope drum. Similarly, in rope and chain transfer it depends on the inear distance travel by the dogs. Dogs transfer plates in a plate mill. Spindle type limit switches are used in chargir«g car of l)last furnaces. Rotation of limit switch spindle finally connected to an slectrical contact that in turn disconnect or connects power thereby either stop or start depending Dn the command given to it or adjustment done on it. Examples of such devices are disclosed in U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,275,764 and 4,406,933. Additional switching devices similar character are disclosed in U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,317,687; 3,370,138; 3,539,738; 3,721,782; and, 3,882,290. US Pat. No. 3,721,780 dated 1973-03-20 to Kelly and Ward discloses a limit switch assembly including rotatable cam with longitudinally guided indexing nut and cam longitudinal displacement means. CN 2056542U dated 1990-04-25 to Xiangtan Electromechanical TRA talks about a limit switch for tower crane. KR 9504740Y dated 1995-06-14 to Posco reveals a limit switch weight for crane hoist. US Pat. No. 5,405,027 dated 04/11/1995 to Plass teaches a crane hoist system having a hoist drum, a drum drive motor and control and power circuit limit switches. The said invention involves a first trip t)ar coupled to the power circuit limit switch and a second trip bar coupled to the control circuit limit switch. The l>ars are vertically aligned arxl both are pivot mounted at their corresponding ends. The second trip bar is mourrted for movement independently of the first trip bar. If the control circuit limit switch fails to function as the second bar is moved a suitable distance upward, such bar contacts and lifts the first bar which, in turn, trips the power limit switch. In one emiMXliment, both tjars are straight and elongate and in another, the second bar is "U" shaped. US Pat. No. 5,362,029 dated 11/08/1994 to Kallenbenger describes a limit device for preventing travel of a hoist lift rope load atKJve a predetermined height. The said limit device includes an actuator mounted at a reference position adjacent the hoist lifting rope as it is raised and lowered by a prime mover. A switch is connected in a control circuit for the prime mover to place the prime miover in either a raise-lower m maintain the prime mover in its raise-lower mode when the actuator is in its reference position. A fi llower is mounted at any desired fixed position on the lift rope for travel therewitti. Lifting of a li ad above a predeterminied height will result in the follower contacting the actuator to move it ! Dm its reference position and cause the switch to place the prime mover in Its raise-prevent r lode and stop further lifting of the load. The conventional spindle type limit switches have several disadvantages over the present vention: () The conventional limit switches are costly, as it is imported. Though some indigenously developed limit switches are availat)le in maricet, but quality plays a vital role while used in industry. (i) Conventional limit switches are not reliat)le as the reliat)ility of those limit switches depends mainly on the material used, i ii) Conventional limit switches are heavy. So it's become difficult to take it to top of a crane by one person. I v) Conventional limit switches are odd shaped. This creates difficulties in aligning the limit switch over a foundation. /) Spare parts of the conventional limit switches are not available easily. So, repairing is not possible when question arises. >/i) Conventional limit switches use complicated mechanism in its set reset system. Therefore, the working principle is not easy to understand by common people. \/ii) Dust deposited on the mechanism of set reset system of conventional limit switches affects adversely operation as well as perfonmance of the limit switch, viii) Very fine adjustment is very difficult to achieve in the conventional limit switches, ix) Highly skilled personnel are required for maintenance of these conventional limit switches, x) Wear and tear plays an important role in the operation of spindle type limit switches. Wear and tear for these conventional spindle type limit switches are more as these use fibre / teflon in set reset system. xi) Conventional limit switches viz., tyf)e 62 SNE 411 have only 62 threads. So it can only be used for a very specific purpose. ;xii) Indirect actuation of limit contacts reduces its reliability for conventional switches. |xiii) Conventional limit switches require frequent lubrication for its bushes and springs. According to other heretofore known devices the angular movement of the spindle is transmitted through clutch, slotted disc and lodcing lever etc to the square shaft which when rotated to strike the limit contact block ased for cut off electrical power. Therefore, energy is transferred, in conventional spindle type limit switches, in two stages: (i)from spindle to square shaft, and (ii) from square shaft to the contact block. This reduces the reliability of the said conventional limit switches. The present invention seeks to mitigate or at least alleviate such inconveniences against users by providing a modified spindle type) limit iswitch for crane hoists and other similar rotating equipments. While the various types of limit switches in existence today have operated successfully, manufacturers of such products are constantly looking for improvements that will increase the versatility of the mechanisms, and at the same time can be manufactured at reduced costs. 3. Certain surfacj^s are shown in dashed outline and an alternate P' sition of the bottom block is in dashed outline. f g. 3 illustrates a modified spindle type limit switi:ih for crane hoists and other similar rotating (; luipments according to the present invention. S DESCRIPTION OF THE ADVANTAGEOUS FEATURES OF THE PRESENT INVENTION V ITH REFERENCE TO DRAWINGS COMPARING THE PRIOR ARTS A conventional spindle type limit switch has been described in Fig. 1. This is a commonly a mailable limit switch of type 62 SNE 411. Here the digit 62 designates the number of threads on t! e spindle of that limit switch. It implies that the limits will be actuated at maximum 62 revolutions ii either direction. With reference to Fig. 1 it is seen that there are two number of worm nut (7) fitted in the said : 3indle (11). One clamp (6) is fitted to each worm nut (7) that can be tightened by alien bolts (8) i Jitably fitted on it. One spindle casing (10) is fitted to the limit switch spindle (11). The said E Dindie (11) is fitted with two bearings and bearing cup (9) at both end to facilitate free rotation of (le limit switch shaft (2). One pinion (1) and a sprocket (4) are fitted on the said spindle (11) to ( rive the said limit switch after fixing it over its foundation. The said pinion (1) id fitted over a key I J) on the said shaft (2) to have a tetter grip. Two teflon gears (12) are mounted on the spindle- ( nd. These teflon gears (12) can tie meshed with another two teflon gears (23) mounted on a I quare shaft (20). A slotted disc (24) and a teflon dutch (14) are fitted on the said spindle (11) to I onnect or disconnect the movement of the said square shaft (20). One locking lever (16) is lounted separately on the casing (25) through a spring (15) to hold rigidly on the said clutch ssembly (19) during rotation of the said limit switch shaft (2). The square shaft (20) with four am-assembly (17) is mounted on the limit switch casing (25) through bush bearing (21). The lotted disc (24) is a part of clutch assembly (19) fitted on the square shaft (20) through a spring 15) as shown in Fig. 1. Four contact blocks (18) are mounted on a slotted contact fixing base 22) adjacent to the cam (5) in such a way that when the square shaft (20) is rotated, the cam (5) ictuates the contacts in the said contact blocks (18). This results in opening or closing of the limit iwitch contact depending on the position of the cam (5). The operation of the conventional spindle type linrvrt switches of type 62 SNE 411 when connected to steel plant cranes, rope-transfer, chain-transfers and described with reference to -ig.1, has been delineated in the following Iwo paragraphs. The limit switch spindle (11) is to be rotated by either output gear of a rope drum or by a chain hrough sprocket (4) as illustrated in Fig. 1 The womn nuts (7) rotate over the spindle (11) and nits at one end of the said spirKtle casing (10) de[3ending on the direction of rotation. This causes rotation of the whole spindle assembly including the teflon gears (12) and slotted disc (13) and the tooth clutch (19) engages spindle as;>embly through a lever (16). The mechanism follows detachment from the spring (15) of the locking lever (16) thereby rotating the square shaft (20) by 90°. This rotates the cam (17) and the limit swrtc^h contacts are actuated. The said contacts are connected to an electrical circuit that disconnects power supply to the driver of the limit switch thereby stopping the drive. Further rotation of limit switch shaft (2) is not possible thereafter However, there is no change in status of limit contact even if the shaft (2) is rotated by 15 revolutions. When the driver of limit switch illustrated in Fig. 1 rotates in other direction, both the teflon gears (12, 23) get engaged and the slotted discs; (24, 13) start rotating in reverse direction. This resets the limit switch clutch assembly (14) and the square shaft (20) rotates in opposite direction and the cams (17) strike the limit contacts. Hence the contacts get closed. This process of resetting the limit switch is most importaitt t)ecause the drive is now ready for use in both the directions as all contact blocks (18) are closed in this condition. Further rotation in this direction causes the opening of contacts at the en This happens when the worm nuts (7) hits the spindle (11) at the end of the threaded portion. In further direction, ^wo sets of contacts get opened during erxJ of limit. In the reverse direction other two sets of contacts get opened. The power circuit of the drive is connected to the limit switches so that power is cut off when limit switch gets actuated thereby stopping the drive automatically. Fig. 2 discloses US Pat. No. 5,405,027 dated 04/11/1995 to Plass. The power circuit limit iwitch 49 and the control circuit limit switch 47 are both mounted on and move with the trolley 21 The first trip bar 75 has its first or inward end 79 attached to a swivel mount 81 for pivoting novement about the mount axis 83. The mount 81 is rigidly attached to a support leg 85 The cable 77 extends downward from the switch arm 65 and is attached at or near the second, )uter end 73 of the bar 75. Unless lifted by an external force (as exerted by a rising bottom block !7), the bar 75 retains the switch 49 in the "motor-operating" position. Referring to Fig. 2, the second trip bar 57 has its first or inward end 87 attached to a pivot joint 19 and such bar 57 pivots about the joint axis 91. In one highly preferred arrangement, the pivot Dint 89 is attached to the first trip bar 75 near the inward end 79 of such bar 75 and adjacent to he swivel mount 81. However, the pivot joint 89 may also be mounted on the support leg 85, for example. Modified spindle type limit switch, aa:»rding to the present invention, is very simple in onstruction. A modified spindle type limit switch is illustrated in Fig. 3. It has a casing (111) made "om 6 mm thick M.S. (mild steel) plate on tearings end and 4 mm thick on other three sides. 72 ireads of suitable pitch are there in the middle portion of the spindle shaft (112). Bearings (125) re fitted on the both end of the said casing (111) to hold the said spindle shaft (112). Two sctangular nuts (113) are fitted on the spindle (112). To facilitate the movement of the nuts (113) ne guide rod (118) is fixed over two fixing arms (117) as illustrated in Fig. 3. The design of the : aid two nuts (113) are such that one end of a nut (113) is inserted inside the said guide rod 118). Two 'L'-shaf:)ed fibre actuators (114) are fixedly fitted to the said nuts (113). The said . ctuators (114) are fastened to the said nuts (113) with screws (115). Two thin metal sheets are 1 tted to each end of the said fibre actuator (114) by actuator screw (123). One flat iron (129) with : plurality of thread«3d holes (120) is fitted inside the modified limit switch casing (111). The height I f the said flat iron (129) can be adjusted through islotted hole situated at both the end of the said ( asing (111). The flat iron (129) is made 'L-shaped at both end in downward direction and fixed I gidly with bolt (122) at the both ends. This fixes the said flat iron (119) in the said casing (111). ¦ wo contact block fixtures (119) are fitted with a contact block (121) that in turn is screwed to the : aid flat iron (129). The said tvw) contact blocks (121) can be fitted and adjusted at different I )cations of the said flat iron (129) deperKJing on the requirements. Level of contact tips (110) is ; djusted in such a manner that the said fibre actuator (114) first passes through the bend portion (f the said contact tips (110). Due to lever action the said contact tips (110) get detached from the ( ontact block fixture (119) during operation. There are three adjustable-slotted foundation (128). These facilitate fixing of the modified limit ! i«itch. One key way (127) is made at one end of the shaft (112) to facilitate fixing of any coupling [ r pinion as per requirement. To fix bearings (125), two tearing cups (126) are fitted to the said [ asing (111). Four nuts with txjlts (116) are fixed to the said tvw) bearing cups' (116) end and thus t lere is no play of the shaft (112). Surclips are fitted on the shaft (112) near the said bearings (i25) to arrest any movement of the said t)earing (125) over the said shaft (112). Four threaded i locks (124) are welded to four comer of the casintj (111) to fix the cover of limit switch. f 1 DESCRIPTION OF THE BEST MODE OF PERFORMING THE INVENTION The principle of operation of the modified sfMrKlle type limit switch is now described with ispect to the accompanying Fig. 3. One pinion (not shown in drawings) of required teeth is fixed ¦: 1 the limit switch extension shaft (112). This is fixed near the hoist-gear box (not shown in i; awings) so that the output pinion of the hoist rope drum shaft (not shown in drawings) is r latched with that of limit switch. The entire limit switch assembly is fixed on the foundation near 1 ¦ rope drum. Care must be taken to ensure that there is proper matching of both of the said |; nions to transmit power to the modified limit switch when the said rope drum is operated. I- equired circuit connections are ensured to the contact blocks (119) of the limit switch. When the c ive is operated, the pinion of the said limit switch rotates and the said fibre actuator (114) I oves inside the said casing (111). During hoisting the pinion of the said limit switch rotates thereby rotating the said spindle ( 12) of the said limit switch. As both the said nuts (113) are connected to the said spindle (112), 7 II e saia nuis (tij) aiso move irom one eiiu lo uie umei. i m^ iiiuveiiicni is pci^acu uu lu mc nuic ;; :*uator (114). The said contact blocks (111) are adjusted in such a manner that during the c jeration of the hoist as wefi as the said limit switch, the fibre actuator (114) strikes the said c )ntact block fixture (119) thereby opening the fixed contact (119) due to spring action inside the i: )ntaGt block (121). This disconnects the entire circuit resulting in stoppage of the crane hoist. Lowering the other fibre actuator (114) actuates the other set of contact block (121) and crane I )ist stops immediately. Thus, prevention of hitting of the hook of the hoist, in both directions I ither hoisting or lowering), can be prevented by ac^usting the said limit switch blocks (111). In this particular limit switch, according to the jxesent invention, limit can be adjusted in the f illowing three ways; { i) by rotafing the nuts (113) over the spindle (112) after detaching it from the guide rod (118) a Id removing the fibre actuator (114); ( i) by displacing the contact block (121); and ( ;) by rotating the spindle (112) after removing the limit switch from the foundation (128) By adjusting the limit switch, opening of contact tips (110) in the contact block (121) is leisured when the fibre actuator (114) touches over the said contact block (121). Minor c jjustment can b>e done by displacing slightly the said fibre actuator (114) after loosening the :i ;rews (115) tightened on it. When the limit switch is used in crane hoist it is most important to adjust the upper limit of the I nit switch. Here more accuracy is required because the crane hook may hit the structure of the : ane thereby ceasing the limit's work. Therefore, the limit switch works in two folds: (i)as a stopping device against the drive, and (ii) as a safety device for crane and for the workers working in the vicinity of the said crane. The unique feature of the modified limit switch, according to the present invention, is the : esign of direct striking system. As a whole, the unkjue features of the present invention are as I )llows: () angular movement of the spindle (112) is converted to linear movement of the actuator (114); (i) fibre actuator (114) strikes directly the contact Wock (121) that is fixed horizontally in a ! sparate frame; (ii) chances of wearing out of fibre actuator (114) are avoided by fixing a suitably cut and I ibricated metallic sheet below the sakl actuator (114); ( v) for a smooth ride over the moving contact, i.e., to avokj jerks while actuating, slope is made i t the edges of the actuator (114); (f) chances of wearing out of spindle thread are reduced as suitable materials are used in I octangular nuts (113).
