A SINGLE MAGNET WATER TREATMENT DEVICE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a water treatment device comprising a single magnet to treat water for drinking, washing, and other industrial purposes.
BACKGROUND
Hard water passing through a pipe forms scales inside the wall of the pipe. These scales are due to calcium and magnesium salts present in water. Such scales impede the rate of flow of water and are undesirable in a number of applications like water heaters, chilling plants as well as domestic plumbing installations. The formation of scale on heating elements also adds to the cost of heating water. In case of washing machines, hard scales form on the heater and inner walls of the tumbler.
This is especially troublesome in areas where the water has a high mineral content.
Magnetic treatment of calcarious waters to minimize the scale forming problems associated with the handling of such waters is known. It is also known that such treated waters exhibit tendencies to remove previously deposited scales.
The prior art devices are not suited to convenient ready installation, and are troublesome for the typical domestic householder. Most prior art devices have a bulky and cumbersome construction and are not well suited for spatial constraints imposed by domestic plumbing situations. Others involve such large capital investment and external electrical wiring as to discourage householders from employing them.
In US patent 3,951,807 an elongated magnet having a multiplicity of longitudinally spaced poles enclosed in an inner casing of non-magnetic material, the latter being received within an outer casing of magnetic material. The water is subjected to radial magnetic field.
Also in US patent 4,146,479 an array of disc type cylinder magnets are arranged co-axially in a casing to provide an annular magnetic treatment zone in

the space between the spacing and array.
In the above-mentioned patents multiple poles of magnets are utilized to treat the water.
Usually multiple magnets are placed outside the pipes or some devices with multiple magnets are clamped on the water pipe through which water passes. Single magnet function could be one or more no of magnets joined together to increase the magnetizing power of the magnet. Multiple magnets mean more than one no of magnet placed on different location, where the magnetic flux is radiated from one magnet to other magnet, thus creating a flux path through which the water passes.
OBJECTS OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a water treatment device with a single magnet to treat water for drinking, washing, and other industrial purposes.
An object of the present invention is to provide a water treatment device to reduce the scale formation on the walls of water carrying tubes.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a device to treat water that requires lesser detergent for washing purposes.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
In one embodiment the present invention provides a water treatment device for imparting several beneficial properties to water by means of a single magnet water treatment device.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a water treatment device comprising a body made of plastic or other non-magnetic material for holding an assembly, said assembly comprising:
an U-shaped steel yoke,
at least one permanent magnet placed on one side of the steel yoke,
a bar of soft steel placed on the other side of the steel yoke facing the magnet, and
a tube made of non-magnetic material placed in between the magnet and the steel bar through which the water is passed through.
In an embodiment of the present invention a single magnet is used for the magnetization of the water molecules.
In another embodiment of the present invention, a single magnet to form a north-south pole pair by inducing a south pole on steel bar facing the magnet.

In case of single magnet direction of magnetic flux is in one direction i.e. from the magnet to the steel piece and is at right angles to the direction of flow of water.
In one embodiment the shape of permanent magnet may be of rectangular, circular, square or any other cross section. In one embodiment the shape of soft steel bar may be of rectangular, circular, square or any other cross-section.
In another embodiment of the invention provides a water treatment device, the device comprising a bar of soft steel of rectangular cross-section, a permanent magnet of rectangular cross-section, a U-shaped steel yoke, a plastic body and a tube (through which the water is made to pass).
The magnetic flux passes from the magnet to the bar by virtue of the U-shaped steel yoke and the magnetic flux lines are perpendicular to the direction of flow of water.
In one embodiment the steel bar is serrated one.
In another embodiment of the invention provides a water treatment device having a tube wherein said tube carries water which is to be magnetized.
One more embodiment of the invention provides a water treatment device, wherein the inlet water is heated before magnetized to result in reduced detergent consumption.
In another embodiment of the present invention provides a portable water treatment device comprising:
an assembly consisting of an U-shaped steel yoke, at least one permanent
magnet of rectangular cross section placed on one side of the said steel yoke, a bar
made of soft steel of rectangular cross section placed on the other side of the steel
yoke facing the magnet, said assembly is placed in between a inlet and outlet of a
thermoplastic body, wherein the inlet of the thermoplastic body is connected to a
water source and outlet is connected to an appliance.
The appliance is washing machine, dishwasher, boiler, laundry dryer, geyser, water filter and water tap or any other appliance. In order to reduce the consumption of detergents etc, the inlet water is optionally heated before magnetizing.
The device of the present invention has a single magnet effects the orientation of ions present in water and brings about chemical reactions those results in the formation of calcium carbonate (Aragonite crystals). The calcium bicarbonate (NaHC03) present in the water dissociates to form calcium ions (Ca++) and bicarbonate

ions (HC03"). These ions react to form calcium carbonate, carbon dioxide and water molecules.
The decomposition of calcium bicarbonate on heating proceeds as follows: Heating: -
Normal process: Ca(HC03)2- > CaC03 (Calcite) + C02+ H20
When the reaction is brought about by the magnetic feild it proceeds as follows:
Magnetizing:-
Magnetic process:
Ca (HC03) 2—-> Ca++ + 2HC03" —> CaC03 (Aragonite) + H20 + C02
Thereby, CaCC>3 molecules, corresponding to Aragonite and not calcite as in heating process, are formed. Normally, when hard water precipitates scale on the surface, the crystal structure is Calcite, which is hard and has a tendency to stick to the surface. The presence of C02 makes water acidic due to the formation of carbonic acid.
Aragonite crystal structure in flowing water is much finer than Calcite crystals formed in untreated water. They have the same chemical formula but have different crystal structures thereby having slight difference in their physical properties. The Aragonite crystals are very fine, flow with water and cannot form scales.
As shown in the figures for the Single Magnet Water Treatment Device, a single magnet 2 is placed on one side of the U-shaped steel yoke 3, and on the other side a steel bar 1 with serration is placed. In one embodiment to make the magnetic force much stronger, on some occasions, two magnets may be joined, but the function will be that of a single magnet. The magnetic flux passes from the single magnet (or, two magnets joined to function like a single magnet) to the steel bar. A plastic or any other nonmagnetic tube 5 is fixed between the magnet and the steel bar. The water passing through the plastic tube is subjected to magnetic flux generated between the magnet and the steel bar. As a result, the calcium in the water is transformed to Aragonite crystal and thus scale formation is prevented. Also the pH of water is brought down thereby making the water acidic. pH of input water: 7.1

pH of treated water: 6.5
The whole system can be mounted on plastic or other non-magnetic material to suit applications in water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers and water filters/purifiers, water tanks, geysers, water boilers, water taps etc.
In one test the single magnet device was tested by feeding the magnetized water of the single magnet device into a washing machine and using 30% less detergent in the washing machine i.e. 21 grams against standard 30 grams. The test result showed a wash quality value of 220. There was also an 11% reduction in alkalinity of final rinse water from the washing machine, which means that the detergent traces were much lesser on using water treated by the device.
In another test the water used in the washing machine was tap water i.e. water untreated by the device Standard detergent of 30 gms was used. The wash quality was of the value 229, which is close to the test with reduced detergent but using the single magnet device. This means in spite of less detergent the wash quality did not deteriorate. Similarly as there was less detergent in case of use of a single magnet device, the washed clothes had less traces of detergent. This has a great advantage since it prevents itching on the skin due to detergent traces in washed clothes.
The following table shows flow rate of a typical single magnet screw type device in comparison to multiple magnet devices.
