DESCRIPTION
The invention relates to a chill mould with two coolable wide side walls, which are arranged opposite one another, constructed as support frames and provided with plates predominantly consisting of copper and between which coolable narrow side walls displaceable relative to one another for the purpose of format width setting are mounted to be able to be clamped in place, wherein force means, the clamping travel and/or clamping force of which is settable, are provided for the clamping of the narrow side walls in place between the wide side walls, and the chill mould is arranged by its wide side walls, which carry the copper plates, and narrow side walls within an outer frame, which is stable in shape and provided for acceptance of the forces acting on the chill mould walls, while forming a force system closed in itself, wherein several, preferably four, hydraulic cylinders arranged to be able to support the wide side walls are fastened as force means at each wide side of the other frame.
A four-part chill mould is described, for example, EP 0 417 504 Bi. In the case of the known mode of construction the wide side walls together with a support frame form a unit, wherein the support frames are connected by their wide side walls by way of clamping elements and are adjustable not only towards one another, but also away from one another (spreading chill mould).
In that case the mechanical clamping e4ements can be tie rods which connect the two support frames by their wide side walls. For this purpose the spring-elastic tie rods are disposed in operative connection by force means.
The document DE 40 23 672 Al relates to a liquid-cooled chill mould for the continuous casting of metals, particularly steel, with a shape-imparting wall of metallic material which is fastened to a support plate and is provided with connections for a liquid for cooling the wall. In order to reduce, in the case of liquid-cooled chill moulds mounted to be able to oscillate, the mass to be moved with respect to the suspension thereof with inclusion of the oscillation device, and in order to be able to set higher rates of oscillation with lowest possible force requirement, there are fastened to the support plate - at the side remote from the wall and in uniform distribution at one side - spring elements which have in the same sense as the casting

direction a substantially smaller stiffness relative to the two transverse directions. The spring elements extend in a direction transverse to the casting direction. The opposite ends of the spring elements are fastened to a support plate, the support plate is connected with a stationary base frame and an oscillation device engages at the support plate.
A continuous casting chill mould with two oppositely arranged coolable wide side walls and narrow side walls adjustably arranged therebetween with movement play has become known by EP 0 276 418 Bl. A unitary narrow side wall is pivotably arranged at a spacer plate which is clamped between the wide side walls and displaceable for format width setting. The narrow side wall is articulated to the spacer plate at the pouring side and is resiliency adjustable relative to the cast strip below the articulation. A spring element is arranged below the point of articulation and between the spacer plate and narrow side wall, and one or two adjusting elements is or are connected with the spacer plate. An upper adjusting element is connected with the spacer plate and a lower adjusting element, which is guided through an opening of the spacer plate, acts by way of a spring element on the narrow side wall. Plate mould of a continuous casting plant is disclosed in US 4,516,622 and an adjustable continuous casting mold is disclosed in US 5,931,216.
Proceeding from the aforesaid state of the art the invention is based on the task of providing a spreading chill mould of the kind as described herein with such a design that an electromagnetic brake or agitator can be installed at this as needed and these can be moved in from the outside through the frame between the wide side walls.
The solution of the task takes place with the invention in the case of a chill mould of the kind as stated herein, in that the wide sides of the outer frame are constructed as an open rectangular frame by longitudinal members connected at a spacing by transverse support elements at the ends and that the hydraulic cylinders are arranged at the transverse support elements.
The afore-described design of the chill mould with an outer frame constructed as an open rectangular frame offers the surprisingly uncomplicated possibility of selectively annexing to a mode of construction of a spreading chill mould, especially an already

existing chill mould of that kind, additional units such as, for example, an electromagnetic brake or an electromagnetic agitator, which are required according to the kind of metal quality to processed and operating state and can be attached or demounted again by the design of the outer frame according to the invention without time-consuming or cost-laden conversion of the outer frame. The chill mould is thereby universally usable and suitable for a more rational operation.
Further refinements of the invention are provided in correspondence with the features as described herein.
Details, features and advantage of the invention are evident from the following explanation of an example of embodiment schematically illustrated in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing.
The spreading chill mould 10 illustrated in the figure 1 perspectively with a view from above comprises two wide side walls 2, 3 which are constructed as support frames and clad with copper plates 12, 13 and between which narrow side walls 4, which are displaceable relative to one another for the purpose of format width setting, are mounted to be clamped in place. Force means for the clamping in place thereof are provided between the wide side walls 2, 3, the clamping travel or clamping force of the force means being settable. The wide side walls and the narrow side walls are cooled in a manner known per se.
The spreading chill mould 10 is also usually arranged by its wide side walls 2, 3, which carry the copper plates 12, 13, within an outer frame 1, which is constructed to be stable in shape for acceptance of the forces acting on the chill mould walls 2, 3, 4, with formation of a force system closed in itself.
Four hydraulic cylinders 5 arranged to be able to support the wide side walls 2, 3 of the chill mould 10 are fastened to each wide side 7 of the outer frame 1 as force means.
The wide sides 7 of the outer frame 1 are, according to the teaching of the invention, constructed as a rectangular frame by longitudinal members 9 connected at a spacing

and parallelly by transverse support elements 8 at the ends, wherein the hydraulic cylinders 5 are arranged at the transverse support elements 8.
In addition, the wide side 7 of the outer frame 1 are connected together, by bridge elements 11 arranged transversely thereto, to form an outer frame 1 closed in itself In that case the devices 6 for adjusting the chill mould narrow side walls 4 are accommodated in the bridge elements 11 and, in particular, so that they are disposed in a line with the narrow side walls 4.
By virtue of the construction of the outer frame 1 in accordance with the invention, which frame closes the chill mould 10 at all sides, all forces, i.e. thermally caused forces or adjusting forces, which arise within the chill mould remain within the closed force system of the outer frame 1; they do not cause any reaction forces to the outside, n that case the outer frame 1 is so designed that the wide side walls 2, 3, which carry the copper plates 12, 13, are centrally centred, which has the consequence that in the case of thermal expansion of the wide side walls 2, 3 and of the copper plates 12, 13 all the said elements expand symmetrically relative to the outer frame, wherein the forces which have to be transmitted from the wide side walls 2, 3 or the narrow side walls 4 of the chill mould 10 to the outer frame 1 are reduced to a minimum.
Beyond that the design of the outer frame 1 in accordance with the invention and its wide sides 7 in the form of a rectangular frame selectively permit with great advantage an electromagnetic brake or an electromagnetic agitator to be installed and this in that case can be moved in from the outside through the frame 1 between the wide side walls 2, 3.
In that case it is possible to accommodate the devices for adjusting the narrow side walls at the bridge elements 11 of the outer frame 1 and, in particular, so that these are disposed in a line with the narrow side walls 4 in order to minimise the play arising in the system.
