Title of Invention

"A TOOTHED METALLIC PLATE FOR COVERING PART OF THE INCLINED SURFACE OF A CHUTE"

Abstract A toothed metallic plate for covering part of the inclined surface of a chute, characterised in that the toothed metallic plate comprises base plate 1 and a plurality of teeth 2 of varying body profile and end configuration, and being substantially equally spaced on the surface of the base plate, the said base plate and teeth being produced by a single casting, and the base plate being provided with a number of holes for bolting the same to the said inclined surface of a chute.
Full Text The present invention relates to a toothed metallic plate for covering part of the inclined surface of a chute.
For feeding coke in blast furnaces the coke lumps of size +80mm are usually crushed into lumps of smaller sizes between +25mm and -80mm using a toothed double-roll crusher before feeding the same into a blast furnace. If the proportion of lumps of size 460mm is high in the coke supplied to the crusher, the consumption of electrical energy in the crusher increases and the working life of the crusher decreases owing to rapid wear and tear of the same.
In the existing art, prior breakage of the lumps of size +80mm in the coke fed into the crusher is done to some extent by allowing the lumps to fall from a conveyor onto the inclined surface of a chute, which is sometimes lined with basalt and/or provided with an additional plate of steel during transfer of the coke from the conveyor to the crusher in a steel plant.
The object of the present invention is to provide a toothed metallic plate to cover the part of the inclined surface of a chute for increasing the breakage rate of the coke lumps falling thereon from a conveyor and thereby reducing the electrical energy consumption in the crusher as well as extending the service life of the crusher used for further breakage of the lumps to be of size +25mm and -80mm with generation of reduced coke fines.
The invented toothed metallic plate comprises a base plate of a metal like a high-manganese-content steel of
preferably IS:276, Grade-1 on which a number of inclined teeth each having either a pointed or a chiselled end are provided, which are substantially equally spaced on one of the two flat surfaces of said base plate, the teeth and the base plate being made by a single casting- The base plate is bolted, on the inclined surface of a chute on which coke lumps are allowed to drop from a conveyor from a height of at least one metre and at an angle of 30 - 60° with respect to the toothed surface of the base plate.
The invention is described fully and particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings in an unrestricted manner, in which
Figure 1 is the plan view of a typical base plate;
Figure 2 is the sketch of a typical tooth having a pointed end;
Figure 3 is the sketch of a typical tooth having a chiselled end.
Referring to Fig. 1, the base plate 1 is of preferred dimensions 300 x 300 x 20mm on which a preferred number of twentyfive teeth 2, each having either a pointed or chiselled end, are equally spaced in five rows R1, R2, R3, RA, R5 and five columns C1, C2, C3, CA, C5, of five teeth each, leaving a gap 3 of 10mm between each pair of adjacent rows/columns- Four holes H1, H2, H3, H4 are made in the base plate 1, spaced uniformly on the toothed surface thereof, for bolting the same with the inclined surface of a chute*
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, each pin 2 is positioned on flat surface A of the base plate 1 during casting of the same. The tooth shown in Fig, 2 has a pointed end 5 and that shown in Fig. 3 has a chiselled end 6 of preferred width of 20mm. The teeth of different profiles and chiselled end widths are provided on the base plate, depending on the type of coke lumps to be broken.
Typical base dimensions of each tooth are 50 x 50mm. Typical height of each tooth above the flat surface 4 of the base plate is 50/70mm.
Field trials have been conducted on the invented toothed metallic plate in a steel plant. The percentage of coke lumps of size +100mm and +80mm found to be broken during their fall from a conveyor onto the inclined surface of a chute with and without the invented toothed metallic plate bolted thereon, as found during the trials,is presented in Table-1 and Tablell respectively.
The results show that the percentages of coke lumps broken increases by 6.7 for lumps of sisie +100mra and by 8.1 for lumps of size +80mm by bolting the invented toothed metallic plate on the inclined surface of a chute.
The invented toothed metallic plate is easy to produce and fit onto the inclined surface of a chute, workable without the need for any maintenance at all over a long period and found to be useful for crushing the coke lumps in a crusher with improved size consistency of the crushed lumps, reduced generation of coke fines, and saving in the electrical power consumption and extended service life of the crusher.
