Full Text FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to alternate current/direct current compressor. PRIOR ART
Compressors generally used for refrigeration devices and like run on main power supply. If the power supply is interrupted, compressors cease to function and cooling inside the refrigerator is not guaranteed any longer, In case of long power cuts, the food inside the refrigerator will get spoiled.
According to US Patent No. 4216385, an alternate current/direct current compressor is knowrn for operating a refrigerator compressor which switches over from alternate current operation mode to direct current operation mode deriving power from a direct current source, through an inverter circuit. A thermostat is provided which is connected to a circuit for supplying direct current voltage to the inverter circuit in the direct current operation mode.
US Patent No. 3974660 discloses a battery powered inverter power-supply for compressors for refrigeration units on recreational vehicles or the like. The compressor is adapted to operate in a DC mode wherein power is supplied to the inverter and refrigeration unit from a vehicle battery. The refrigeration unit is also adapted to operate from a source of normal household power. A cold control circuit is responsive to a thermostatic sensor within the refrigerated enclosure to apply battery power to the inverter power supply only when the supply is operating in the DC mode and cooling is required. A battery charger is operable during the AC mode to automatically recharge the vehicle battery.
US Patent No. 4015182 discloses electronically commutated DC compressor for circulating a suitable coolant through a condenser then through an evaporator disposed within a chamber or compartment to be cooled. The compressor is used in portable refrigerating apparatus in recreational vehicles, refrigeration apparatus for trucks or other transport vehicles and for air conditioning system for automobiles and recreational vehicles. In such applications, a power source such as
battery, alternator or a generator serves to energise the motor of the compressor.

In such cases the compressor will switch over automatically from alternate current supph to direct current supply.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide alternate current/direct current compressor which incorporates an electronic PCB
(printed circuit board) which transforms batten' direct current voltage into alternate current suitable for household compressors.
Further object of the present invention is to provide alternate current/ direct current compressor which incorporates an elecronic PCB which enables automatic switch over from direct current to alternate current supply when regular alternate current cupply becomes available

Fig. 2 : shows the inverter block diagram;
DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION W.R.T. DRAWINGS
According to this invention there is provided an AC/DC compressor which runs on regular household AC supply as well as on DC power supply from battery. The running of refrigerator is therefore not interrupted and cooling of food products stored inside the refrigerator is ensured even during power cuts. In case of regular power supply, the compressor of the refrigerator runs under regular AC supply and the inverter battery is fully charged. In case of power cut-off, the inverter module transforms DC supply to AC supply and step-up the AC supply to the desired range of 220V-240V.
Referring to fig. (1) and fig. (2), AC/DC compressor is provided with an inverter module which is fitted on the back side of the refrigerator at a bottom plate. The compressor is basically CSIR (capacitor, start, inductor, run) type reciprocating compressor. A 4uF capacitor is used for running CSIR compressor. The main function of the inverter module is to convert the 12V, DC power from battery to 230V, 50HZ, AC power to
drive the refrigerator in case of power failure. It contains high and low voltage cards inside together with serviceable fuse lying inside battery terminer cover. Basically it is micro-controller based which has been
XI
specially designed for the refrigerator application.!The inverter module has charger module (11) which is connected at one end to AC mains and at the other end to 12V, DC battery (12) so that when AC supply is on, the said charger module keeps on charging the said battery (12) all it is fully charged. The MOSFET circuit (13) is used for switching. It converts 12V, DC supply from battery into 12V, 50HZ, AC supply. The step-up transformer (14) steps up the 12V, 50HZ AC supply to 240V, 50HZ supply. The said battery charger module has input battery charger using 15uF capacitor for limiting the current. 4 pin connector is provided in the front of module for interfacing with the mains power input and output the thermostat and bulb inside the refrigerator. S'Led connections are provided to indicate the present status of the inverter module, also for trouble-shooting and debugging for service person. A three-pin plug power cord harness fitted on the backside of the refrigerator to interface
inverter module with the refrigerator. It also interfaces with bulb, thermostat and compressor.
An overload protector (OLP) is connected in series with PTC (positive temperature co-efficient) relay used in the refrigerator OLP protects the compressor from sudden high voltage, current or temperature. OLP and PTC are together fitted with the compressor PTC also acts as current limiter to compressor in case of lock rotor condition.
It is to be understood that the system of present invention is susceptible to modifications, changes and adaptations by those skilled in the art.
'v,
Such modifications, changes and adaptations are intended to be within the scope of the present invention, which is further set forth under the following claims:
