3. PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION
The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed : -

The invention relates to a roll changer equipped with personnel protection equipment for a printing press.
Roll changers are known from the state of technology and are e.g. described in detail in the EP 0 436 825 or EP 1 223 134. The roll changer has multi-arm winding roll carrier to ensure continuous processing of paper rolls. When a paper roll on one arm of the winding roll carrier is consumed/then the winding roll carrier swings the paper roll located on the other arm, so that it can be used for production process after a certain transition stage, in which the continuous paper of the new paper roll is stuck to nearly consumed paper roll.
In place of the used-up paper roll a new paper roll is moved on a sliding platform also known from the state of technology on to the roll stand and thus on to the winding roll carrier. The area between the moving sliding platform and the roll stand is called loading side in the following.
Persons, who are in the area of this loading side, are endangered in case of wide rolls by the fact that the bobbins of used-up or nearly used-up paper rolls burst on reaching the natural frequency speed. In the following the diameter is described as critical diameter, which a used-up or nearly used-up paper roll has. In case of high rotation speed, which a paper roll and thus also this residual bobbin can reach, the breakage of a bobbin occurs like an explosion, during which several small and large sleeve parts get hurled through the air.
In the state of technology, therefore, photoelectric barriers are provided, which are arranged in the area of the loading side. Further, in the state of technology roll doors are provided for personnel protection and are pulled down for the protection purpose on the loading side. These roll doors must be controlled either electronically, so that these are operated only in the event that a paper roll reaches a critical diameter, or the roll doors are permanently closed, so that these need to be
-2-

removed every time when technicians have to work in the area of the loading side.
Starting from the said state of technology the invention has as basis the task of providing a roll changer for a printing press with protection equipment, which protects most reliably and in cost effective manner personnel working in the area of the loading side only during the critical printing processes, i.e. time when these are hazardous for the personnel.
This task is resolved through the independent claim 1 of the present invention. The further dependent claims are advantageous designs of the invention.
According to the basic thought of the present invention a roll changer for a printing press is provided with a roll stand, wherein the roll stand receives the paper roll yet to be processed on its winding roll carrier. Before the roll stand feeding of new paper rolls is provided by means of a sliding platform arranged on the floor. Between the sliding platform and holding equipment, which is also located on the loading side on the side opposite to the roll changer, protection equipment is provided. The protection equipment is variable in its area of expansion.
The protection equipment, e.g. a guard net, is suspended at least two points. One point is at the sliding platform, which moves towards the roll stand, when a new paper roll gets transported to the roll stand, and the other point is a fix point, namely at the holding equipment, opposite the roll stand on the loading side, from where the sliding platform moves away while moving a new roll. If the protection equipment is e.g. a guard net, then this guard net is fitted on a vertical pole in such a way that the guard net forms a maximum possible smooth surface, while the sliding platform moves towards the roll stand.
Since the sliding platform with the new paper roll moves towards the roll stand always when a paper roll on the roll stand approaches its end, the protection fixture
-3-

starts clamping, like e.g. the guard net, always, when the paper roll assumes a critical diameter, i.e. it is in a condition prone to breakage. At other times the sliding platform is in a position in the holding equipment, i.e. away from the roll stand and thus the protection equipment is not built up in front of the roll changer.
As a result, it means that persons are reliably protected against broken pieces of exploding bobbins, and that too always when this is essential due to the diameter of the residual paper roll. At every other point of time the area on the loading side of the roll changer can be accessed unobstructed, which eases the working at the printing press. For the protection equipment no additional electronics or actuatorics becomes necessary, whereby the reliability of the system is increased due to low number of components.
According to an advantageous design of the invention the protection equipment is provided on both the sides of the sliding platform. That means, the sides, parallel to the movement direction of the sliding platform, are secured, when the sliding platform moves in the direction of the roll stand. According to the invention it is desirable that both sides on the loading side of the roll changer are shielded, to that extent also both sides are easily accessible for persons. If this is not the case, then the protection equipment is also not needed on both the sides.
According to another advantageous design of the invention the protection equipment, like e.g. the above mentioned guard net, is designed in such a way that on the one hand broken pieces of bursting paper roll bobbin are captured by the protection equipment, and on the other hand a clearly appreciable blockage for the area on the loading sides of the roll changer is offered to the persons working in the area of the printing press. It means, on the one hand the protection equipment must have continuous plane or must have very close mesh, to protect even against flying smallest parts, and on the other hand for example typical warning colors and fix materials should be used, in order give a clear warning signal to the technical staff in
-4-

the area of the loading side of the roll changer and not to enable the technical staff, to remove the blockage in the short term. For the support of the character of a fix blockage there can be a further provision, that the technical staff cannot remove the protection equipment by hand or at least a well appreciable warning light and/or a well appreciable warning siren is used, when the technical staff removes the protection equipment.
According to another design of the invention an anti-jamming arrangement is provided on the protection equipment, to prevent that persons do not get stuck between the protection equipment and the roll stand. Further the anti-jamming arrangement should also serve the purpose that nobody gets stuck between the protection equipment and the holding equipment. The anti-jamming arrangement can be e.g. in the form of a spring actuated bracket, which is fitted at the guard net and is moved from the sliding platform in the direction of the roll stand. The spring actuated bracket can be a part of a frame, to which the guard net is fixed, which is used as protection equipment. For this purpose, the frame is also fitted at its end pieces on the sliding platform.
A further component of the frame can be a rolling rail, which is arranged between the holding equipment and the roll stand. As holding equipment herein, e.g. a partition wall can serve the purpose. The rolling rail can be fixed in this case to the roll stand and holding equipment. In this design a care should be taken that the rolling rail is located at highest possible level, so that the technical staff can pass through under the rail while protection equipment being away.
The present invention is explained below on the basis of design examples by means of enclosed drawing. It shows:

form of the invention;

Figure 4:Another design form of the invention based protection equipment;
Figure 5a:Plane view on the roll changer with close roll door;
Figure 5b:Plane view on the roll changer with open roll door.
Figure 1 a shows a roll changer 1 in a first position, i.e. in a position, in which the sliding platform 2 is directly at the roll stand 10. In this condition, according to this first design form of the invention, the guard net 3 is mounted before the roll stand on the loading side. The guard net 3 is for this purpose fixed to the partition wall 5, which serves as invention based holding equipment, and to the sliding platform 2. The movement of the guard net is guided by the rolling rail 4, which is located permanently between the partition wall 5 and the roll stand 10. In this first position of the sliding platform there is a residual roll 6 with critical diameter in the roll stand 10.
Figure 1 b shows a second position of the invention based roll changer 1. In this position, the sliding platform 2 is at the partition wall 5, so that the guard net 3 is gathered together like a curtain and the loading side 12 is easily accessible.
Figure 2a shows a plane view on the roll changer of the first design form in its first position. In the plane view it can be recognized that the guard net 3 is stentered on both sides of the roll stand 10 as well as in the area above the sliding platform 2, i.e. between
-6-

the rolling rails 4. This means, a frame 14 made up of two rolling rails 4 and three spring supported brackets 8 is so arranged between roll stand 10 and the partition wall 5 that a secured space 7 emerges.
Figure 2b shows the roll changer in a plane view at a point of time, when the sliding platform is at the partition wall 5. Precisely in this second position, i.e. when the loading side is not protected through the guard net, it can be meaningful, to point out the dangerous situation to the persons in the potentially endangered area despite of it and to provide area securing by means of photoelectric barriers 9. Based on the signal, which is outputted by the photoelectric barrier, a visible or audible signal can be given to the person in the area of the roll changer.
Figure 3a shows another invention based design form of the invention. In Figure 3a merely the invention based sliding platform 2 with grill elements 15 on it in the first position is shown, i.e. the position with closed protection equipment. Instead of guard net, in this design form a grill is used. To ensure that the grill remains variable in the space-wise expansion, it is built up of several grill elements. These grill elements are fitted next to each other as being latterly shift able, so that the first grill element fitted at the sliding platform pulls behind it other grill elements. To ensure that the last grill element remains at its place, instead of partition wall 5 from the first design form a floor anchoring 11 as holding equipment can be selected. Figure 3b shows the second design form of the invention in the second position, i.e. the position, in which the loading side is not secured by the protection equipment. To be able to provide a suitable anti-jamming protection for the protection equipment as per this design form, e.g. a jamming spring 13 can be used, like it is shown in Figure 3c. The first grill element 15, which is fitted to the sliding platform, is fitted merely in the jamming spring, which merges in a rail. If a force F acts, like it is represented in Figure 3a, against the first grill element, then an anchorage of the first grill element jumps from the round fitting part of the
-7-

spring in Figure 3c in a rail fitted at the sliding platform 2. Should a person be between roll stand and sliding platform then he/she does not get stuck by the grill element 15. Figure 4 shows a third design form of the invention, in which like in the second design form of the invention the protection equipment consists of grill elements 15, however the grill elements 15 cannot be shifted parallel to each other, but clap together and move apart from each other like the accordion. Further this design form can be implemented also through a folding bellow made of flexible material, which can be varied similar like an accordion in the space expansion. Also in this design form anti-jamming protection 13, like as shown in Figure 3c, is planned.
A fourth design form of the invention is shown in Figures 5a and 5b. Figures 5a and 5b show plane views of two operating statuses of the roll changer, like these have been shown also in Figures 2a and 2b. This design form differentiates itself from the rest of the design forms in way that a roll door 16 is used as protection equipment. Advantageously the roll door 16 is planned on each side of the sliding platform. In folded condition, i.e. when the loading side is easily accessible, the parts of the roll door 16 are pushed together, as shown in Fig. 5b. However, more space saving technical solutions, known from the state of technology, are theoretically possible, for example, the rolling of the roll door 16.
