This invention relates to a multi point fuel mixing combustion chamber specifically but without implying any limitation thereto, for diesel engines used in tractors, generating sets and stationary applications.
PRIOR ART
In diesel engine, the combustion takes place when the fuel is injected into a volume of air compressed to a very high temperature and pressure. To obtain better combustion, it is necessary to have a homogeneous mixture of air and fuel. However in diesel engines, it is difficult to get a perfectly homogenous mixture, as a result of which the air fuel ratio is not uniform inside the combustion chamber. The mixture is leaner at some points & richer at other points. Therefore, for proper burning of fuel, excess air is supplied resulting in actual air to fuel ratio being higher than stoichiometric air fuel ratio (chemically correct air fuel ratio).
Currently pistons (2,4,9) with various type of combustion chambers are being used in the diesel engines. One type of conventional combustion chamber known in the art is bathtub type (1). Its shape is similar to that of bathtub. The mixing of fuel & air takes place by the swirl movement of air inside the combustion chamber. The incoming air is directed tangentially into the cylinder, which swirls around the walls of the combustion chamber and mixes with the high-pressure atomized fuel spray from the nozzle.
A bath tub type combustion chamber has the drawback that there is inefficient mixing of fuel and air which leads to poor fuel efficiency, higher smoke levels, higher exhaust emissions causing air pollution and excessive soot formations leading to higher rate of wear resulting in reduced life of engine components.
Another type of combustion chamber (3) has raised bottom (5) at the center, a cross-section of which is more or less a toroidal in shape, which tends to encourage the generation of annular vortex, white centralizing the axis of swirl within the chamber.
The toroidal combustion chamber is also inefficient in mixing of fuel and air which leads to poor fuel efficiency, higher smoke levels, higher exhaust emissions causing environmental pollution and excessive soot formations leading to higher rate of wear resulting in reduced life of engine components.
Still another type of combustion chamber known in the art, which is being recently used in modern diesel engines, is called re-entrant type combustion chamber (6), which has raised bottom (7) at the center. The outer walls of the chamber, form an angle (8) with the vertical. This re-entrant type of combustion chamber has shown certain improvements in mixing of fuel and air.
However the above type of combustion chamber has also the limitations in achieving a proper homogenous fuel-air mixture. Therefore the above type of combustion chamber is also found to be deficient in achieving the desired performance levels in terms of fuel efficiencies, smoke levels, exhaust emissions and soot formations.
OBJECTS OF PRESENT INVENTION
An object of the present invention is to provide a multi point fuel mixing combustion chamber, which enables homogenous mixing of fuel and air thereby improving the fuel efficiency of the engine.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a multi point fuel mixing
combustion chamber, which by improving the mixing of air and fuel, reduces the smoke
level of the engine.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a multi point fuel mixing combustion chamber, which lowers the exhaust emissions thereby helping to control environmental pollution.
Further object of the present invention is to provide a multi point fuel mixing combustion chamber which reduces soot formation thereby enhancing the life of engine component.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided a multi-point fuel mixing combustion chamber for diesel engines characterized in that the combustion chamber is provided with a raised bottom at the center, outer walls forming angle with the vertical, and multiple pockets on the periphery of the chamber.

DESCRITPION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS-
Referring to fig. 4 and fig. 4a, the geometry of multi-point fuel mixing combustion chamber of the present invention housed in piston (14) has been designed, keeping in mind the generation of extra turbulence of air required for improved mixing of air and fuel. The combustion chamber of the present invention has raised bottom (11) at the center and outer walls of the combustion chamber form an angle (12) with the vertical. Extra pockets like pocket (13) fig. 4 and other pockets (16 to 18) fig. 5 have been provided in the periphery of the combustion chamber. The eddies formed in these pockets, create extra turbulence which enables improved mixing of air and fuel thereby providing relatively better homogenous fuel and air mixture. This in turn results in improved fuel efficiency, reduced smoke level, reduced exhaust emissions and improved engine life due to reduced soot formation.
it is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications, adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant embodiments employing the concepts and features of this invention are intended to be within the scope of the present invention, which is further set forth under the following claims:-
