Title of Invention

A COLOUR INDICATOR FOR DETERMINING THE PERCENTAGE OF CHLORINE PRESENT IN BELACHING POWDER AND A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION THERE OF

Abstract The method of the present invention consists in dipping a strip of paper to the test solution and reading the color developed. The method consists of a small booklet containing a plurality of strips. At the front of the booklet (cover page) a color code is provided. Five color shades viz dark brown, brick red, orange, yellow and white are provided adjacent to each other having corresponding indicator markings as 5%, 4%, 3%, 2% and 1% bleaching powder concentration for 33% standard chlorine availability. Each strip of paper in the booklet is specially prepared coating sensitive chemicals to react and develop different colors when treated with bleaching powder solution depending upon the percentage of chlorine available. The table in the handbill gives information regarding actual percentage of the test solution and the color, percentage of chlorine available in the test solution and quantity of additional bleaching powder to be added to correct the bleaching powder solution to get 33% chlorine in the test solution (based the color developed based on the chlorine percentage of the test sample).

FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a process of determining the chlorine percentage in bleaching powder by dip and read method.
PRIOR ART
The quality of bleaching powder in terms of percentage of available chlorine varies with the percentage of chlorine stabilized in the bleaching powder and quality of packing. In the field condition, at farmers level, exposure of bleaching powder to air, packing, repacking etc. lead decrease in % of chlorine availability. The standard method followed to test the quality of bleaching powder is estimation of chlorine by titration. For this purpose, the bleaching powder sample is to be sent to testing laboratories with standard packing. The samples are usually sent to public or private laboratories that could estimate the % chlorine available in the bleaching powder by titration method. The cost for estimation of one sample varies form Rs. 150 to 200. The sample ought not be exposed to atmosphere for a longer time than necessary and sampling be done as rapidly and as thoroughly as possible. Sample should be placed in a cool and dry place. The instrument ought to be clean and dry when used. To draw a representative sample, the contents of each container selected for sampling is mixed as thoroughly as possible by roling, shaking or stirring by suitable means. The sample is placed in a clean, dry and airtight glass or other suitable container on which the material has no action.

Several disadvantages are associated with the known methods, and certain of which are listed hereinebelow :
1. Only qualified, trained technicians/analyst can effect the evaluation of quality of bleaching powder.
2. The evaluation/testing of bleaching powder is done only in the established standard laboratories where such facilities are available.
3. The titration method involves a substantial time and involves technicality and calculations.
4. The cost involved in titration method of testing/evaluation of bleaching powder is very high.
5. The titration method helps in estimation of chlorine % in bleaching powder and will not help to correct the available bleaching powder for required % of chlorine,
6. The bleaching powder sample preparation for titration method is laborious involves grinding, washing and involve handling of chemicals/reagents.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An object of this invention is to propose a method for determination of percentage of chlorine in bleaching powder by dip and read method.
Another object of this invention is to propose a method for determination of percentage of chlorine in bleaching powder by dip and read method and to correct the bleaching powder solution for required concentration of chlorine.

Still another object of this invention is to propose a method for determination of percentage of chlorine in bleaching powder by dip and read method and comprising simple dip and read paper indicating the strength of chlorine in bleaching powder solution by different color based on the strength of chlorine.
Yet another object of this invention is to propose a method for determination of percentage of chlorine in bleaching powder by dip and read method, which is a cheap, fast and effective method.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided a colour indicator for determining the percentage of chlorine present in bleaching powder comprising :
a) a plurality of strips of paper to form a booklet,
b) a colour code provided on said booklet,
c) each said strip impregnated separately with a first solution of sodium and second and third solutions of thiosulphate starch and potassium iodide.
Further according to this invention there is provided a process for the preparation of a colour indicator for determining the percentage of chlorine present in bleaching powder comprising in impregnating a filler paper in a first solution of sodium thiophosphate followed by impregnation in a second solution of starch solution and finally in a third solution of potassium iodide, removing excess solution after each step of impregnation, forming said strips into a booklet.

Cost benefit ratio
The cost involved to develop 1cm x 6.5 cm strips of is Rs.l (including chemicals and paper). Each strip can used to test 2-3 samples of bleaching powder solution. The benefit realized due to the test is ensured disinfection leading to reduction in contamination effective disease management and maintenance of hygiene.
Table : Chlorine percentage and corresponding corrections for attaining 5%

In accordance with this invention the following steps are employed :
1. Sodium thiosulphate of 1.5 to 3% solution is prepared in distilled water
2. Starch solution of 0.3 to 0.6% is prepared in distilled water.
3. Potassium iodide solution of 8.0 to 12.0% is prepared with distilled water.
4. Watmann filter paper of 46cm x 57 cm dimension.

EXAMPLE
Take 2 liter of solutions 1 to 3 in separate trays of 46 cm x 28 cm x 5 cm dimension. Cut the watmann filter paper in to half size (45 cm x 27.5 cm). Dip the paper in the first solution for 8-15 seconds and remove the excess of solution by holding up right and reverse the order. When excess solution removed, dip the paper in solution 2 for 5-10 seconds remove the excess solution as earlier. Then dip the paper in solution 3 for 2-3 seconds. Dry the sheet on a plastic sheet in room temperature. After thorough dry in room temperature store the sheets in airtight plastic covers. Prepare the booklets in 1cm x 6.5 cm by cutting (using Printing press cutter) and prepare small booklets with cover page having the color code. Test the papers for standard bleaching powder (with 33% chlorine content).
PREPARATION OF COLOR CODE INDEX
Prepare 1 to 5% solution of bleaching powder with 33% chlorine (obtained from pure chemicals for titration purposes). Dip the test paper and observe the color developed. Then record the corresponding number of standard American color code. Get these colors printed in the color matching digital photo printing studio. These prints are used in the press to prepare the cover page of the booklet for standard color code as in the photo provided.
STORAGE AND SHELF LIFE:
The booklets and the handbill explaining the product and its method of use should be packed in the airtight plastic covers of superior quality. The shelf life of the paper in this method of packing is for 8 months.
