Title of Invention

"A DEVICE FOR USE IN HORIZONTAL FORM FILL AND SEAL MACHINE TO PREVENT AIR PUFFING IN POUCHES"

Abstract This invention relates to a device for use in horizontal form fill and seal machine to prevent air puffing in pouches characterized by a vacuum chamber; a suction unit connected to one side of said vacuum chamber, wherein suction unit is provided with a regulator (not shown) to regulate the amount of suction to be applied; a tube of a small, diameter connected at one end to the other side of the said vacuum chamber and disposed within the cylindrical shaped wrapping tube formed of wrapping film by the forming device and the said tube being placed over the product line and wherein the other end of the said tube extends close to the cross-sealing station.
Full Text FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a device for use in horizontal form fill and seal machine to prevent air puffing in pouches.
PRIOR ART
In a horizontal form fill and seal machine, the product (1) to be packed in a pouch is pushed by lugs (2) of infeed conveyers. The wrapping film (11) is drawn form a rotating spool of film (3) rotating around a shaft (10). The film is guided by pair of rollers (9,9) over the forming device (4) by means of pull rollers (5). The wrapping film at this stage is shaped into the form of a tube into which the product (1) to be packed, is pushed through. The product with wrapper tube thus formed, travels forward by means of propulsion provided by pull rollers (5) and sealing rollers (6,12). The said tube then passes through the cross-sealing area where the cross-seal is made by rotating sealing jaws (7,8).
A limitation of the above known system is that in the cross-sealing region, when the cross-sealers (7,8) rotate to form the seal, air is entrapped in the tube, in the space between two consecutive products and there is no means through which the entrapped air could escape. During cross-sealing operation, the space of the tube gets decreased and air gets compressed inside the pouch. This puffs up the pouch and there is every chance of seal bursting while handling such a puffed packet.
OBJECTS OF PRESENT INVENTION
An object of the present invention is to provide a device for extraction of entrapped air to prevent air puffing in the pouches on horizontal form fill and seal machine.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided a device (4) for use in horizontal form fill and seal machine to prevent air puffing in pouches characterized by:
(a) a vacuum chamber (14);
(b) a suction unit (13) connected to one side of said vacuum chamber (14), wherein suction unit is provided with a regulator (not shown) to regulate the amount of suction to be applied;
(c) A tube (15) of a small diameter connected at one end to the other
side of the said vacuum chamber (14) and disposed within the
cylindrical shaped wrapping tube(15) formed of wrapping film by
the forming device (4) and the said tube (15) being placed over the
product (1) line and wherein the other end of the said tube (15)
extends close to the cross-sealing station.
DESCRIPTION OF FIGURES
The present invention will now be illustrated with accompanying drawings which are illustrative embodiment of the invention and are not

intended to be taken restrictively to imply any limitation on the scope of the present invention. In the accompanying figures:-
Fig.l: shows the horizontal form fill and seal machine as known in the art;
Fig.2: shows the air-puffing in pouches sealed with known horizontal form fill and seal machine;
Fig.3: shows the device installed on horizontal form fill and seal machine to prevent air puffing in the pouches;
DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
Referring to fig.2, the device of the present invention has a vacuum chamber (14). One end of the said vacuum chamber is connected a suction unit (13) having a regulator to regulate the amount of suction to be applied to suck the air. A slim tube (15) of small diameter and made of stainless steel or any suitable material is connected to the other end of the said vacuum chamber (14). The other end of the said slim tube (15) reaches close to the cross-sealing region. The said slim tube (15) is placed inside the cylindrical wrapper tube but above the product line. The said slim tube has preferably perforations. Suction applied to the slim tube (15) by the suction unit (13), constantly keeps sucking air out of the wrapper tube so that at the time of cross-sealing, air inside the wrapper tube is at a much lower pressure to cause any air puffing (a) in the packaged pouch containing the product.

It is to be noted that present invention is susceptible to modifications changes and adaptations by those skilled in the art. Such, variant embodiments incorporating the concepts and features of the present invention, are intended to be within the scope of the present invention, which is further set forth under the following claims:

I CLAIM;
1. A device (4) for use in horizontal form fill and seal machine to
prevent air puffing in pouches characterized by:
(a) a vacuum chamber (14);
(b) a suction unit (13) connected to one side of said vacuum chamber (14), wherein suction unit is provided with a regulator (not shown) to regulate the amount of suction to be applied;
(c) A tube (15) of a small diameter connected at one end to the other
side of the said vacuum chamber (14) and disposed within the
cylindrical shaped wrapping tube (15) formed of wrapping film by
the forming device (4) and the said tube (15) being placed over the
product (1) line and wherein the other end of the said tube (15)
extends close to the cross-sealing station.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the said tube (15) has
perforations over its surface.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1 as substantially herein described
and illustrated with accompanying drawings.
