Title of Invention

"AN IMPROVED CARTON"

Abstract A carton (1) comprising a box (2) structure with openings at either ends along the longitudinal axis and closed by flaps, characterised by the upper wall (3) having a weak zone to define an openable (4) cover, an inlay or barrier member (8) adhered to the inner surface of said box (2) structure excluding the cover member (4) to prevent the ingress of moisture or aroma into said carton.
Full Text FILED OF INVENTION
This invention relates to an improved carton. By way of example, but without intending to imply and limitation thereto, the carton of the present invention can advantageously be employed for storage and dispensing of tea bags. BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
Cartons presently known in the art normally consist of an ordinary carton made of cardboard and having a flap or upper cover member, which may be opened or closed. A distinct disadvantage associated with such a known construction of a carton is that or ingress of air and moisture into the carton, and thereby detrimentally affecting the quality of tea within said bags. Yet another disadvantage is that of ingress of aroma, which results in imparting a tainted taste to tea. OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An object of this invention is to propose an improved construction of a carton.
Another object of this invention is to propose an improved construction of a carton, which can advantageously be employed for storage of tea bags.
Still another object of this invention is to propose an improved construction of a carton, which prevents the ingress of air and aroma into said carton.
Yet another object of this invention is to propose an improved construction of a carton, which is simple.
DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided an improved carton (1) comprising a box (2) structure with openings at either ends along the longitudinal axis and closed by flaps, characterised by the upper wall (3) having a weak zone to define an openable (4) cover, an inlay or barrier member (8) adhered to the inner surface of said box (2) structure excluding the cover member (4) to prevent the ingress of moisture or aroma into said carton.
The carton of the present invention may be used for various applications where ingress of air or aroma into the carton is to be provided. However, a particular application is that of a carton for storage of tea bags.
The carton comprises a normal box structure made of any known board material. The ends along the longitudinal axis is closed by flaps. Such features of a carton are known in the art and do not form a concept of the present invention.
Specifically, in accordance with the present invention, a tearable cover is provided on the upper wall of said box structure so as to provide access to the tea bags within said box or carton.
Further, an inlay or barrier member is adhered to the inner wall surface of the box, excluding the flap member.
In accordance with one embodiment, the inlay or barrier member comprises a laminate constituting a first member selected from metallized polyester, biaxially oriented polypropylene or nylon adhered to a second member being a coextruded member of paper and polyethylene.
The first member may have a thickness of 10—
15 microns. The second member comprising paper has a
2 thickness of 35 to-40 gms/m coextruded to polyethylene
having a thickness of 15-38 microns.
The first member is adhered to the inner surface of the box including the flap member.
DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO DRAWIN68
Further objects and advantage of this invention will be more apparent from the ensuing description where read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and wherein:
Fig. 1 shows a front view of the carton in a closed position;
Fig. 2 shows the carton in an open position.
Referring to the drawings, the carton 1 of the present invention comprises a box 2 with an upper wall 3. A tearable cover 4 having a tab 5 is provided with upper wall 3. For this purposes, perforations 6 are provided along three sides of cover 4 and a weak line* 7 and such that cover 4 can open along the sides containing perforations 6.
In accordance with this invention an inlay or barrier member 8 is adhered to the inner surface of box 2, except for cover 4.
Thus, the barrier member 8 prevents the ingress of air or aroma into carton 1. As barrier member 8 is not sealed to the inner surface of cover 4, ingress of air or aroma is prevented even when cover 4 is in an open status.

CLAIM:
1. An improved carton (1) comprising a box (2) structure with
openings at either ends along the longitudinal axis and closed by
flaps, characterized by the upper wall (3) having a weak zone to
define an openable (4) cover, an inlay or barrier member (8)
adhered to the inner surface of said box (2) structure excluding the
cover member (4) to prevent the ingress of moisture or aroma into
said carton.
2. An improved carton as claimed in claim 1 wherein the inlay or
barrier member (8) comprises a laminate constituting a first
member selected from metallized polyester, biaxially oriented
polypropylene or nylon adhered to a second member being a
coextruded member of paper and polyethylene.
3. An improved carton as claimed in claim 1 wherein the first member
may have a thickness of 10-15 microns.
4. An improved carton as claimed in claim 3 wherein the second
member comprising paper has a thickness of 35 to 40 gms/m2
coextruded to polyethylene having a thickness of 15-38 microns.
5. An improved carton substantially as herein described and
illustrated.
