Full Text | This invention relates to an improved carding machine with means to sense driving medium failure. Conventional carding machines utilized for processing man-made or natural fibres into sliver consist of carding cylinder, licker -in, flats, stripper roller, feed roller and the like. Carding cylinder of a carding machine is either belt driven wherein a belt connects the cylinder to the main drive or is directly driven without a belt through slip coupling. The main driving element drives sub systems such as licker-in, flats, stripper roller and the like of the carding machine. Optionally second drive means are provided for driving the licker-in. The fibre to be processed is fed to the carding cylinder through the licker-in with the help of a feed roller which is preferably driven by a separate drive means. Carding elements in and around the carding cylinder process the fibre fed through the feed rollers. This establishes a precondition that the feed roller must be stopped immediately in case of inoperation of either the cylinder or the licker-in. Failure of any drive means that drives the carding cylinder or licker-in must therefore be sensed immediately and supply of fibre from the feed roller to the respective unit must be stopped thereafter. Carding cylinder or licker-in may become inoperative due to cut or slippage from its guided path. Continuing supply of fibre to these units during cylinder or licker-in connected thereto is in motion. During failure of the drive due to any reasons, the inactivation of the cylinder or licker-in the prime mover experiences drastic variation in its load. Sensing this variation a control unit sends out positive signals to stop the machine. Alternately slowing down and/or stoppage of the cylinder rotation and licker-in movement may be sensed and the signals transmitted to the control unit for processing and actuating a stopping mechanism to stop the feed roller and so the carding machine. Presence of the driving medium itself may be sensed at any predetermined point at its defined path. When the driving medium gets cut off or is slippea out of its guided path, the sensing means detects its absence, sending appropriate signals to the control unit for processing and actuating the stopping mechanism. Accordingly, the present invention provides an improved carding machine with means to sense driving medium failure comprising a drivable carding cylinder unit and licker-in unit and, a feed roller provided with a secondary drive, wherein sensing means are provided to sense (a) the load variation of a prime mover driving the carding cylinder and licker-in, (b) the speed variation of the carding cylinder and licker-in and / or (c) the absence of the driving medium in its guide path, a control unit for processing the signals received from said sensing means, and actuating the stoppage of carding machine. The embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the figures in the accompanying drawings. Fig. I shows the drawing arrangement of a carding cylinder and licker-in. The main drive represented by numeral (1) drives the carding cylinder (2) by means of driving medium (3). The drive medium passes through the guide roller (7), pulley (8), tension roller (9) and licker-in roller (4). The feed roller for feeding the carding unit with fibre to be processed is indicated by reference numeral (5) and is driven by a secondary drive (6). Cleaning drive (10) Flats drive (11) and intermediary drive for the Flat cleaning system (12) is taken from the cylinder. Sensing element (13) is positioned at any of the locations indicated in figure I. Control unit is represented by reference numeral (14). The control unit processes the signals received from the sensing means and actuates the stoppage of the main and secondary driving elements. Any known sensing means can be used in the present invention. In Fig. 2, the licker-in is driven by an additional WE CLAIM : 1.
