Abstract The butterfly valve (3), which is connected directly to the outlet opening (2) or the outlet nozzle of a liquid container (1), has a valve housing (4), which is injection-moulded in a single piece from plastic, and a handle (7), which is mounted rotatably in the top part (5) of the valve housing (4) and is intended for actuating a shaft (8), on which there is fastened a disc-shaped butterfly element (9) which is intended for opening and closing a cylindrical throughpassage opening (10) in the bottom part (6) of the valve housing (4) the through-passage opening (10) of the valve housing (4) forms a seat (11) with the geometry of a sphere for the butterfly element (9), which can be rotated about an axis (13-13) perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (12-12) of the through-passage opening (10), in the closure position (9a) of the same.
Full Text The invention relates to a butterfly valve for liquid containers and liquid-carrying lines, in particular as a removal fitting for connection to the outlet nozzle or the outlet opening of a transporting and storage container for liquids, having a valve housing in which a disc-shaped butterfly element, which can be actuated by means of a handle and is intended for opening and closing a cylindrical through-passage opening, is mounted such that it can be rotated about an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said through-passage opening (DE 198 15 082A1).
The object of the invention is to improve the functional reliability of the butterfly valve of the generic type.
This object is achieved according to the invention by a butterfly valve having the features as described herein.
Accordingly the present invention provides a butterfly valve for liquid containers and liquid-carrying lines, in particular as a removal fitting for connection to the outlet nozzle or the outlet opening of a transporting and storage container for liquids, having a valve housing in which a discshaped butterfly element, which can be actuated by means of a handle and is intended for opening and closing a cylindrical through-passage opening, is mounted such that it can be rotated about an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said through-passage opening, characterized in that the through-passage opening of the valve housing forms a seat having a spherical geometry for the butterfly element in the closure position of the same.

The geometry of a sphere for the seat for the butterfly element in the closure position of the same in the through-passage opening of the housing of the butterfly valve according to the invention allows a sealed closure of the butterfly valve over a certain pivoting region of the butterfly element for the precise closure position thereof in the direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the throughpassage opening of the valve housing, and thus ensures a high level of functional reliability of the butterfly valve. Furthermore, within the context of maintenance work, the butterfly valve can be cleaned well.

The butterfly valve according to the invention is explained hereinbelow with reference to figures, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates an end view of the butterfly valve,
Figure 2 illustrates a longitudinal section of the butterfly valve, and
Figure 3 illustrates a cross section of the butterfly valve in the closure position along line III-III from Figure 1.
Main components of the butterfly valve 3, which is connected directly to the outlet opening 2 of a liquid container 1 or to the outlet nozzle of the same (not illustrated), are a valve housing 4, which is injection-moulded in a single piece from plastic and has a top part 5 and a bottom part 6, and a handle 7, which is mounted rotatably in the top part 5 of the valve housing 4 and is intended for actuating a shaft 8, which is mounted rotatably in the top part 5 and the bottom part 6 of the valve housing 4 and on which there is fastened a disc-shaped butterfly element 9 which is intended for opening and closing a cylindrical through-passage opening 10 in the bottom part 6 of the valve housing 4.
The through-passage opening 10 of the valve housing 4 forms a seat 11 with the geometry of a sphere for the butterfly element 9, which can be rotated about an axis 13-13 perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 12-12 of the through-passage opening 10, in the closure position 9a of the same.
The geometry of a sphere for the seat 11 allows a closure region over a pivoting angle a in the order of magnitude of from 5 to 10°, said pivoting angle differing from the precise closure position 9a of the butterfly element 9 at right angles to the longitudinal axis 12-12 of the through-passage opening 10 of the valve housing 4 in both pivoting directions a, b of the butterfly element 9. In said closure region, the butterfly valve 3 performs an optimum closure function.

This has the advantage that if, on account of carelessness, the closure position of the butterfly valve has not been precisely adjusted, said butterfly valve nevertheless closes in a sealed manner.
The butterfly element 9, which is injection-moulded from plastic, has a circumferential groove 14 into which a sealing ring 15 made of plastic material is injected, this plastic material being harder than the plastic material of the valve housing 4.
Integrally formed on the handle 7 is a stop 16 which interacts with two mating stops 17, 18 on the top part 5 of the valve housing 4 in order to define the closure position 9a and the open position 9b of the butterfly element 9 of the butterfly valve 3.
The top part 5, which is tapered in the bottom section, of the valve housing 4, with the rotary bearing 19 of the handle 7, said bearing being sealed by an 0-ring 20, is supported on the bottom part 6 of the housing by webs 21. The shaft 8, which is fastened " on the handle 7 and is intended for pivoting the butterfly element 9 of the butterfly valve 3, is produced from a glass-fibre-reinforced plastic. These design measures contribute to increasing the fall resistance of the butterfly valve, which is important when a transporting and storage container for liquids is fitted with such a butterfly valve.
The outlet opening 22 of the butterfly valve 3 can be closed off by a screw cap 23 with an incorporated 0-ring 24.
Holes 25, 26 in the stop 16 of the handle 7 and in an extension 27 of the valve housing 4 serve for holding a lead seal as a tamperproof securing means when a liquid container is fitted with the butterfly valve.

WE CLAIM :
1. A butterfly valve for liquid containers and liquid-carrying lines, in particular as a removal fitting for connection to the outlet nozzle or the outlet opening of a transporting and storage container for liquids, having a valve housing in which a discshaped butterfly element, which can be actuated by means of a handle and is intended for opening and closing a cylindrical through-passage opening, is mounted such that it can be rotated about an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said through-passage opening, characterized in that the through-passage opening (10) of the valve housing (4) forms a seat (11) having a spherical geometry for the butterfly element (9) in the closure position (9a) of the same.
2. The butterfly valve as claimed in claim 1, wherein the seat (11) of the valve housing (4) comprises a closure region for the butterfly element (9).

3. The butterfly valve as claimed in claims 1 and 2, wherein the butterfly element (9), which is injection-moulded from plastic, has a circumferential groove (14) into which a sealing ring (15) made of plastic is injected.
4. The butterfly valve as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the valve housing (4) is injection-moulded in a single piece from plastic.
5. The butterfly valve as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the plastic material of the sealing ring (15) is harder than the plastic material of the valve housing (4).

6. The butterfly valve as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein a
reinforced top part (5) of the valve housing (4).
7. A butterfly valve for liquid containers and liquid-carrying lines, substantially
as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
