"AN IMPROVED PROCESS OF MAKING MAGNESIUM OXIDE FROM MAGNESITE ORE."

Abstract An improved process of making magnesium oxide from Magnesite ore by treating pulverised Magnesite ore with hydrochloric acid of concentration in the range of 2.4(N) to 8.0 (N) for a period of 3 hours to 24 hours, maintaining the pH of the solution at the end of the reaction in the range of 1.5 to 6.0 pH, aerating the slurry for a period in the range of 2 to 6 hours, filtering and collecting the filtrate, treating the filtrate with hydroxides at pH 10.50 to 12.50, filtering and collecting the precipitate formed, washing, drying and calcining the precipitate at a temperature in the range of 900° to 1150 °C followed by palletising and sintering at a temperature in the range of 1650°C to 2000°C for a period in the range of 2 to 4 hours to obtain magnesium oxide.
Full Text We Claim :
1. An improved process of making magnesium oxide from Magnesite ore which
comprises treating pulverised Magnesite ore with hydrochloric acid of
concentration in the range of 2.4(N) to 8.0 (N) in the ratio in the range of 3 to
12(w/v)for a period of 3 hours to 24 hours, maintaining the pH of the solution
at the end of the reaction in the range of 1.5 to 6.0 , aerating the slurry for a
period in the range of 2 to 6 hours, filtering and collecting the filtrate, treating
the filtrate with hydroxides such as herein described at pH 10.50 to 12.50,
filtering and collecting the precipitate formed, washing, drying and calcining
the precipitate at a temperature in the range of 900° to 1150 °C followed by
palletising and sintering at a temperature in the range of 1650°C to 2000°C
for a period in the range of 2 to 4 hours to obtain magnesium oxide.
2. An improved process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the pH of the solution is
maintained by boiling or adding water, addition of alkali.
3. An improved process as claimed in claims 1 & 2 wherein the hydroxides
used are NH4,OH, NaOH, KOH, calcined dolomite, calcined calcite.
4. An improved process for making magnesium oxide from Magnesite ore
substantially as herein described with reference to the examples.
