SHIROLI, KOLHAPUR - 416 122 (INDIA) PH.NO 0230 2468859 NATIONALITY: INDIAN The following specification particularly describes and ascertains the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be manufactured. ORIGINAL 1413/MUM/01 1 7 AUG 2007 Granted This invention relates to an Improved Horizontal Honing Machine 1. Background The conventional honing machines are complex in design, highly expensive and power consuming. These machines are not maintenance friendly and occupy more space. Honing is a relatively new industrial process. Originally it was developed for finishing or reconditioning of automobile components and also for improving the bore geometry and surface finish without disturbing the axis of the bore. The honing process consists of the following. The honing tool is mounted on the rotating spindle of the honing machine, which expands simultaneously while rotating. The components like Connecting rod, Bushes, Rocker Arms, Nozzle Body etc. reciprocates on the mandrel thus bore being finished. Special coolant oil is used in the honing process. The cost-effective honing machine is designed to cater precise requirements of honing application at reasonable capital investment. This honing machine is manufactured keeping in view fast, accurate and precision honing at a minimum cost for any variety of jobs. The machine offers modern features to ease operation. The design is compact, sturdy but reliable. The set-up time is less hence it is more efficient & productive. 2. Prior Art It has been already proposed in publication number US4397658 by SUNNEN PRODUCT CO's "Feed control means for honing and like machines", wherein the construction of honing head is in one piece casting, spindle driving motor is on top of the honing head, dial is mounted on the top of the chuck and pressure adjustment is with two knobs, where as our apparatus is improved by simplifying the construction as follows: 1. Construction of honing head is in two vertical plates connected to each other by pillars mounted on the base plate. 2. Spindle drive motor is mounted below the honing head. 3. Dial is eliminated for simplification of construction. 4. Pressure adjusting arrangement is done by only one knob instead of two. 5. Variable Frequency Drive is used to change the Spindle speed easily. The present apparatus mentioned in the above prior art where the construction of honing head is in one piece casting wherein present invention is improved by Constructing honing head in two vertical plates connected to each other by pillars mounted on base plate. The present apparatus mentioned in the above prior art where vibration of the spindle motor is transmitted to honing head spindle which may affect the accuracy, wherein present invention is improved by spindle motor mounted on the frame of the machine below the honing head which transmit the vibration towards ground which will not affect the accuracy. The present apparatus mentioned in the above prior art where dial is mounted on the top of the chuck wherein present invention is improved by eliminating the dial for simplification of construction. The present apparatus mentioned in the above prior art where the pressure adjustment is done by two knobs wherein present invention is improved by Pressure adjustment which is done by only one Pressure knob instead of two. The present apparatus mentioned in the above prior art where the spindle speed change is done by various pulleys and belt which is very labourious, wherein present invention is improved by using Variable frequency drive by which spindle speed is changed by Variable frequency drive. 3. Object of the invention The principle object of the present invention is to construct the machine where honing head is in two vertical plates connected to each other by pillars mounted on base plate to reduce the cost. The further object of the present invention is to transmit electric motor vibration towards ground so as not to affect the accuracy by mounting the spindle motor on the frame of the machine below the honing head. The further object of the present invention is to eliminate the dial for simplification of construction. The further object of the present invention is to have Pressure adjustment by only one Pressure knob instead of two. The further object of the present invention is to use Variable frequency drive to change the spindle speed by simply rotating pot of Variable frequency drive for ease of operation. The further object of the present invention is to construct machine which is cost effective by reducing the number of the components and simplified construction. The further object of the present invention is to construct the machine which is simple in operation. 4 Brief description of the drawing Fig. A - Mild Steel Fabricated Body 1. Top Cover. 2. Pressure Knob Fig D is illustrated for the side view of Pedal Linkage assembly and Fig E is illustrated for Front view of Pedal Linkage assembly. Hinge Lever (20) as seen in Fig. B, Fig. D and Fig. E is connected to Hinge (33), is connected to Bridge (32), is connected to hinge hook (34) and Pedal (31). Pedal rod (36) is connected to Pedal (31) at bottom while it is connected to limit switch Sensor (40) at top of Pedal (31) is retained by lower Spring Hook (37), connected to spring (35 & 38), connected to Spring Hook (34 & 39). Electric Motor (41) is mounted on Motor Bracket (40) which in turn mounted on Mild Steel Fabricated Body (Fig. A). Belt (42) is used to transmit the power from motor to Spindle Pulley (15). Fig F is illustrated for Electrical circuit diagram. Fig G is illustrated Machine Assembly drg. for all major functional components covered in Claims. 6. Working operation of the Manual Honing Machine. Pedal (31) pressing starts the honing operation. On pressing the pedal (31) the limit switch (43) puts the circuit ON. The electric motor (41) which is mounted below the Honing Head (Fig B), starts rotating the spindle (10) and the honing tool mounted on the spindle (10). Due to pedal (31) pressing the linkage assembly ;Hinge Lever (20), bridge (32), Hinge (33), spring (35 & 38), Spring Hook (34 & 39) ; pull the rail assembly (17) and the push rod (13) is moved forward to expand the honing stone. While honing tool is rotating the honing stone expands. The component is reciprocated manually. Thus the material is removed from inside bore of the component. The pressure on the honing stone is set.by pressure knob (30) and maximum lift of the honing stone is set by feed knob (29). The spindle speed can be adjusted by Variable Frequency Drive (46). 7 CLAIMS We claim, 1.
