A DOUBLE ROLLER GIN WITH IMPROVED POWER TRANSMISSION MECHANISM FOR ROLLER AND BEATER

Abstract The double roller gin is consisting of two counter rotating leather rollers, oscillating beater, fixed knives and chain and sprocket arrangement. This double roller gin has side frames, which are made of CR alloy plates instead of casted frames. An improved power transmission system consisting of triplex chain and sprocker mechanism for rotating the rollers and oscillating the beater in double roller gin. Right hand side roller (roller no.1) is rotated in anticlockwise direction by a triplex chain to adjust the appropriate chain tension. Desired rpm of roller is achived by this mechanism. Rpm of roller can be changed with change of sprocket attached to roller shaft. The left hand side roller (roller no.2) is rotated in opposite direction (i.e. in clockwise direction) to that of right hand side roller (roller no.1) with the help of idler sprockets by the same triplex chain. Precise pressure of rollers on the fixed knives is applied with the help of push-pull and locking mechanism instead of dead weights. This machine requires2 sq. meter space whereas conventional machine requires 4 sq. meter space, therefore there is a saving of space.

The present invention pertains to improved power transmission for roller and beater in double roller gin. Gin machine is a machine in which seed cotton is separated into lint (fibre) and seed. A machine is based on commercial models of double roller (DR) gin and improvement in design of power transmission system to the beater and rollers is incorporated. Improvement in the mechanism which applies pressure scientifically, uniformly and precisely on the roller is also incorporated. Double roller gin consists of two spirally grooved leather roller pressed against a fixed knife, are made to rotate. Two moving blades combined with seed grids constitutes a central assembly known as beater which oscillates by means of a crank or eccentric shaft, close to the fixed knife. When the seed cotton is fed to the machine in action, fibres adhere to the rough surface of the roller are carried in between the fixed knife and roller in such a way that the fibres are partially gripped between them. The oscillating knife beats the seed and separates the fibres. This process is repeated for number of times and due to push-pull-hit action the fibres are separated from the seed, carried forward on the roller and dropped out of machine. The ginned seeds drop down through the seed grid, which is oscillating along with beater.
Prior Art
Double roller (DR) gins are commonly used in rural India for ginning i.e.
separating the lint from seed. Britishers introduced Middleton Double Roller gin manufactured by Piatt Saco Lowell (UK) Ltd and Monforts M. Gladbach (Volkart) DR gin in India. After India"s independence local manufacturers viz. Bajaj, Nipha, Jadhao, National, U. D. Patel, K.K. etc. have started manufacturing DR gins similar to Middletone DR gin and Monforts DR gin. Major technological design modifications were not implemented for the improvement of the machine particularly in power transmission system to reduce the energy consumption, to reduce the maintenance cost & system for applying roller pressure on fixed knife.
Present DR gin carries several drawbacks. One of the most important drawbacks is complicated power transmission system, and includes several planetary gears, which not only oscillates beater but also rotate the rollers. This system requires about twenty kg grease or eighteen litre lubricating oil per machine per ginning season. This grease/oil

due to leakage fall on the floor surface, and damages the lint quality, which is considered as serious contamination worldwide.
In conventional design, more than twenty bearings of different sizes and types are used which makes the maintenance complicated and costly. Also lubrication points are more than twenty in numbers. Uniform pressure between fixed knife and roller plays an important role in quality and out put of the lint. In conventional design the roller is pressed against fixed knife with the help of hanging dead weights. This method does not ensure uniform pressure between roller and fixed knife, occupies more space, also makes it difficult to remove the roller for maintenance.
Now in order to understand the present invention, following descriptions are given with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1. Represents power transmission from electric motor to main shaft on which

The side frames [1] of modified DR gin are made of CR alloy. Flywheel with pulley [11] & V-belt [10] arrangement is provided to transmit power from electric motor to eccentric shaft. Connecting rod [6] is fixed on eccentric shaft. Small head of connecting rod is fixed to oscillating head [7], which oscillates the beater at desired strokes per minutes Right hand side roller [12] is rotated in anticlockwise direction by triplex chain [9] - sprocket [3] arrangement. Idler sprockets [4] are provided to triplex chain to adjust the appropriate chain tension. Desired rpm of roller is achieved by this mechanism. Rpm of roller can be changed with change of sprocket attached to roller shaft. The left hand side roller [12] is rotated in opposite direction (i.e. in clockwise direction) with the help of triplex chain and sprocket [2] to that of the right hand side roller. This will also avoid the use of grease/oil and reduce the repairs and maintenance cost.
The hanging weights used for applying pressure on roller against fixed knife are eliminated by providing push-pull and locking mechanism (4 in numbers) attached to bearing houses (4 in numbers) in which both the ends of rollers are fixed, are placed at an angle for increasing and reducing the roller pressure on fixed knife. This system is more scientific way of applying pressure uniformly and precisely on the roller.
Beater is connected to crank i.e. connecting rod [6] by oscillating head [7] with the help of head pin. Crank is oscillated by eccentric mounted directly on the main shaft. Hence beater achieves the oscillating movement. Nut & screw mechanism [8] is provided from top of the side frames to adjust the height of the beater in respect of fixed knife. Seed is collected through seed chute.
Due to this modified design the number of lubricating points are reduced to two only. The improved power transmission in DR gin is simple in operation, reduced in weight and space, minimized lubricating points. It requires grease in very small quantities.

4. We claim
1. An improved power transmission system consisting of triplex chain and
sprocket mechanism for rotating the rollers and oscillating the beater is

provided-A small helical gear [13] having 16 teeth is mounted on eccentric shaft, which rotates the big helical gear having 84 teeth as shown in Fig.l. A triplex driving sprocket [15] having 15 teeth is fixed on shaft of big helical gear [14]. Bower transmission from driving sprocket to driven sprockets [16, 2, 3, 17, 4 and 18] to rotate the rollers with the help of triplex
chain [9] is shown in Fig. 2.
2. An improved power transmission system in which, right hand side roller (roller no.l) is rotated in anticlockwise direction by a triplex sprocket and chain [9] arrangement. Idler sprockets [16, 17, 4 and 18] are provided to triplex chain to adjust the appropriate chain tension. Desired rpm of roller is achieved by this mechanism. Rpm of roller can be changed with change of sprocket attached to roller shaft. The right hand side roller (roller no.2) is rotated in opposite direction (i.e. in clockwise direction) to that of left hand side roller (roller no.l). This arrangement for power transmission is the replacement of planetary gearbox arrangement in conventional DR gin.
3. A roller gin either of the preceding claims a machine in which application of precise roller pressure on fixed knife is provided.
4. This double roller gin has side frames, which are made of CR alloy plates instead of casted frames.
