AN ADJUSTABLE INSULATING HOOD FOR ELECTRICAL TERMINATION;
LARSEN & TOUBRO LIMITED A COMPANY INCORPORATED UNDER THE COMPANIES ACT, 1956, WHOSE ADDRESS IS L&T HOUSE, BALLARD ESTATE, MUMBAI - 400 001, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA.

THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION PARTICULARLY DESCRIBES THE NATURE OF THIS INVENTION AND THE MANNER IN WHICH IT IS TO BE PERFOMED.

Therefore, there is a requirement for an insulation hood which can be used for all types of electrical cables including copper cables and aluminium cables when used on similar Switchgear electrical terminations. The present invention provides an adjustable insulation hood for electrical terminations, particularly for Switchgear products. The inventive insulation hood provides insulation to all types of cables or lugs including aluminium and copper lugs. Unlike the existing protective hoods, the inventive insulation hood can be adjusted even after mounting on the switchgear product which preclude potential shock hazard. Moreover, it provides a shield between the adjacent terminations thereby increases electrical clearance between the adjacent terminations as well as lug barrels over an extended length.
The present invention provides adjustable insulation hood which can be
used for single termination of switchgear products.
The present invention provides adjustable insulation hood which can be
used for three or four terminations of switchgear products.

FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to insulation hoods for electrical terminations,
particularly to Switchgear Product Terminations.
BACKGROUND
Various types of insulation hoods are available for electrical terminations.
Lugged cables are generally used for switchgear products, which have
protruding terminations. There is a risk of human contact with the live
termination and lug barrel during work, which necessitates the use of
insulations to such electrical terminations.
It is also known that protective shrouds, insulation barriers and the like
provide protection against such accidental contact with electrical
terminations. Further, they are also known to increase air clearances
between electrical terminations preventing flashover between electrical
terminations.
Japanese Patent No. JP11167854 discloses an electromagnetic contractor
with a terminal covering made of an electric insulation material having a
guidance protruding line formed in the terminal covering including a slide
support which extends from both sides to the arc box. Further, slide guide
rails are provided on the sides of the arc box to engage the slide support of
terminal covering. By this engagement, the terminal covering slides in the
direction which opens and closes the arrangement section of the terminal to
the arc box. The terminal covering is provided with a hole having a screw
thread engaging the terminal covering to the arc box. The slide is regulated
by the length of the hole and screw thread in arbitrary positions of the slide
with the limits from the arc box. Two terminal coverings, right and left, are

2

provided to cover terminations on both the sides of the arc box. The
terminal covering is drawn out to cover the sides of the arch box.
The terminal covering of Japanese Patent caters to cover only the projecting
length of the terminal. Further, the arc box should be provided with slide
guide rails to engage the slide support. The terminal covering is not being
suitable for use in any electrical termination, as the arc box has to be
modified to engage the slide support. Further, the terminal covering isolates
terminals only for a length of the projection of the terminal.
The protective hoods existing in the art are of fixed length and therefore,
protective hoods of different sizes are required to suit different type of
electrical cables or lugs such as copper cables or lugs and aluminum cables
or lugs when used for similar electrical terminations.
Therefore, there is a requirement for an insulation hood that can suit
different type of electrical cables or lugs when used for similar electrical
terminations.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an insulation hood which
can be used for all types of electrical cables including copper cables or lugs
and aluminum cables or lugs when used on similar electrical terminations,
for example switchgear terminations.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
The present invention provides an adjustable insulation hood for electrical
termination comprising an outer hood for covering a projecting length of a
terminal; and lockably arranged to an inner hood whereby the hood is
adjusted to an extended length of a lug barrel for providing isolation of
termination. The outer hood is provided with barriers and the inner hood is

3

provided with a shield to provide isolation between the terminations far
beyond the length of the terminals. A slit on outer hood lockably adjusts the
length of the hood and a screw lockably engages the outer hood and the
inner hood.
The insulation hood of the present invention may be fitted on to an electrical
termination having a copper lug or an aluminum lug or both. The length of
the hood may be adjusted according to the length of the lug even after
mounting.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Fig 1 shows the adjustable insulation hood according to the present
invention having an outer hood (10) for covering a projecting length of a
terminal (not shown) lockably arranged to an inner hood (12). The outer
hood is further provided with barriers (14) (as shown in figure 2) for
providing isolation of terminals (not shown). The outer hood (10) is provided
with slits (18) for lockably adjusting the length of the inner hood (12). Holes
(28) are provided on the outer hood (10) for mounting the insulation hood

4

onto a Switchgear (30). as shown in figure 4. Figure 4,5;and 6 shows the insulation hood mounted on the Switchgear (30). The barriers (14) have a slanting portion (34) to accommodate the inner hood. The slanting portions (34) may be straight or curved as desired to accommodate the inner hood. Figure 3 shows the inner hood (12) of the present invention having shields (16) for providing isolation between the terminals (not shown). A slit (20) is provided on one side of the inner hood (12) to adapt to the barriers (14) of the outer hood (10) in a sliding manner. A threaded hole (32) is provided on the inner hood (10) to lockably engage the outer hood through the slit (18). A screw (22) lockably engages the inner hood (12) to the outer hood (10). The insulation hood of the present invention may be fitted on to an electrical termination having a copper lug or an aluminum lug or both. The length of the insulation hood may be adjusted according to the length of the lug even after mounting. For example, when an electrical termination with copper lug is replaced to an aluminum lug, the insulation hood of the present invention shall be extended and locked to provide insulation for an aluminum lug. Similarly, when an electrical termination having an aluminum lug is replaced to a copper lug, the hood shall be adjusted to suit the copper lug. The insulation hood of the present invention may be adjusted according to the requirement; and mounted on the switchgear. Whenever required, the insulation hood may be adjusted even after mounting on the switchgear. Further, the insulation hood shall be easily mounted on the switchgear of any type. It does not require any modification in the switchgear to adjust the insulation hood to provide isolation. The insulation hood of the present

5

invention shall be used on single termination as shown on Figure 6 or on
three terminations as shown in Figure 4.
The insulation hood according to the present invention may alternatively be
mounted on switchgear with the inner hood and the outer hood may be
adjusted for providing insulation.
Preferably, the insulation hood may be made of an insulating material.
