INTELLIGENT COMPOSITE DISPLAY SYSTEM

Abstract Intelligent Composite Display System is applicable for display of energy registration of multiple number of consumers consolidated at one point. It consists of micro-controller based unit with display driver, LCD-glass, serial ports and associated electronics. It also stores relevant data in the data memory. This memory is non volatile and keeps the information intact in case of power failure. It displays kWh, MD, Date, Time etc. in a scrolling fashion. The LCD is having 2 or more rows of multi digit multi segment displays to display individual kWh, MD alongwith current date and time in an manual/auto scrolling mode. The serial port is for data down loading using MRI. This is an individual unit, hence, repair/replacement at site is possible. In case of malfunctioning of the unit, it can be replaced without affecting the energy registration. Non-metallic housing is provided for protection against electric shock.

FIELD OF INVENTION
The Invention describes Intelligent Composite Display System to display
different parameters of energy measurement. This is a stand alone display
for energy registration.
The conventional system available is for displaying different measured
parameters of individual meter. This display is an integral part of the meter.
So in case of a number of meters, individual energy meter with integrated
LCD Display are being used for energy registration. This process of display
is cumbersome and requires a lot of space for installation, for multiple
number of meters in one place.
PRIOR ART
Due to passage of time, the dwelling pattern has changed from individual
houses to "Residential Flats". Now-a-days even small scale manufacturing &
service industries are operating at "Flatted Factories". Thus it is obvious that
there are large numbers of individual customers in one premises now. So
with the existing system of displaying the energy registration and other
parameters are provided separately for each and every meter individually.
This makes the cabling system for individual meters very lengthy, clumsy,
jumbled up, cumbersome. Fig. 1 shows an example of existing layout for 4
nos. of Single Phase Meter installation & its complexicity. Even physical
placement of multiple number Energy Meters become difficult due to lack of
available space. Also if display is not working properly entire meter is to be
replaced.
Problem With Prior Art:-
1. In case of display malfunctioning the total energy meter is to be
replaced.
2. Space requirement will be high due to installation of so many
individual display units for each meter. Most houses and factory units
do not have enough space to accommodate multiple meters & its
wiring.
3. Repair / replacement at site of display section is not possible since it is
an integral part of the meter.
How this invention seeks to solve the problems:-
The invention relates to an Intelligent Composite Display System wherein
the energy consumption of a number of users can be displayed from one
group metering units for multiple number of consumers.
In this design, the intelligent composite display system is for the display of
registered energy consumption of one or multi number of consumers.
The invented design concept, shown in fig. 2, is suitable for display of
energy registration and other related parameters for single phase, three
phase or combination of single phase and three phase energy measurement
system.
The objects of the present invention are as under:
1. Display of energy registration of multiple number of consumers
consolidated at one point.
2. This is an individual unit, hence, repair/replacement at site is easily
possible.
3. In case of malfunctioning of the unit, it can be replaced without
affecting the energy registration.
4. The display is at a consolidated point, hence, saving in space.
The Intelligent Composite Display System according to the present invention
is very convenient, space saving and easy to install and maintain.
Since many apparently different embodiments of the present invention
could be made without departing from scope and spirit thereof, it is
intended that the description of the invention stated herein be interpreted as
being illustrative only and not limiting in any manner whatsoever.
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
This is an individual micro -controller based unit with display driver, LCD -
glass, serial ports and associated electronics.
The signal received from the measurement unit through serial port is
processed to display kWh, MD, Date, Time etc in a scrolling fashion in the
LCD. The LCD is having 2 or more rows of multi digits multi segment
displays to display individual kWh, MD alongwith current date and time in
a manual/auto scrolling mode. The other serial port is for data down
loading using MRI.
As shown in Fig. 2, the functional description is as under:
I- SERIAL COMMUNICATION & LOGIC CIRCUIT
It receives registered energy data from energy measurement unit and then
provides the information to micro controller for further processing required
for display. It also enables the Meter Reading Instrument (MRI) connection
for downloading of stored data.
II. MICRO CONTROLLER & DATA MEMORY
On receipt of information through communication port, it processes the
received data, and sends required information to Display Driver for
displaying data in LCD glass. It also stores relevant data in the data memory.
This memory is non volatile and keeps the information intact in case of
power failure, it also enables the Serial Port to be connected to Meter
Reading Instrument (MRI) for data downloading upon request from MRI.
HI. DISPLAY DRIVER
It receives required information from micro controller & data unit and
drives the identified signals to LCD display section for displaying data in
LCD glass.
IV. DISPLAY (LIQUID CRYSTAL TYPE)
On receiving processed signal, LCD displays kWh, MD, Date, and Time etc.
in a scrolling fashion. The LCD is having 2 or more rows of multi digits
multi segment displays to display individual kWh, MD along with current
date and time in an manual auto scrolling mode.
VARIETIES Of ARRANGEMENTS POSSIBLE WITH INTELLIGENT
COMPOSITE DISPLAY SYSTEM
1 ntelligent Composite Display System can have varieties of arrangements, as
under:
I. As shown in Fig-3, arrangement with split Energy Meter ( Single
Unit).
II. As shown in Fig-4, arrangement with split Energy Meter (Multiple
Unit).
III. As shown in Fig-5, arrangement with split Group Energy Metering
System (Single Unit).
IV. As shown in Fig-6, arrangement with split Group Energy Metering
System (Multiple Unit).
Statement of Invention
Accordingly the invention describes Intelligent Composite Display System
for metering of multi number of meters. The system can be used for
Electronic kWh Type, Trivector Type with AMR facilities.
The serial port is for data down loading using MRI. This is an individual
unit, hence, repair/replacement at site is possible. In case of malfunctioning
of the unit, it can be replaced without affecting the energy registration. It is
very convenient, space saving and easy to install and maintain. Non-metallic
housing is provided for protection against electric shock.
Intelligent Composite Display System can have varieties of arrangements, as
under :
- Arrangement with split Energy Meter ( Single Unit).
- Arrangement with split Energy Meter (Multiple Unit).
- Arrangement with split Group Energy Metering System (Single Unit).
- Arrangement with split Group Energy Metering System (Multiple
Unit).
The designed intelligent composite display system is having following
features:
- Latest state-of-the-art micro controller based system.
- System can be with in-built power supply i.e. directly driven from
single phase or three phase - ac mains supply.
- System can be powered using low voltage dc power supply available
from Serial Port.
- System can be powered using external Power Supply.
- Highly reliable extremely long life memory to store display data.
- Data retention even in case of power failure.
- Wired connection with measurement unit through Serial
Communication (eg. RS-232, RS-485, PLCC etc.)
Wireless connection with measurement unit using GSM/COM A/RF/
Blue Tooth technology.
Industrial grade LCD with pins for reliable, rugged connection.
Specially designed LCD glass to display different measured
parameters.
Most sophisticated display driver to control display.
Tailor made software to display different parameter as per customer
requirement.
Manual or automatic scrolling display, facility.
Display can be for single unit, individual multiple units or single
display with scrolling facility for multiple units.
Scrolling of display can be automatic or manual using Push Button
provided for the job.
System is suitable for Single Phase, Three Phase or combination of
Single & Three Phase.

2. The device as claimed in claim 1, wherein registered energy data from
energy measurement unit is received by serial communication & logic
circuit.
3. The device as claimed in claim 1 and 2 wherein said Micro controller
and data memory used for processing information, is non volatile and
keeps the information intact in case of power faiure display driver.
4. The device as claimed in claim 1 and 3 wherein said display driver
section consists of various electronics to facilitate display of registered
energy data
5. The device as claimed In claim 1 and 4 wherein liquid crystal type
display section consists of LCD glass having 2 or more rows of multi
digits multi segment displays.
6. Intelligent composite display system as claimed in any of the
preceding claims for use in display of registered energy data for Energy
Meter ( Single Unit or Multiple Unit), Group Energy Metering System
(Single Unit or Multiple Unit) and plurality of consumer connections.
