A METHOD OF MANUFACTURE OF ARTICLES OF GLAZED CERAMIC/CERAMIC COMPOSITES ON METAL SUBSTRATES

Abstract A method of manufacture of articles of glazed ceram ic/ -ceramic composites on metal substrates consisting of near net shape form ing of ceram ic/ceram ic composite members by plasma spraying comprising the steps of feeding ceram ic powder, of size 45 -90 microns, into the . plasma gun ofaplasmaspraying apparatus by using an i.. inert carrier gas; spraying the resulting molten ceram ic on to a substrate of a shape necessary to produce the shape of the said m em bers, the surface of the said substrate being knurled; and stripping off the plasm a sprayed ceram ic body from the substrate by means such as controlled leaching with acid or by cryogenic treatm ent.

We Claim :
1. A method of manufacture of articles of glazed ceramic/ceramic composites on metal substrates consisting of near net shape forming of ceramic/ceramic composite members by plasma spraying, comprising the steps of feeding ceramic powder into the plasm a gun of a plasma spraying apparatus by using an inert carrier gas; spraying the resulting molten ceramic on to a substrate of a shape necessary to produce tie shape of the said members, and stripping off the plasma sprayed ceramic body from the substrate by means such as controlled leaching with acid or by cryogenic treatment characterised k that the ceramic powder fe of stet 45-90 m icron and in that the surface of the said substrate is knurled.
2. The method as claimed in Claim I wherein the acid is nitric acid.
3. The method as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the acid is sulphuric acid.
4. The method as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims wherein the cryogenic treatment is carried out at temperatures of minus 25 degree C to minus 50 degree C.
5. The method as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims wherein the inert carrier gas is argon.
6. The method as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims wherem the ceram ic powder is alumina-titania powder.
