A DEVICE FOR REDUCING FUEL CONSUMPTION DURING DECELERATION PERIODS OF MOTOR VEHICLES

Abstract A device for reducing fuel consumption;duringt deceleration periods of a motor vehicle, comprising a chamber provided with a normally closed one-way air inlet valve; sensor-means for connection to the manifold of the vehicle for sensing vacuum pressure therein, said sensor-means,whenever the sensed vacuum pressure exceeds a predetermined value causing the air inlet valve to open and t5hus let in atmospheric air in the chamber and thence into the pilot jet unit of the vechicle, thereby reducing the vacuum pressutre,in the said unit,to the said predetermined value.

This invention relates to a device for reducing fuel consumption during deceleration periods in motor vehicles by-providing a leaner fuel mixture for combustion. Consequently the device also reduces pollution.
It is known that during deceleration periods of a motor vehicle, such as, a motorcycle, inlet manifold vacuum will increase, sucking in a larger amount of air fuel mixture into the engine than normal. This amount of air fuel mixture is not properly used, since no power is required during deceleration and therefore goes away as unbumt hydrocarbons which is a hazardous pollutant. Such a situation also results in loss of fuel.
The various features of this invention will be apparent from the following further description.
The device for reducing fuel consumption during deceleration periods of a motor vehicle, according to this invention, comprises a chamber provided with a normally closed oneway air inlet valve; sensor-means for connection to the manifold of the vehicle for sensing vacuum pressure therein, said sensor-means, whenever the sensed vacuum pressure exceeds a predetermined value, causing the air inlet valve to

open and thus let in atmospheric air into the chamber and then into the pilot jet unit of the vehicle, thereby reducing the vacuum pressure, in the said unit, to the said predetermined value.

This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which schematically illustrate in Figs. 1 and 2 the working and normal conditions of one of various possible embodiments of the device proposed herein by way of example and not by way of limitation, C is a chamber housing a vacuum operated one way valve incorporated in the regular carburettor. provided for connection to the manifold M
of the engine of the vehicle for sensing vacuum pressure therein. The said sensor-means, whenever the sensed
vacuum exceeds a predetermined value, causes the air inlet
valve VI to open and thus let in atmospheric air from the
chamber C and thence into the pilot jet unit J of the vehicle, thereby reducing the vacuum pressure, in the Unit J, to the said predetermined value. Needless to say, the vacuum pressure in the manifold M is also felt inside the pilot jet unit J.
In other words during deceleration period, the vacuum in the manifold becomes high and when it exceeds the pre-

determined value, it is felt by chamber 'C2' and thereby actuating the diaphragm 'D' to move against spring force and the valve 'V' moves from its seat. This enables the atmospheric air enters the pilot jet at G, this destroys the vacuum at Pilot jet 'J' and there by reducing the vacuum at pilot jet 'J' to the pre-determined value and this enables the required amount of air fuel mixture only to enter into the manifold M.
In the normal condition, the spring forces the diaphragm and the valve to seat in the seating place.
The chamber C, in the embodiment illustrated, is divided into first and second parts CI and C2 by the diaphragm D.
Means such as a metering valve are provided for the part CI of the chamber at G to allow the air into the pilot jet unit J in a regulated flow.
The terms and expression herein are of description and not of limitation, in as much as various other embodiments of the device proposed herein are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention.
