Abstract | An improved rotary compressor (300) comprises a normally open dischage valve assembly (330) for controlling compressed refrigerant flow the discharge chamber (322) through the compression members. This controlling of flow results in an incressed performance for the compressor by reducing recompression volume and the elimination of reverse rotation at shut down. The discharge valve assembly comprises a valve seat (322), a valve plate (134) and a valve stop (136) secured within a recess (326) formed within the compressor. The valve stop and the valve seat have a contoured surface which is engaged by the valve plate when it opens and closes. The contoured surface controls the movement of the valve plate.
