Title of Invention

AN ALTERNATOR WITH VARIABLE OUTPUT VOLTAGE

Abstract An alternator with output-voltage comprising a stator coil winding of N strands per pole corresponding to N value of the output voltage required; and switching means which connects the said strands together in predetermined relationships, to create a predetermined number of turns of the said winding necessary to produce predetermined values of voltage at the output terminals of the said alternator.
Full Text This invention relates to an alternator with variable output voltage.
During the operation of an alternator, it becomes necessary to run the same at one or more valuer, of output voltage depending upon the requirements of" specific applications.
This invention proposes an alternator which Ls capable of providing variable .output voltage values without the need for carrying out any major constructional changes in the alternator system.
The speed of the prime mover driving the alternator remains unaltered as long as the load on the J atter is within design limits.
The change-over to various output voltage values is achieved quickly and effortlessly.
The various features of this invention will be discernible from thfe following further description thereof given hereunder.
The alternator with variable output-voltage, according to this invention, comprises a stator coil winding of N strands

per phase corresponding to N values of the output voltage required; and switching means which connect the said strands- together in predetermined relationships, to create a predetermined number of turns of the said winding necessary to produce predetermined values of voltage at the output term inals of the said alternator.
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example and not by way of limitation one of possible embodiments of the alternator proposed herein.
Fig. 1 illustrating the phase winding of a normal alternator
Fig.2 illustrating the phase winding of the alternator proposed herein
Fig. 3 illustrating a layout diagram of the said embodiment
The proposed alternator G will be seen to have N strands per phase (Fig.2) corresponding to X values of the output voltage. The prime mover driving the alternator is indicated by P.

required. Fig. 1 illustrates the winding of the normal alternator. ,
Switching means B are provided and these means connect the said strands together in predetermined relationships, to create a predetermined number of turns of the said winding necessary to produce predetermined values of voltage at the output terminals of the said alternator.
The cross sectional area of each of the N strands can be a fraction of the cross-sectional area of the conductor of the winding- of the corresponding known standard alternator so that the sum total of the cross-sectional areas of the N strands substantially equals the cross-sect]onal area of the said conductor.
One of possible forms of the switching means comprise an electrical switching system whereby, on manual actuation of the said means, the N strands are connected together in the manner stated.
Alternatively, the switching means comprise on electronic switching system, whereby, on manual actuation of the said

means, the N strands are connected together in the manner stated.
Alternatively, the switching means comprise a manual switching system e.g. multipole-multithrow switches, whereby on manual actuation of the said means the N strands are connected together in the manner stated.
A chart indicates as to how the switching means are to be
operated manually to connect the N strands in a
predetermined manner to obtain the desired value of the
output-voltage.
Depending upon the value of the output voltage required, the N strands will be connected in series, parallel, series-parallel relationship.
The alternator proposed herein will have a single phase or a multi-phase winding.
The terms and expressions herein are of description and not of limitation, there being no intention of excluding any equivalents of the features illustrated and described, but it is understood that various of the embodiments of the alternator proposed herein are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention.
