This invention relates to an apparatus for applying brake to the rotating elements of a lap package production machine to halt the machine rapidly.
The lap package production machine or lap winding machine is used for the production of laps from slivers produced in the draw frames. Essentially the lap package production machine comprises two lap rollers drivingly connected to a motor through suitable drive means, for supporting the lap during the lap built up. Such lap package production machines, employed for the production of laps which are fed to the combing machines is known. Normally drafted sUvers withdrawn from sliver cans by means of suitable feeding arrangement consisting number of roller pairs drivingly connected to the main motor of the machine and the shver is fed to the drafting arrangements. E)rafted sliver in the form of lap fed to calendar rollers for compacting and then to a lap spool supported upon two lap rollers. A common drive motor is used for driving all the above drive elements through suitable drive means. The lap package production machine has to be rapidly stopped at the situations such as when one of the slivers from the feed can is missing or when the lap build up reached the pre determined size. The drive motor is deactivated or stopped and a brake, which is normally either integrated in to the drive motor or acts directly on the motor shaft, is operated in order stop the machine rapidly.
When the size of the lap build in the lap package production machine is relatively heavy of the order of 25 kg. or more with associated higher delivery speeds for instance 120M/min, and if the machine is stopped rapidly by the application of the brake, heavy loading on the motor shaft

takes place due to the kinetic energy of the lap rollers and the lap. This will cause premature failure of the motor which is undesirable.
It is an object of the invention to provide a construction of lap package production machine which does not suffer from the above-mentioned draw back.
With reference to the accompanying drawings :
Figure 1 shows the apparatus for a[^lying brake to the rotating elements of a lap package production machine.
Main motor (M) is mounted on a motor plate and drivingly connected to drive the main shaft (1) mounted on anti-friction bearings and rigidly mounted on the machine frame, such that the axes of main motor (M) and main shaft (1) are parallel to each other. The drive shaft (1) is disposed such that its axes is parallel to the drafting rollers, calendar rollers (11, 12, 13 14) and lap rollers (20,23). Driven pulley (2) is rotateably mounted on one side of the main shaft (1) and driven by a drive pulley (4) mounted on the main motor (M) and a flat belt (3). Another flat belt pulley (5) is mounted on the main drive shaft (1) and drivingly connected to drive the drafting rollers, creel rollers and the table calendar rollers. Brake disc (6) and chain wheel (8) are mounted on the main drive shaft (1). Brake (7), for example pneumatic brake arrangement, is disposed such as to hold the brake disc (6) when actuated, for example by electro pneumatic means. Chain wheel (8) drives the calendar roller (11) by chain wheel (10) and chain (9). Calendar roller (U) drives the other calendar rollers (12, 13, 14) through gears (15,

16, 17, 18. Calendar roller (11) drives the lap roller (20) through chain wheel (19, 21) and chain (22). Lap roller (20) drives the lap roller (23) by chain wheels (24, 25, 26, 27) through chains (28,29).
When the machine is to be stopped due to reasons like a missing sliver or completion of lap build up, the motor (M) is decelerated, brake (7) is actuated to hold the brake disc (6), and the machine is stopped rapidly. Since the brake arrangement is separated from the motor shaft by mounting the same on a separate intermediate drive shaft using flat belt drive for the power transmission, with inherent sUp, the kinetic energy generated by the lap rollers (20, 23) and the lap, due to the leaking, will not have any undue effect on the main motor (M).
