Full Text

This invention relates to • Mound dressing of a three layer configuration.
While the outertaost layer, that is, the layer farthest from the wound, is air-permeable, it also acts as a barrier against liquid penetration and a barrier against air-borne bacteria. This layer prevent clothes and bed-linen of the patient being stained by exudates. The middle layer is highly absorbent for absorbing and retaining a substantial quantity of wound exudates. The lowermost layer, in contact with the wound, is soft and smooth and provides necessary comfort to the patient. The wound-contact surface of the third and lowermost layer has a shape conforming to the contour of the wound-surface.
The wound dressing, Eccording to this invention, comprises a fi rst and outermost 1ayer of medical grade non-wowen SMS fabric; said first 1ayer being superimposed on 3 second and niiddl e layer of medical grade compressed cot ton/eel lulose mixed with karays gumf said second layer being superimposed on B thi rd and wound-contact 1ayer selected from medical grade material, such as, (i) perforated non-woven fabric micro perforated film, the wound-contact surface of the third layer having s shape conforming to the contour of the wound surface, said layers being securely fastened

together at the sides.
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, the single Figure in which illustrates, by way of example, and not by way of limitation, one of various possible embodiments of the dressing proposed herein.
The wound dressing W has a first and outermost layer
F of medical grade non-woven SMS fabric. "SMS
fabric"is a non—woven composi te fabric made by using
spunbond and meltblown process.
The layer F Is supeMmposed on a second and middle layer 8 of compressed cotton/eellulose mixed with karaya gum. Whenever required the other susbtances selected from at least one of the following, namely, antiseptics, antibiotics are also mixed with the karaya gum and the cotton/callulose. The choice of antiseptics and antibiotics is prediitermined by the kind and nature of a specific application including the kind and nature of the wound with which the dressing is to be used.
The layer S is superimposed on a third and wound contact layer T of a material selected from medical grade material such as perforated non-woven fabric, micro perforated film.

he said layers are securely fastened together at the sides to prevent leakage of exudates thereat.
The outerrnost layer has air permeability and is a barrier against liquid penetration and airborne bacteria. It Is non-allergIc and skin friendly. The medical grade non-woven fabric is accepted as one of the best non-woven fabrics for bygi enic and medical use.
Karaya gum mixed, whenever required, with antiseptics and antibiotics in predlltermlned ratios satisfy various user requirements depending upon the kind and nature of the wound.
Compressed cotton/eellulosa mixed with karaya gum has very high levels of absorption of bio-fluids including blood and saline solutions. Also this has high retention cmpmcity.
Compressed cotton/cellulose is cost-effective and light-weight apart from taking less apace and maintaining lower pack temperature during normal transit.
The lowermost or wound-contact layer surface is soft

and smooth providing comfort for the user. It is non¬toxic and has high akin tolerance. It is also bio¬degradable .
Sum karaya is a naturally occurring substance available in India. Bum karaya miMed with cotton/eellulose in predetermined quantities will provide the dressings proposed herein for, different Bpplications and absorption capacities.
Illustrative of the antiseptics which are mined with the eellulose and gum karaya include turmeric, vepa and tulsi, preferably, in dry form.
The wound-contact surface of the third layer is shaped to conform to the contour of the wound-surface. For example, if the wound-surface has a concave contour, the wound-contact surface of the third layer will have a matching convex surface, preferably at the centre C, to provide adequate contact between the third layer and the wound. Thus the third layer will be composed of the aald medical grade material distributed in predetermined quantities at predetermined places in the said layer, to provide the wound-contact surface, of the said third layer, with a shape conforming to the contour of the wound-surface.
The terms and expressions herein are of description and

I CLAIMS:
1. A wound dressing comprising a first and outermost layer
of medical grade non-woven SMS fabrtci said first layer
being superimposed on a second and middle layer of medical
grade compressed cotton/cellulose mixed with karaya gum;
said second layer being superimposed on a third and wound-
contact layer selected from medical grade material* such as,
(i) perforated non-woven fabric (ii) micro perforated film,
the wound-contact surface of the third layer having a shape
conforming to the contour of the wound surface, said 1ayers
being securely fastened together at the sides.
2. A wound dressing as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the third
layer will be composed of the said medical grade material
dispersed in predetermined quantities at predetermined
places in the said layer, to provide the wound-contact
surface, of the said third layer, with a shape canforming to
the contour of the wound-surface.
3. A wound dressing substantially as herein described and
illustrated with reference to accompanying drawings.
