AN IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF THE EXTRACT FROM THE AYURVEDIC MEDICINAL PLANT "PIPPALI".

Abstract An improved process for the manufacture of the therapeutically effective extract from the Ayurvedic Medicinal plant "Pippali" comprising the steps of grading, shredding and powdering the fruit or root of the said plant "Pippali" the powdered plant undergoes steam distillation process comprising of a perforated basket comta-, ining the powdered plant (fruit or root ) in outer (304) stainless steel jacketed vessel provided with an inlet for steam & heat exchanger through which cold water is circulated* the perforated basket containing the said plant is dipped partially in water and steam under pressure, is passed through the perforated basket, the condensate/distillate containing volatile oil is collected, the two layers viz, volatile oil and water are separated by conventional methods^ the wet residue fro$ the basket in the distillation unit is transferred to a (304) stainless steel vessel provided with a stirrer, the extracting solvent is added if necessary and the mixture is stirred continuously for 18-24 hours, it is filtered in a stainless steel sparkler filterĀ» the residue is' reextracted in the-extracting solvent by continuous stirring for 8-12 hours, it is filtered and the residue is expressed in a press to recover the absorbed extract, which is filtered again and all the filtered extracts are mixed together, this mixture is concentrated in a - thin film vaporises under reduced pressure, if necessary it may be converted int&<a dry p@wder by spsray drying at a temperature -. not exceeding 55 C,the volatile oil is collected from the said herbal plant by steam distillation, is mixed with the concentrated or dry powder extract to get a uniform mixture0 It is used as a tonic stimulant, stomaclic, in digestive disorders, in cough bronchitis and other repiratory disorders.
