Title of Invention

TOPI NUT FOR STEEL CHANNEL SLEEPERS ON RAILWAY BRIDGES AND BOLT NUT ARRANGEMENTS

Abstract The present invention of topi nut relates to anti rotation arrangement of nuts provided on steel channel sleepers on railway I bridges and bolt nut arrangement. This invention relates to an anti rotation arrangement on the existing steel channel sleepers on railway bridges and bolt nut arrangements. The topi nut made up of fabricated metal sheet or molded material with bottom part of the topi nut holding the existing nut and top part of the topi nut surrounding the bolt portion. The top or middle portion is slotted vertically. A split pin is provided through the slot in the top part/middle portion of the to pi nut and bolt hole. The split pin provided will hold the rotation of the top part or middle part of the topi nut by taking reaction from the bolt hole. The top or middle part of the topi nut will prevent the rotation of the bottom part of the topi nut. The bottom part of the topi nut will hold the nut and thus not allow any rotation of the nut or loosening of the entire assembly. ~.-
Full Text Field of the invention
The present invention relates to mechanical engineering field The device is developed to prevent rotation of nuts on steel channel sleepers on railway bridges, prevent loosing of nuts due to vibration in any nut and bolt arrangements and prevent corrosion of bolt and nut contact area by covering the threaded portion of bolt and nut. Indian railways replaced a large quantity of wooden sleepers on bridges due non availability of wooden sleepers .As steel channel sleepers are fitted with 8 sets of bolts and nuts. A large quantity of nuts and bolts are used in channel sleepers, and these fittings are subjected to vibrations due to dynamic loads of wheels of trains
Back ground of invention
Indian railways replaced a large quantity of wooden sleepers on bridges due to non availability of wooden sleepers and to reduce felling of trees for railway sleepers .As steel channel sleepers are fitted with 8 sets of bolts and nuts for each sleeper. Large quantities of nuts and bolts are used in channel sleepers, and these bolts and nuts are subjected to vibrations due to dynamic loads of wheels of trains. The problem of loosening of nuts is leading to excessive play between the fittings .The play in fittings is further leading to distortion of track parameters and leading to restricting of speed on bridges.
The bolts and nuts which are subjected to dynamic conditions are prone for loosing. The existing arrangement of castle nut and bolt with cotter pin doesn't have the provision for providing the split pin at a location where the specific torque is arrived. They have to be rotated upto a maximum of pitch to match with the hole of the bolt. This
will lead to excessive tightening or slacking of nut bolt arrangement.
The present topi nut arrangement with a groove at diagonal of the hexagonal side and another groove at the centre of the plane surface (Similar arrangement can be made for nuts of different shapes) with split pin will provide and anti rotation arrangement at the location where the specific torque is arrived. This will also provide a cover over the bolt nut arrangement from being damaged by external sources.
Summary of Invention
The object of the invention is to provide a safety device to nuts so to prevent nuts from being loosened due vibrations. The TOPI NUT provided over the existing nut will prevent the nut from being loosened and prevent all sorts of loosening of fittings of channel sleepers on bridges and there by provide a safe and less maintenance of track on Railway bridges, prevent loosing of nuts in bolt nut arrangements, avoiding rotation of nut to match with the hole of the bolt and castle nut groove thereby giving excessive torque or loosening, and provide a cover over the threaded portion and prevent it from external sources.
The TOPI NUT is made up of thin metal sheet, cast material, molded material (for example PVC, HDPV, FRP etc.). This will have five parts 1 the bottom part made up of cylindrical shape having faces same as the number of faces of the nut /double their number suitable to hold the nut and size such that the inner size of the TOPI nut is equal to the outer size of the existing nut 2 middle part of shape convenient to hold the bottom and top parts it is slotted vertically to allow the split pin to pass through the entire cross section in plan of the topi nut in slot in middle part arrangement 3. The top part of the topi nut is also in cylindrical shape and slightly in higher diameter to the bolt and it is slotted vertically to allow the split pin to pass through the entire cross section in plan in slot in top part arrangement .4 A split pin is provided passing through the slotted top portion of topi nut and into the hole of the bolt hole and taken out. 5. A top cover over the top cylindrical portion covering the threaded portion of the bolt. 6 A slot is provided in the top/middle parts
The split pin will prevent the rotation of the top/middle portion of the topi nut. The top/middle portion of the topi nut will prevent the rotation of the bottom portion of the topi nut. The bottom portion of topi nut will prevent the rotation of the nut and the top cover will prevent exposure of the threaded portion to external sources.

Detailed description of the invention :-
The invention is aimed at solving the problem of loosing of fittings on channel sleepers on railway bridges and prevent loosing of bolt nut arrangements, avoiding rotation of nut to match with the hole of the bolt and castle nut groove thereby giving excessive torque or loosening, and provide a cover over the threaded portion and prevent it from external sources.
As shown in figure 1 the topi nut is made up of metal sheet, cast material, molded material (for example PVC, HDPV, FRP etc.). of adequate thickness (as per the requirement at site which varies with the size of the nut and bolt and to the conditions the bolts and nuts are subjected to . This topi nut arrangement consists of 6 parts. The top, bottom, middle, split pin, slot and top cover. The topi nut is fabricated/molded with sheet or molding material to make one part and split pin is separate.
Mechanism of the system
The topi nut is provided over the existing nut The inner size of the bottom part of the topi nut is designed to be fit over the outer size of the existing nut up to certain height as per design requirement. The bottom part/middle part of the topi nut will hold the existing nut in its possession.
The top part of the topi nut is over the nut surrounding the bolt portion of the nut bolt assembly. The top part of the topi nut posses a slot slotted vertically in slot in top part arrangement. The size and shape of the slot depends on the size of the cotter pin to be provided.
The cotter pin is provided through the slot in the top part/middle part of the topi nut and bolt hole already existing in the bolt. The cotter pin will hold the top part/middle part of the topi nut with split pin provided through the bolt.
Due to the dynamic vibrations the entire assembly is subjected to vibrations. Due to the vibrations in the assembly the nuts have the tendency to get loose. The top part/bottom part of the topi nut which was locked with split pin through the bolt hole will prevent the rotation/loosening of the existing nut of the channel sleeper assembly with the bottom connected part of the topi nut assembly. Hence, the rotation/loosening of the nuts due to the vibrations of is completely arrested.
ADVANTAGES OF THE SYSTEM
a) The topi nuts can be provided on the existing fittings easily.
b) No assembly of the existing fitting to be removed for providing the topi nut.
c) No grooving of the existing nut is required as it is done now for providing the split pin through the nut.
d) The failure of galvanization and corrosion of nuts of channel sleepers due to slotting of the already galvanization nut is avoided.
e) Topi are provided over the existing nut in as it is condition with out further rotating the nut for matching the hole of bolt with slot
