| Abstract | This invention discloses two databases with entries from natural and artificial systems, consisting of a large number of entries in each of them. Entries in each database are carefully selected in order to demonstrate the motion characteristics of systems in different media (e.g. land, water etc.) and in different ways to execute the same task (like one can move by leaping, hopping etc). The information collected contains details about these systems in the form of written, diagrammatic, pictorial, video and animation data, and their varied motions. Using the constructs and relationships of the SAPPhIRE model, the behaviour of each system is described in the databases developed. Various analogical search strategies are developed to search for entries with potential to solve a given problem. The concepts are implemented in a piece of software called IDEA-INSPIRE. Comparative experiments using several design problems with designers indicate substantial potential for the approach in inspiring generation of novel solutions. |
