SIDE-SHIFT PROVISIONS OF THE FRONT CHASSIS OF THE
COMPACTOR FOR USE DURING SHOULDER COMPACTION
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a side shift provisions for use in a compactor,
particularly in the front chassis during shoulder compaction. The side shift of
the present invention allows a side shift of the front frame or module for
shoulder compaction.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
A compactor normally comprises a front frame or chassis held to a rear frame
or chassis, said front frame capable of having an articulation movement with
respect to the rear frame by means of self aligned bearings. The front frame
has a rotating front drum. In a likewise manner, the rear frame or chassis has a
rear rotating drum. A hydraulic motor is provided for each of the rear and
front drum for imparting a movement thereto. Each of the front and rear
rotating drum is held to its chassis through its respective bow plates and
rubber shock mounts so as to isolate the vibration.
A water tank is mounted on the rear chassis so as to sprinkle water on both
front and rear drums.

On opposite sides of the drums, a vibration hydraulic device is provided.
The device further comprises a motor to drive an eccentric.
The hydraulic motors are driven by hydraulic pumps, an engine mounted
within the hood in the front frame or chassis to drive the hydraulic pump.
During construction . of a road, when a compactor moves on the road
construction materials spread all around the road, the driver has to take care of
edges of the road being prepared. Generally the driver performs repeated
forward and backward movements of the compactor vehicle and tries carefully
to cover both the edge line, left as well as right, of the road. Such function of
covering/compacting the side edges of the road is called "shoulder
compacting".
Such shoulder compacting involves substantial effort of the driver, burns more
fuel in forward-backward runs and consumes more time in the whole exercise.
Further, in a country like India, where all the traffic moves in left side of the
road, all the vehicles including compactors are manufactured to move on left
hand side of the road. Therefore it is difficult for the driver, seated on his seat, to
see the left and right side edges of the roads.

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An object of the invention is to propose side-shift provisions of the front chassis of
the compactor for use during shoulder compaction.
Another object of the invention is to propose a compactor having efficient
side-shift provisions of the front chassis therein.
Still another object of the invention is to propose a compactor having side-
shift provisions of the front chassis therein which are simple in construction.
Still another object of the invention is to propose side-shift provisions with
the driver's chair for improving and supporting his side viewing practices.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent from
the ensuring description.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION
According to this invention, there is provided a compactor having side shift
provisions/device comprising:
i) a front chassis articulately held to a rear chassis,

ii) a rotating drum with each of the front and rear chassis and held
thereto through its respective bow plate and rubber shock mounts,
iii) a front and rear hydraulic motor for imparting drive to the front
and rear drums respectively,
characterized in that
iv) and a device for allowing the front chassis to be displaced
sideways with respect to the rear chassis.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent from
the ensuing description when read in conjunction with the accompanying
drawings and wherein:
Fig. 1 shows: Side-shift mechanism between articulately connected front and rear
chassis of the compactor for Shoulder Compaction
Fig. 2 shows: 2 Way Sliding Driver Seat, two views to represent transverse
and longitudinal movement provisions.
The present invention proposes two provisions in the compactor vehicle for
carrying out the shoulder compacting in easy and effective manner, which

particularly helps in reducing the number of forward and backward movements
of the compactor and thus ultimately saving the time, fuel and efforts of the
driver. These two main provisions are:
(a) Side-shift provision of the front chassis of the compactor for shoulder compaction
(as schematically shown and explained with the help of Figure 1): The
compactor's front body and the rear body are so engaged together and
provisioned with hydraulic jack application therein, that it allows a movement of
the front chassis in either direction, supporting the easy steering/side sift
movement of the whole vehicle;
(b) Two way sliding driver seat in transverse as well as longitudinal directions
(as schematically shown and explained with the help of Figure 2): The driver's
seat in the driver's cabin is so mounted on a particular pair of rails like platform
that the driver can mechanically slide his seat in desirable
transverse/longitudinal directions on the said platform, which may help in
providing easy and proper side viewing of the edge lines of the road as well as
position of the rollers of the compactor vehicle.
Due to these two provisions created in the compactor vehicle, not only the level
of safety in shoulder compacting process gets enhanced substantially, but such

provisions are also great help to the driver in performing shoulder compacting
during road making.
DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE
ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS;
The present invention resides in a side shift device provided in a compactor
so as to allow a displacement of the front chassis with respect to the rear
chassis. Such a side shift is required for shoulder compaction along the
edges of a road. The advantage of such a side shift device is that it reduces
the additional run required and, further, prevents damage to the border of the
road.
Reference may be made to Fig. 1. The device comprises a Link Plate (1)
mounted on rear and front chassis (2 and 2'). The link plate has a slot (3) for
accommodating a bolt (4) mounted on the rear chassis. When the bolt is in a
tightened condition, it prevents a side displacement of the front chassis. Thus,
to allow a side displacement, the bolt is loosened so that the front chassis can be
displaced sideways. Upon completion, the bolt is tightened so that the front
chassis is locked in that position. For performing shoulder compaction, the driver
seating on his seat of the compactor conveniently operates the proposed side-
shift provisions of the front chassis.

Side-shift provisions of the front chassis of the compactor for use during
shoulder compaction; wherein said side-shift provisions comprises of:
(a) Side-shift mechanism between articulately connected front (2') and rear
(2) chassis of the compactor, which mainly comprises of a link plate (1)
and a hydraulic jack (5) with means to operate it; wherein said side shift
mechanism is characterized by allowing the sideways displacement of
the front chassis (2') with respect to the rear chassis (2); and
(b) two way sliding mechanism for the driver's seat assembly (6),
realizing sliding the driver's seat in transverse and longitudinal
directions; wherein said two way sliding mechanism is
characterized by engaging the driver's seat (6) with a platform
(7), a pair of transverse levers (9) and longitudinal movement
levers (11), and pairs of transverse rails (8) and longitudinal
rails (10).

Further, a hydraulic jack (5) is provided between said front and rear chassis.
The hydraulic jack, through the suitable means for operating it from driver's
cabin, is intended for steering / side shifting of the front chassis.
Reference may be made to Fig. 2. Further, the compactor has a unique seat
assembly, wherein the driver's seat (6) is engaged with a platform (7), a pair of
transverse and longitudinal movement levers (9) and (11) respectively, and
pairs of transverse rails (8) and longitudinal rails (10). The seat (6) is mounted
on a platform (7) having a pair of rails (8) extending in a first direction, namely
the transverse direction. The seat has engaging means (9) to slidably engage the
transverse rails (8) so as to allow a movement of the seat in the transverse
direction. Such a movement in the transverse direction allows an operator to
work on the side of the compactor.
The platform is mounted on a lower pair of rails (10). The platform has
engageable means (11) to allow a slidable engagement of the platform on
said lower pair of rails (10) and allow a movement of the seat in the second
or longitudinal direction.
It is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications,
adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant
embodiments employing the concepts and features, of this invention are
intended to be within the scope of the present invention, which is further set
forth under the following claims:-
