Title of Invention

"A PROCESS FOR PREPARING A SYNTHETIC PATCH"

Abstract A process for preparing a synthetic patch comprising in the step of detoxification of a three layer synthetic fabric, said step of detoxification comprising in a first treatment in a plurality of baths having a leaching agent for removal of the leachable chemicals contained in said fabric followed by a second step of treatment for removal of the leaching agent by washing of the treated fabric with distilled water, drying and sterilizing the treated fabric.
Full Text FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a synthetic patch for dura mater repair and a process for preparation thereof.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
It is generally known that there are three layers covering the brain so as to provide a protection thereto from mechanical shocks. The outermost layer comprises the dura mater layer with an intermediate arachnoid layer and an innermost pia mater layer. A cerebospinal fluid is provided between the dura mater and arachnoid layers, which covers the brain to absorb external mechanical shocks.
A replacement of the dura mater is required in the instance of a defect in the dura mater. Such a replacement is effected by means which comprises the performance of a first surgical operation for removal of the fascia lata from the lateral side of the thigh of the patient. Thereafter, the performance of a second operation is required for replacement of the defective dura mater by the fascia lata.
Several disadvantages are associated with such a known manner of replacement of the defective dura mater. One such disadvantage is that it requires the performance of two operations. Yet another disadvantage is that the fascia lata in children is not well developed, and consequentially difficult to harvest.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An object of this invention is to propose a synthetic patch for dura mater repair.
Another object of this invention is to propose a synthetic patch for dura mater repair, which avoids operations in a patient in two different locations.
Yet another object of this invention is to propose a synthetic patch for dura mater repair, which is efficient.
Still another object of this invention is to propose a synthetic patch for dura mater repair, which has the required clinical properties.
A further object of this invention is to propose a synthetic patch for dura mater repair, which is cheap in costs.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent from the ensuing description.
STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided a process for preparing a synthetic patch for dura mater repair comprising in the step of detoxification of a three layer synthetic fabric, said step of detoxification comprising in a first treatment in a plurality of baths having a leaching agent for removal of the leachable chemicals contained in said fabric followed by a second step of treatment for removal of the leaching agent, drying and sterilizing the treated fabric.
DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with this invention a synthetic woven fabric is subjected to the step of detoxification. The woven fabric comprises a three layer
polypropylene non woven fabric. A first layer is a spun layer followed by a second layer being a melt blowen layer and a third layer which is also a spun, each of the layers being of polypropylene. A three layer non woven fabric is chosen for the synthetic patch of this invention as the pore size is smaller. It has now been found that if the pore size is substantial, the fluid can escape from the patch.
The method of detoxification consists in treating the fabric in a bath containing a leaching agent selected from isopropyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol for removal of the leachable chemicals present in the non woven fabric. Such a step may be repeated several times.
The detoxification method further comprises in washing several times with distilled water for removal of the leaching agent.
The treated patch is dried at a temperature of 45-55°C for around 15 minutes followed by sterilization by Ethylene Oxide (ETO).

It is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications, adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant embodiments employing the concepts and features of this invention are intended to be within the scope of the present invention, which is further set forth under the following claims: -

I CLAIM:
1. A process for preparing a synthetic patch comprising in the step of detoxification of a three layer synthetic fabric, said step of detoxification comprising in a first treatment in a plurality of baths having a leaching agent for removal of the leachable chemicals contained in said fabric followed by a second step of treatment for removal of the leaching agent by washing of the treated fabric with distilled water, drying and sterilizing the treated fabric.
2. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the synthetic fabric is polypropylene.
3. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the leaching agent is selected from isopropyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol.
4. A process as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the first and third layer are a spun layer and second layer is a melt blowen layer.
