Abstract The invention relates to a separating and drainage system for strengthening road or railway embankments, using textile mats, said system comprising: a top surface layer; separating layers of sand (4) overlain successively by woven-type (5) and non-woven type textile mats (7); a granular blanket(7); and concealed sub-surface rubble drains (8) encapsulated with non-woven type textile mats, said drains reaching upto the embankment slopes (12), thereby preventing soil erosion and surface subsidence by providing proper separating and drainage mediums.

WE CLAIM :
1. A separating and drainage system for strengthening road or railway embankments,
using textile mats, characterized in that, said system comprising :
- a top surface layer ;
- separating layers of sand (4) overlain successively by woven-type (5) and non-woven type textile mats (6);
- a granular blanket (7); and
- concealed sub-surface rubble drains (8) encapsulated with non-woven type textile mats, said drains reaching upto the embankment slopes (12), thereby preventing soil erosion and surface subsidence by providing proper separating and drainage mediums.

2. The separating and drainage system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said top surface comprises a layer of ballasts (1) and sand (4).
3. The separating and drainage system as claimed in the preceding claims 1 and 2, wherein said granular blanket comprises layers of not less than 300 mm thickness of sand and 300 mm thickness of stone baiiast.
4. The separating and drainage system as clamed in the preceding claims 1 to 3, wherein said encapsulated drain comprises rubbles (9) of jhama bricks or stones of at least 30 mm size.
5. The separating and drainage system as claimed in the preceding claims 1 to 4, wherein in addition to said encapsulated drain, vertical band drains provided for draining out water at suitable intervals.
