FLAME RETARDANT FILM LABEL AND THE METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME

Abstract Flame retardant film label and the method of manufacturing the same comprises of printing of a flame retardant film of desired dimensions with one or more layers of inks sequentially as required on the sub surface of the said film, the printed side of the said film is then coated with a formulated rubber primer and dried. On one side of both side release coated liner is thereafter coated and dried with formulated flame retardant adhesive, alternatively, the adhesive can be laminated to another release liner and then slit to get flame retardant transfer adhesive tape. The printed and primed side of the said film is laminated to adhesive side of the transfer adhesive tape and then punched with predetermined design to get the final labels with the desired features.

The following specification particularly describes the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
This invention relates to "Flame retardant film label " and the process of manufacturing the same. The said label comprises of two or more layers at least one of them is a flame retardant rubber based pressure sensitive adhesive and another is a flame retardant transparent/translucent film. The adhesive surface is protected with a released liner which may be paper or film.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART:
The pressure sensitive label is manufactured & used as a two component laminate. The pressure sensitive adhesives are coated on various substrates and the adhesive side covered with a release liner.
Polycarbonate film offers high heat resistance and dimensional stability for graphic arts applications. Derived from one of the world's toughest polymers, polycarbonate film offers unlimited possibilities to achieve a variety of graphic effects. Allows intricate graphic designs & permits close proximity to illumination sources. Polycarbonate film labels are used for various applications like name plates, POP displays, dead front instrument displays, Placard labels etc.
Polycarbonate film labels are often made by sub surface printing followed by lamination on printed side by double sided acrylic


adhesive based non woven tape or double sided acrylic adhesive based film or cloth tape.
However flame retardant polycarbonate film labels based on flame retardant rubber based adhesives are not known.
In the present invention an attempt has been made to develop a flame retardant film label using a flame retardant rubber based pressure sensitive adhesive .
The product of this invention provides to an end customer the advantage of getting a label, placard or graphic which is flame retardant and can be used in very sensitive areas like passenger compartment of aircrafts. The product of this invention meets the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) requirement for aircraft safety.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
"Flame retardant film label" (hereinafter called "Graphical AW") is a pressure sensitive self adhesive label in which flame retardant rubber based adhesive is coated on flame retardant transparent/translucent film such as polycarbonate, polyester, polymide as base material and the adhesive is protected with a release liner which may be paper or film.
(a) A process for manufacturing flame retardant film label comprises of printing a flame retardant transparent/translucent film of


desired dimensions with one or more layers of inks sequentially as required by known printing methods on sub surface of the said film. The said printing is manually done on smooth side of the said film.
(b) Coating the printed side of the printed film obtained above with a formulated rubber primer by known coating / printing methods and dried in a conventional method;
(c) Punching of Flame Retardant Transfer Adhesive Tape (hereafter referred as FR TAT) to desired shape and size and providing windows in selected areas where adhesive layer in the final label is not desirable, followed by lamination of the exposed adhesive layer on the printed and primed side of the flame retardant film obtained in step (b) above which is then punched with predetermined design, to get the final labels, placards or graphics having following features:

1. Printing is abrasion and scratch resistant,
2. Printing does not get affected by wiping the said label, placard or graphic surface with mild acids, alkalies, detergents, diesel, petrol etc.,
3. Thinner combination with high tack and adhesion for easy sticking on any surface,
4. Meets the flame retardant test as per FAR. 25.853 Part I, Clause V The flame retardant film should preferably be of 0.150mm to 0.30mm thickness however this is not critical and any other thickness can also be used. The said film can be preferably polycarbonate, polyester, polymide or such other similar film.
The said formulated rubber primer is manufactured by blending various materials comprising of base polymer which may be natural


and/or synthetic rubbers, curing aids such as isocynate and diluents such as hydrocarbon/ aromatic solvents like xylene to form a solution of coatable consistency and texture commensurate to the coating/printing equipment.
The said FR TAT is without any supporting material. The adhesive is based on rubbers, flame retardant additives, fillers, tackifiers 85 antioxidants. Thus in FR TAT, the thin adhesive layer will help to make both sides tacky tape and on the other hand flame retardancy of the tape will guard against fire hazards.
The manufacturing of FR TAT consists of coating a formulated pressure sensitive adhesive, formulated to impart the required flame retardancy from a blend of natural and synthetic rubbers, on one side of a liner having release coating on both sides and having sufficient differential release in order to retain the adhesive on the side to which it was originally coated, followed by drying alternately, the adhesive can be laminated to another release liner and then slit to obtain the tape in desired length and width.
The process of applying the pressure sensitive flame retardant adhesive is done by conventional method of coating equipment followed by using known drying methods. The said tape is then slit in desired length and width.
The said formulated pressure sensitive flame retardant adhesive is manufactured by blending various materials comprising elastomeric components such as natural and/or synthetic rubbers, tackifying resins of natural/synthetic type, fillers like oxides and/or hydroxides of metal, naturally occurring minerals, halogenated organic/inorganic compounds, antioxidants, flame resistant additives and followed by


dispersing in hydrocarbon/ aromatic solvents to form a compound of coatable consistency and texture commensurate to the coating equipment.
The adhesive of the FR TAT contains:-
(a) the said elastomeric component comprises of two parts (I) one or
more of the natural rubbers like RMA-1, RMA-II, RMA-III, RMA-IV,
PLC of various grades and (ii) at least one of the synthetic rubbers
such as, but not limited to, Styrene-Isoprene-Styrene (SIS), Styrene-
Butadyene- Styrene (SBS), Styrene Butadyene Rubber (SBR), VITON,
Polychloroprene etc.
(b) one or more of tackifiers which can be formed of hydrocarbon resins, rosin and rosin derivatives, polyterpenes, coumarone-indene resins, any compatible conventional tackifier or mixtures thereof. The resins can be modified with alpha methyl styrene. It has been found that a mixture of resins can provide a better balance of properties than any one resin alone.
(c) fillers which can be formed of calcium carbonate, barytes, aluminum hydroxide, zinc oxide, clay, and mixtures thereof in order to extend the adhesive and alter its appearance.
(d) flame retarding ingredients which can be formed of antimony tri oxides, halogenated organic/inorganic compounds, any compatible conventional flame retardant compounds or mixtures thereof in order to make the adhesive flame retardant.
(e) small amounts of other additives such as antioxidants, heat stabilizers, pigments and the like. Antioxidants and heat stabilizers


are to be used for improved heat stability of the adhesive. Typical
antioxidants are 2,5 ditertiary amyl hydroquinone, di-tertiary butyl
cresol and amines. At least one of the -conventional heat stabilizers
such as Zinc salts of alkyl di-thiocarbomates are used in the present
invention. Coloured pigment are added to obtain a coloured
adhesive.
The release liner used in FR TAT is a both side release coated paper or film which has sufficient differential release in order to retain the adhesive on the side to which it was originally coated. The release level, however, is sufficiently low to allow a good transfer of flame retardant adhesive from the surface of the release liner to the desired substrate during use. The release coating solution for coating paper or film used in this invention is based on Silicone or Fluorosilicone or carbamates & similar materials having property of releasing adhesive from the surface.




WE CLAIM:
1. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label comprises of :
(a) printing of a flame retardant film of desired dimensions with one or more layers of inks sequentially as required by known printing methods on the sub surface of the said film;
(b) the printed side of the said film is then coated with a formulated rubber primer by known coating methods and dried in a conventional method;
(c) coating of formulated flame retardant adhesive on one side of both side release coated liner, which may be paper or film, followed by drying using known coating and drying methods alternately, the adhesive can be laminated to another release liner and then slit to get flame retardant transfer adhesive tape (i.e. FR TAT);
(d) the printed and primed side of the flame retardant film obtained in step (b) is laminated to adhesive side of FR TAT obtained in step (c) above to get transfer adhesive tape and then punched with predetermined design, to get the final labels with the desired features.
2. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in
Claim 1, wherein the flame retardant film which may be
transparent/translucent polycarbonate, polyester or polymide and it
should preferably be of 0.150mm to 0.30mm thickness, however any
other thickness can also be used.

A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the formulated rubber primer is manufactured by blending various materials comprising natural and/or synthetic rubbers, isocynate and hydrocarbon/ aromatic solvent such as xylene to form a solution of coatable consistency and texture commensurate to the coating/printing equipment.

A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the formulated flame retardant rubber based pressure sensitive adhesive is coated on one side of a liner having release coating on both sides in a conventional method and thereafter dried by known method to get flame retardant tape;
5. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 4, wherein the formulated flame retardant rubber based pressure sensitive adhesive is manufactured by blending various materials comprising of but not limited to elastomeric polymers, tackifying resins of natural/synthetic type, fillers like oxides and/or hydroxides of metal, naturally occurring minerals, flame retardent compounds, additives and followed by dispersing in hydrocarbon /aromatic solvents to form a compound of coatable consistency and texture commensurate to the coating equipment;

6. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the elasomeric polymers used is a combination of (i) one or more of the natural rubbers like RMA-1, RMA-II, RMA-III, RMA-IV, PLC of various grades and (ii) at least one of the synthetic rubbers such as, but not limited to, Styrene-Isoprene-Styrene (SIS), Styrene-Butadyene- Styrene (SBS), Styrene Butadyene Rubber (SBR), VITON, Polychloroprene;.
7. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the tackifiers comprise one or more of tackifiers which can be formed of hydrocarbon resins, rosin and rosin derivatives, polyterpenes, coumarone-indene resins, any compatible conventional tackifier or mixtures thereof and the said resins can be further modified with alpha methyl styrene;

8. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 5, wherein fillers can be formed of calcium carbonate, barytes, aluminum hydroxide, zinc oxide, clay, and mixtures thereof;
9. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the flame retarding compounds can be formed of antimony tri-oxides, halogenated organic/inorganic compounds, any


compatible conventional flame retardant compounds or mixtures thereof;
10. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 5, wherein antioxidants are 2,5 ditertiary amyl hydroquinone, di-tertiary butyl cresol and amines;
11. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 5, wherein at least one of the conventional heat stabilizers such as Zinc salts of alkyl di-thiocarbomates are used in the present invention;
12. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the said additive comprises of coloured pigment which is used to incorporate required colour to the adhesive;
13. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed
in Claim 5, wherein required quantity of organic solvents such as
hydrocarbon/ aromatic solvents, more specifically any one or mixture
of Toluene, Hexane, Heptane etc. is used to form a compound of
coatable consistency and texture commensurate to the coating
equipment;


14. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the release paper or film used has sufficient differential released property in order to retain the adhesive on the side to which it was originally coated;
15. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the adhesive coating, drying slitting and punching of flame retardant film label, i.e. " Graphical AW" is done by conventional methods and equipments used in the industry;
16. A method of manufacturing flame retardant film label as claimed in Claims 1 to 15 above, flame retardant film label is obtained.
