ROTARY UNION FOR WATER APPLICATIONS IN A TOP CONE WATER COOLING SYSTEM
|Abstract||Rotary Union for transfer the water from the stationary circuit to the rotary circuit, one half of the system namely Outer Jacket is connected to the stationary circuit flange and the other half namely Inner Jacket is connected to the moving or rotating circuit attached to the equipment and are held in position by means of the two anti-friction bearings,the twin sealing arrangement consists one hydraulic rod seal and one normal 'O' ring, has been provided to prevent the leakage of water from the system at the operating pressure of 10 bar and operating temperature upto 60.|
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to steel manufacturing technology. More particluarly this invention relates to Unique Rotary Joint dial 00 for water service.
Steel making is done by using L.D. Process in Visakhapatnam steel plant. Three numbers of L.D. Converters of 150 T capacity each installed by importing the technology and equipment from USSR for making liquid steel of 3MT/Annum. L.D. Converter is a steel shell lined with refractory lining for carrying out the oxygen blowing in the hot metal bath at 1700 C Temperature. In the process of steel making the entire converter is to be rotated during charging, slagging and tapping operations and also for the running maintenance activities. The vessel of L.D. Converter comprises spherical bottom, cylindrical barrel section and top cone with lip arrangement as shown in fig J, The top cone portion of converter zone is subjected to high temperature erosion because of Heat affected zone and due to high velocity gas entrapped with particles. In the original design, the top cone surface is being cooled by natural air circulation. But because o practical conditions, the cooling has become ineffective. The modern LD known in the art are having water cooling provision for faster heat extraction for top cone zone. Because of design limitation in the design of Trunnion ring supporting the vessel, the adoption of top cone cooling system known in the art is impracticable. An in-situ design with unique water junction boxes and pipe routing and the system is installed at site during the capital repairs. As the overter is required to be rotated 360o, this necessitated for a rotary union to transfer the water from stationary circuit to moving circuit and vice-versa. There are rotary unions known in the art but involves cost (Approximately Rs. 10 Lakhs per union) and time (min. six months) to procure. As the repair action was to be taken on urgent basis, an innovative design of rotary joint is carried out and successfully tested in house in the system and since the system is functioning satisfactory.
It is to be noted that the prior art description give in detail information of the technology, Method, process and system known in the art. It explain the deficiency in the related art And the object of the invention being to overcome or surmount the problem associated With the prior art. This forms the essential feature and the object of the invention.
The inventors have made great effort to provide a system which meet the requirement of the industry and overcome the problem associated in the prior art.
To achieve the above object according to first aspect and feature of the present invention there is provided a system to improve, efficiency,.
According to second aspect and feature of the invention in addition to the first feature the invention comprises a system, which is unique, rugged efficient, economical.

Design of Rotary Joint:
The general standard designs of rotary joints are providing radial bearing and face sealing with spring load or with spherical sealing. In the proposed joint the combination of rod seal a radial seal arrangement is made unlike other joints and end sealed bearings 60262ZR is used for reliable operation. The two numbers entire joint is manufactured and tested in-house with little expenditure of Rs. 10,000 per joint for the procurement of bought out items like seals and bearings. Hie design drawing of rotary joint (PD-SMS-2240) is enclosed for reference. Two numbers of rotary joints are required per converter at the inlet and outlet sections of the cooling system. In total 6 rotary joints are required for the three converters operations will three more as by standby for emergency repairs. Though this design is made for dial 100 size the same thing be worked out for other sizes.

Rotary Union is a technological item to transfer the water from the stationary circuit to the rotary circuit. One half of the system (Part No.l of the enclosed sketch) i.e Outer Jacket is connected to the stationary circuit flange and the other half (Part No.2 of the enclosed sketch) i.e Inner Jacket is connected to the moving or rotating circuit attached to the equipment and are held in position by means of the two anti-friction bearings SKF-6026. 2 ZR. The twin sealing arrangment (as shown in Detail. I of the enclosed sketch) consists one hydraulic rod seal (Part No.4 of the enclosed sketch) and
one normal 'O' ring (Part No.5 of the enclosed sketch), has been provided to prevent the leakage of water from the system at the operating pressure of 10 bar and operating temperature upto 60. The design is made for one size to meet out immediate use and can be extended to all sizes as per the requirement.
1. Simplification of the design: Usual practice is to have been provided to
only available in reputed makes from Germany. The seal is retained in position by a spring and make unreliable for operation. Only radial sealing is provided and eliminated spring from the system.
2. Cost effective: the rotary joints are usually imported from Germany with
exorbitant cost and is made with nominal cost with this design.
1. Ease in design - made possible to manufacture in-house by procuring bought- out standard items like bearings and seals etc.
2. Reduced lead time for procurement - The Unions were made with in 15
days of requirement.
3. Self reliance - The dependency on the imports has been eliminated and the
Union can be manufactured with in the plant.
4. Cost effective for the similar application.
