Also analysis of stored data helps BEML to find out any machine abuse, which justifies saving in warranty cost. q Color graphics LCD screen & bar graph gauges provide high clarity visual information with improved aesthetics. Benefits of LCD gauge include: - No moving parts like pointer needle etc. - Digital gauge free from drift and zero error - Multiple segment LCD indicators will provide wide graduation resulting in improvement in resolution and readability without human error. q TDS interfacing feature makes our dump trucks ready for modern mines management. q □ Provide electronic logging of maintenance history and alert operator for servicing needs. q Presently the auto shut off for engine is developed as a separate module. This feature can be integrated with MFDR at a later date. q The previous generation of instruments required separate electronic modules to perform some of the functions that MFDR perform. As a result system costs are reduced significantly. q As input sensor table is software programmable, the same system can be matched to any vehicle model. q Common set of sensors caters to both data acquisition and monitoring gauges, thereby avoiding duplication of sensors and additional wiring.

PREAMBLE OF THE INVENTION: "MULTI FUNCTIONAL VEHICLE DATA RECORDER"
Presently, mines are upgraded to improve productivity by introducing computerised mine management and high capacity earth moving equipment with state - of - the-art technology. Customer is looking for various strategies to cut down service time & breakdown cost. Hence, there is a need to develop an electronic tool to augment diagnostics and trend analysis.
The multifunctional vehicle data recorder is an electronic tool developed to augment the diagnostics and trend analysis of high capacity earth moving equipment
The system stores equipment history, enabling to identify the cause of failure with electronic logging of maintenance history and is equipped with common set of sensors catering to both data acquisition and Monitoring gauges
THEME:
The system is having the following functional modules as described below.
· DATA RECORDING FOR FAILURE ANALYSIS
All the vehicle parameters are stored on continuous basis at a predetermined sampling rate for a period of 24 hours. Also graphical representation of any parameter with respect to time scale can be displayed to provide trend of particular parameter in order to ascertain cause of failure, pattern of equipment operation and its behaviour.
· BAR GRAPH LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY (LCD) GAUGES
The system has been designed for real-time monitoring of critical parameters as well as storage of data. LCD bargraph gauges have been provided to view current status of operating parameters. Proposed system will be designed to provide similar gauge information using LCD bargraph indicator on circular dial. Whenever any of these parameters exceed the safe operating limits, colour graphics LCD screen displays visual warning through SAE symbols and text messages along with an audio alarm.
· MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT (e-LOG)
System keeps track of vehicle maintenance schedule and reminds the
service requirement whenever due date approaches. It also enables the service
personnel to key in servicing details, which in turn log the data and generatemaintenance report.

· INTERFACE WITH TRUCK DESPATCH SYSTEM (TDS)
Computerised Mine Management is becoming widely popular to perform real time vehicle allotment and monitoring of entire fleet. This system also requires online vehicle health information in order to ensure optimum utilization and functioning without abuse and breakdown. MFDR will be designed to provide necessary data gathered from various subsystems of equipment to interface with TDS.
· DATA SHARING & TRANSFER
Stored data can be easily retrieved and downloaded to PC or a printer through RS232 serial port. Further a provision is made to share information and data from other vehicle electronic modules.

ANNEXURE-B
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
This system record the vehicle parameters such as engine oil pressure, transmission oil pressure, air pressure, radiator water temperature, brake oil temperature, hydraulic oil temperature, engine oil temperature, hydraulic oil filter clog, engine RPM and fuel level
Whenever the set limit for warning is exceeded, the SAE symbol for corresponding parameter is displayed in the GRAPHIC LCD screen. The applicable list of SAE symbol is given in annexure -3. During the abnormal operation, the sampling rate is changed from the 5 minute to 30-second duration. During the normal running, the sampling rate is fixed as 5 minute In addition to the above, it will detect the following & log.
- Vehicle is moving in reverse when body is up
- Vehicle is moving with float off
- Vehicle is moving with parking brake on
- Emergency steering
The unit is having battery back up memory to hold the recorded data in the absence of the equipment battery.
Usually on the LCD display default screen will be displayed. User can invoke the MENU screen by pressing ESC key. There are 4 keys namely ESC, INC, DEC and RTN to operate the various functions which are described below. When user presses the ESC key while default screen is being displayed on the LCD display, the following functions (The functions which are accessed without pass word), which are regularly used, are displayed on the screen.

TREND ANALYSIS SET GAUGE INTENSITY NIGHT OFF ENABLE/DISABLE SERVICE INFORMATION -DIAGNOSIS MESSAGES -

The function PRINT 24 HOUR REPORT is highlighted and can be selected by pressing RTN key. INC and DEC keys can be used to move the cursor bar to the required function and then press RTN key to select that function. If ESC key is pressed, the MENU screen will disappear and default screen will be displayed.
1.2. PRINT 24 HOUR REPORT
In the PRINT 24 HOUR REPORT, the following can be retrieved. The values of analogue and digital parameters can be retrieved upon specification of duration and date. Same values can be transferred to PC or printer through serial port and these values can be viewed in the screen itself


1.3. TREND ANALYSIS :
Graphical representation of vehicle parameters to provide quick view of recorded data. This function is used to view the parameter values in the graphical form. Here Y-axis is represents the selected parameter value and X axis represents the time in hours. User should select the date of the data captured, parameter to be displayed in the graphical form and the duration of the data.
The screen will be as follows when this function is selected. Screen will show the current date and name of all the parameters that can view in graphical form.

User has to enter the date on which he wants to see the data of a particular parameter. Use INC/DEC keys to alter the values and ENTR to select the altered values. Once the Year field is selected, then BOT is highlighted. Now user can use INC/DEC keys to move to required parameter that to be plotted. Press ENTR to select the highlighted parameter. When BOT is highlighted and then ENTR key is pressed the following display appears.

First the hour field of starting time of the duration is highlighted. The starting time and end of the duration displayed is the previous time selected by the user for trend analysis. After the minute field of the duration start time is altered with INC/DEC keys and selected with the help of ENTR key, then hour field of the end time of the duration is highlighted. Once the end time is selected the screen will display the graphical view of the selected parameter for the selected duration on the selected date. Time scale displayed is for one unit on the X-axis. This varies according to the duration entered by the user. Minimum time scale is 10 second per unit. The date and the starting time entered by the user is displayed. Here X-axis 0 corresponds to the starting time entered.


Move to the required intensity level with the help of INC or DEC keys and then press ENTR key to select that intensity level. Else press ESC to go to the main MENU. As the intensity level is varied through INC/DEC keys, the effect can be seen on the gauge backlight. When intensity level 0 is selected, the gauge back lights are switched off.
1.5. NIGHT OFF ENABLE/DISABLE
This function is used to switch off the LCD display during night time. When night off is enabled the display is automatically switched off between 6 P.M. to 6 A.M. When this function is selected the the screen shows the following.

The previously selected status (DISABLE OR ENABLE) is highlighted. The status can be changed by INC/DEC keys and selected through RTN key. When night off is disabled, the LCD back light will be ON always.

2. FUNCTIONS THROUGH PASSWORD PROTECED MODE
SET CURRENT TIME SET CURRENT DATE NO/NC CONFIG. FOR FAULT INPUTS EN/DIS FAULTS TO SHUT OFF ENGINE PARAMETER SCAN HOLD SERIAL PORT CONFIGURATION PARAMETER LIMITS FOR WARNINGS CHANGE PRIVILEGED ID CODE

In the pass word protected menu, the following can be configured for the purpose of matching system for other vehicle, calibration etc
2.1 SET CURRENT TIME
When this function is selected the current time is displayed in hour/minute/second format and the MS digit of time field is highlighted indicating that it can be varied using INC and DEC key. This function is used to set the current time
2.2 SET CURRENT DATE
This function is used to set the current Date
2.3 NO/NC CONFIGURATION FOR FAULT INPUTS
When this function is selected the following screen will be displayed. Name of all the digital parameters are displayed with their sensor switch type.(NC or NO).


2.4 ENABLE /DISABLE TO SHUT OFF ENGINE
2.5 PARAMETER SCAN HOLD :
When this function is selected screen will show all the parameters that can be held for scan. The previously held parameter for scan is highlighted. If no parameters are held for scan NONE will be highlighted. User can choose the parameter to be held for scan by using INC and DEC keys. Use RTN key to select the highlighted parameter for scan hold. Select NONE to release the scan hold. The screen will be as follows.


Air pressure 6 bar
Engine oil pressure 0.8 bar
Transmission oil pressure 25 bar
Engine speed 2500 RPM
2,8 Change privileged ID code
When the last function "CHANGE ID CODE" is being highlighted and then if INC key is pressed , "MORE" is highlighted. If RTN key is pressed, the system will ask for privileged ID code to list all the other functions which are not regularly used. Screen will be as follows.

Privileged ID code is of 4 digit width. Here also maximum 8 ID codes are supported by the system. User can enter the digits with the help of INC/DEC keys. Each digit of the privileged ID code will vary from 0 to 9. After the second digit of the privileged ID code are entered and if that code matches with any one of the 8 privileged ID code, then following functions are displayed on the screen. If entered code is not matched, then message "ACCESS DENIED" is displayed and display returns to the default screen.
3. BAR GRAPH LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY (LCD) GAUGES
The system has been designed for real-time monitoring of critical parameters as well as storage of data. LCD bargraph gauges have been provided to views current status of operating parameters. It provides gauge information using LCD bargraph indicator on circular dial. Using [RTN/HLD GAGE] key provided on the VDU keypad scrolling can be disabled and viewed selected gauges. This option is available when display in main menu only.
3.1 BAR GRAPH LCD GAUGES
The unit is having 3 bar graph gauges to display pressures, temperatures and engine rpm. Analog sensors are used for acquiring various vehicle parameters which are used for monitoring round profile multi segment LCD bar graph black with back lit illumination for night viewing with a provision to change its intensity. The information on the gauge is corresponding to the highlighted symbol. The fig below shows the LCD gauge module.


This module is also equipped with pilot indication for the following;
- Left turn signal
- Right turn signal
- Hi-beam
- Retarder brake applied
With the rapid advancement in electronics, the dashboard instrumentation has undergone considerable changes. The new generation compact liquid crystal display(LCD) indicators very popular and replaced conventional mechanical gauges.
Gauges are developed with 40 segment LCD bargraph positioned in circular dial which are printed with numerical values and colour band is printed on the dial. This helps in easy reading of actual water temperature with higher resolution & the view of the gauges is depicted below.
3.2 SALIENT FEATURES OF THE LCD GAUGES
Ø Circular profile trans-reflective backlit type LCD suitable for panel mountable.
Ø Advance chip microprocessor is used to miniature the circuit design.
Ø Intelligence of programming is used to provide dual information display of
parameter value/ warning indication using single signal source.
Ø Compatibility to interface with a wide variety of sender input like, resistive,
voltage or current.
Ø Backlit LCD instead of the conventional display for good visibility both in the
day & night operation.
Ø Multiple segment LCD indicators will provide wide graduation resulting in
improvement in resolution and readability without human error.
Ø System check is provided to know each segment status during power on test.
Ø Eliminate additional warning sensor.
4. AUDIO VISUAL WARNING
The three levels of warning as listed below is provided for the equipment parameters when it reaches the warning point to caution the operator of the impending problem by using SAE symbols with text message and buzzer.
Level i
Emergency engine shut off alarm (refer point 6.0),stop engine symbol flashes with intermittent Buzzer (1 sec on: 6 sec off)
Level ii
Service alarm for all temperature, pressures & filter clog. The warning symbol
flashes with intermittent buzzer (1 sec on: 6 sec off). In the case of temperature
warning, the following messages are displayed
-in the case of low transmission pressures
* "bring the equipment to neutral and attend the problem"

-in the case of high temperatures
* “run the equipment at low idle until temperature drops to normal”
-in the case of equipment travel without float on
* "equipment is moving without float on"
-in the case of low engine oil level
* "low engine oil level"
