|Abstract||A novel process for the preparation of benzethonium chloride is disclosed. Unlike the known process, the process in accordance with this invention does not employ carcinogenic starting material like carcinogenic bis-chloro ethyl ether. Furthermore, the reaction employs potassium hydroxide as the source of the alkali which helps in getting consistent and higher yields.|

THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION DESCRIBES THE INVENTION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of Quanternery Ammoumum Salt of Benzethonium Chloride.

Benzethonium Chloride is bactericidal cationic quaternary ammonium surfactant used as a topical anti-infective agent. It is an ingredient in medicaments, deodorants, mouthwashes, etc., and is used to disinfect apparatus, etc., in the food processing and pharmaceutical industries, in surgery, and also as a preservative. The compound is toxic orally as a result of neuromuscular blockade.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel and industrially applicable process for the preparation and isolation, hitherto unreported in the prior art, of Quanternery Ammoumum Salt of Benzethonium Chloride.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is the object of the invention to eliminate the drawbacks of the known procedures and to provide a simple and economically feasible process for the preparation of high purity and uniformly stable Quanternery Ammoumum Salt of Benzethonium Chloride. The above object is solved by the following process of the invention. We have developed an efficient process having following advantages over existing processes.
1) Use of Alkali metal hydroxide, more particularly potassium Hydroxide. This process has very fast reaction rate. This eliminates the use of unstable and explosive products like sodamide and sodium Methoxide.
2) The process involves less energy requirement than other conventional processes.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The object of the present invention is achieved by a process for the preparation of stable Quanternery Ammoumum Salt of Benzethonium Chloride, which comprises:
a) Reacting P-T-Octyl Phenol and chloroethanol in presense of potassium hydroxide in step I to give an intermediate compound I;
b) Reacting intermediate compound I with DMC in the presence of potassium hydroxide in step II to obtain intermediate compound II;
c) Reacting intermediate compound II with Benzyl chloride in step III to obtain Quanternery Ammoumum Salt of Benzethonium Chloride (BEC)
All the products have been characterized by their specific XRD graphs, FT IR spectra HPCL analysis and other physical parameters.
