Abstract A muffler cover structure in a motorcycle, wherein said structure has an exhaust muffler (M) disposed on a side of a rear wheel (Wr) includes a muffler body (Mm), and a tail pipe (B) protruding backward from a rear end surface of the muffler body (Mm), and a part of the muffler body (Mm) covered with a muffler cover (C) fixed to the muffler body (Mm), characterized in that the muffler cover (C) is composed of a side portion cover (Cs) having a circular arc shape in lateral cross section and covering at least an outer side surface of the muffler body (Mm), and of a rear portion cover (Cr) integrally formed with a rear end portion of the side portion cover (Cs), covering approximately all over the rear end surface of the muffler body (Mm), and having the tail pipe (P) penetrate therethrough, and the tail pipe (B) is offset to an outside with respect to a longitudinal centerline (L) of the muffler body (Mm) so that a gap (s) in a radial direction between the side portion cover (Cs) and an outer circumferential surface of the muffler body (Mm) becomes maximum at. an outermost side portion of the muffler body (Mm) and that the tail pipe (B) penetrates an approximate center position of the rear portion cover (Cr).

The present invention relates to a muffler cover structure in a motorcycle, in which an exhaust muffler disposed on a side of a rear wheel includes a muffler body, and a tail pipe protruding backward from a rear end surface of the muffler body. [Background Art]

In the above-described motorcycle, one configured such that a part of an outer surface of the muffler body, that is, an outside of an outer circumferential surface thereof and a part of the rear end surface are covered with a muffler cover fixed to the muffler body has been already known (for example, refer to the following Patent Document 1).

In such a conventional structure as described above, the muffler cover covers only a part of the rear end surface of the muffler body, and the tail pipe is directly exposed from the rear end surface. Accordingly, when viewed from the rear or the slanting rear, the muffler cover and the muffler body look
like they do not have a sense of unification on exterior appearance, that is, look like apparently separate and distinct as parts separate from each other, leading to a problem of no good appearance. Furthermore, the rear end surface of the muffler body, and particularly a periphery of the tail pipe can not be sufficiently covered with the muffler 'cover. [0004]
The present invention was created in consideration of various circumstances described above. It is an object of the present invention to provide a muffler cover structure in a motorcycle, which is capable of solving the above-described problems of the conventional structure by a simple structure.
[Means for Solving the Problem]
According to the present invention there is provided a muffler cover structure in a motorcycle, wherein said structure has an exhaust muffler (M) disposed on a side of a rear wheel (Wr) includes a muffler body (Mm), and a tail pipe (B) protruding backward from a rear end surface of the muffler body (Mm), and a part of the muffler body (Mm) covered with a muffler cover (C) fixed to the muffler body (Mm),
characterized in that the muffler cover (C) is composed of a side portion cover (Cs) having a circular arc shape in lateral cross section and covering at least an outer side surface of .the muffler body (Mm), and of a rear portion cover (Cr) integrally formed with a rear end portion of the side portion cover (Cs), covering approximately all over the rear end surface of the muffler body (Mm), and having the tail pipe (P) penetrate there through, and
the tail pipe (P) is offset to an outside with respect to a longitudinal centerline (L) of the muffler body (Mm) so that a gap (s) in a radial direction between the side portion cover (Cs) and an outer circumferential surface of the muffler body (Mm) becomes maximum at an outermost side portion of the muffler body (Mm) and that the tail pipe (P) penetrates an approximate center position of the rear portion cover (Cr) such that the center position of the rear portion cover (Cr) is offset to centerline (L) of the muffler body.

Moreover, an invention of claim 2 is, in addition to the characteristic of the invention of claim 1, characterized in that, in the side portion cover, an inner side portion is cut away while leaving at least a region corresponding to the outer circumferential surface of the muffler body, which is outside more than a vertical plane passing through the longitudinal centerline of the muffler body and on an upper side than a horizontal plane passing through the same longitudinal centerline.

Moreover, an invention of claim 3 is, in addition to the characteristic of the invention of claim 1 or 2, characterized in that a side portion of the side portion cover is engaged with the outer side surface of the muffler body to be detachable in a fore-and-aft direction at a position thereof shifted to one side in the fore-and-aft direction, and is fastened by a bolt at a position thereof shifted to the other side in the fore-and-aft direction, and an upper portion of the side portion cover is fastened by a bolt to an upper surface of the muffler body.

As described above, according to the inventions of the respective claims, the muffler cover is composed of the side portion cover having the circular arc shape in lateral cross section and covering at least the outer side surface of the muffler body, and of the rear portion cover integrally formed with the rear end portion of the side portion cover, covering approximately all over the rear end surface of the muffler body, and having the tail pipe penetrate therethrough, and the tail pipe is offset to the outside with respect to the longitudinal centerline of the muffler body so that the gap in the radial direction between the side portion cover and the outer circumferential surface of the muffler body becomes the maximum at the outermost side portion of the muffler body and that the tail pipe penetrates the approximate center position of the rear portion cover. Accordingly, when the exhaust muffler and the muffler cover are viewed from the rear or the slanting rear, wide ranges of the approximate entire surface of the rear portion and the outer side surface of the muffler body can be covered with the rear portion cover and the side portion cover of the muffler cover, respectively. In caddition, from the rear portion cover, the tail pipe penetrates the approximate center position thereof (that is, substantially coaxially therewith) . Therefore, as a whole, a sense of unification on exterior appearance of the muffler cover and the muffler body can be obtained, the exterior appearances thereof become extremely
good, and marketability thereof can be enhanced. In addition, a sufficient clearance can be ensured between the side portion cover and the outer side portion of the muffler body.

Moreover, particularly according to the invention of claim 2, in the side portion cover, the inner side portion is cut away while leaving at least the region corresponding to the outer circumferential surface of the muffler body, which is outside more than the vertical plane passing through the longitudinal centerline of the muffler body and on the upper side than the horizontal plane passing through the same longitudinal centerline. Accordingly, sufficient heat radiation characteristics of the muffler body can be ensured even by employing the muffler cover in which the sense of unification with the muffler body on the exterior appearance is enhanced as described above.

Furthermore, particularly according to the invention of claim 3, the side portion of the side portion cover is engaged with the outer side surface of the muffler body to be detachable in the fore-and-aft direction at the position thereof shifted to one side in the fore-and-aft direction, and is fastened by the bolt at the position thereof shifted to the other side in the fore-and-aft direction, and the upper portion of the side portion cover is fastened by the bolt to the upper surface of the muffler body. Accordingly, the side portion cover can be fixed and supported to the muffler body stably and tightly while
reducing spots to be fastened by the bolts. In addition, the above-described engagement is performed before the fastening of the bolts, thus facilitating the side portion cover to be positioned to the muffler body, leading to good assembling workability.

First, in Fig. 1, on a vehicle frame F of the motorcycle, an engine E and intake and exhaust systems thereof, a fuel tank T, a fuel supply system which guides fuel from the tank T to the engine side, and the like are mounted. In a front end portion of the vehicle frame F, a front wheel Wf is supported
with a front fork 1 interposed therebetween, and moreover, to an approximate lower center portion of the same frame F, a swing arm SA supporting a rear wheel Wr is pivotally coupled so as to be vertically swingable, and a rear cushion R is interposed between the swing arm SA and the vehicle frame F.

The vehicle frame F includes a head pipe H supporting the front fork 1 so as to be steerable, a down tube DT extended downward from this head pipe H and passing in front of the engine E, a main frame MF tilted somewhat downward toward the rear from the head pipe H, extended backward, passing above and in the rear of the engine E and extended downward, seat tubes ST in

each of which a front end is integrally joined to an intermediate portion of the main frame MF and a rear end side is extended backward, and back tubes BT, each of which couples an intermediate portion of this seat tube ST and a rear portion of the main frame MF to each other. Between each rear portion of the main frame MF and a lower portion of the down tube DT, the engine E is joined and supported, and on the seat tubes ST, a tandem-type seat S and a rear cowl added with a rear fender 8 are supported. Moreover, on an upper portion of the main frame MF, a bottom portion of the fuel tank T disposed so as to straddle the main frame MF is supported.

To appropriate portions (lower portions of the main frame MF in the illustrated example) of the vehicle frame F, step holders 3 are joined integrally therewith. Onto each tip
portion of the step holders 3, a foot rest step 4 for a pillion rider is attached. Moreover, on the tip portion, a muffler support bracket 3a for supporting an exhaust muffler M to be described later is formed integrally therewith. Furthermore, onto the vehicle frame F, side covers 7 covering side portions of a space of the vehicle body immediately under a front portion of the seat S and immediately under the fuel tank T, and under covers 5 covering side portions of a space of the vehicle body immediately rear the engine E, are attached so as to be individually detachable.

From a rear surface of a cylinder head CH of the engine E, an intake pipe IP having a carburetor 6 is extended backward, and to an upstream end thereof, an air cleaner A is connected. Moreover, from a front surface of the cylinder head CH, an exhaust pipe EX is extended forward, and this exhaust pipe EX gently turns backward in the vicinity of the down tube DT and is extended backward below the engine E. To a rear end portion of this exhaust pipe EX, an exhaust muffler M present on the right side of the rear wheel Wr and tilted somewhat upward toward the rear is connected. Onto this exhaust muffler M, a muffler cover C covering an outer side surface and rear end surface of a muffler body Mm thereof with good appearances is attached so as to be detachable.

Next, referring to Fig. 2 to Fig. 6 in combination, specific configurations of the exhaust muffler M and the muffler
cover C will be described. The exhaust muffler M includes the muffler body Mm basically formed in cylindrical shape, and a tail pipe P protruding backward from the closed rear end surface of the muffler body Mm. A front end portion of the muffler body Mm is formed in a taper shape, and an opening front end thereof is integrally connected to a downstream end of the exhaust pipe EX. Moreover, to an upper portion of an outer circumferential surface of the muffler body Mm, at an inward position closer to a front end thereof, a base end portion of a muffler stay
12 is joined (welded in the illustrated example) . A tip portion
of the stay 12 is extended upward, and a tip end portion thereof
is joined to the muffler support bracket 3a of the tip end of
the step holder 3 by a bolt 14 and a nut N with an elastic material
13 interposed therebetween.

The muffler cover C is composed by integrally molding a side portion cover Cs having a circular arc shape in lateral cross section and a rear portion cover Cr by use of heat-resistant synthetic resin, the side portion cover Cs covering an upper surface and outer side surface of the muffler body Mm, and the rear portion cover Cr being integrally formed with a rear end portion of the side portion cover Cs and covering approximately all over the rear end surface of the muffler body Mm. Hence, no seam is formed between the side portion cover Cs and the rear portion cover Cr, and an exterior appearance thereof is good.

Onto the upper surface of the muffler body Mm, a plurality of nuts N' arrayed at an interval in a fore-and-aft direction are fixedly attached by welding and the like. On an upper side wall of the side portion cover Cs, a flat attachment stage 15 dented from an outer surface thereof and bolt insertion holes 16 are provided correspondingly to the individual nuts N' . Hence, by bolts 14' screwed to the nuts N' through the bolt insertion holes 16, the upper side wall of the side portion cover Cs can be joined to the upper surface of the muffler body Mm. [0020]
Moreover, on the outer side surface of the muffler body Mm, at a position (position near a rear end in the illustrated example) shifted from a center thereof in the fore-and-aft direction to one side (rear side in the illustrated example), a hook piece 17 of which tip end is extended backward is fixedly provided, and at a position (position near a front end in the illustrated example) shifted to the other side (front side in the illustrated example), a nut N' is fixedly provided. Moreover, correspondingly to this hook piece 17, on an inner side surface of the side portion cover Cs, an engaged female portion 18 which can be engaged with the hook piece 17 in the fore-and-aft direction so as to be detachable is integrally provided. Furthermore, correspondingly to the nut N' ' , on an outer side wall of the side portion cover Cs, a flat attachment stage 19 dented from an outer surface thereof and a bolt insertion hole 20 are provided. Hence, when a bolt 14' ' is screwed to the nut N' through the bolt insertion hole 20 in
a state where the hook piece 17 is inserted into the engaged female portion 18, the outer side wall of the side portion cover Cs can be joined to the outer side surface of the muffler body Mm.

Moreover, as apparent also from Fig. 5, a curvature radius of the circular arc form of the side portion cover Cs on the lateral cross section is set larger than that of a circular arc form of an outer circumferential surface of the muffler body Mm. In addition, in a state of being set to the muffler body Mm of the muffler cover C, the circular arc form of the former one is offset by a predetermined offset amount s to the outside (right side in Fig. 5) with respect to a longitudinal centerline L of the muffler body Mm.

In the side portion cover Cs, an inner side portion is cut away while leaving at least a region corresponding to the outer circumferential surface of the muffler body Mm, which is outside more than a vertical plane passing through the longitudinal centerline L of the muffler body Mm and on an upper side than a horizontal plane passing through the same longitudinal centerline L (that is, in the illustrated example, while leaving a region enlarged to some extent to a lower side and an inner side (left side in Fig. 5) than the region concerned) . This cutaway portion is denoted by a reference numeral symbol X.

Moreover, the rear portion cover Cr is formed in a circular plate shape including a circular arc surface of the side portion cover Cs as a part of an outer circumferential circular arc. On an outer circumferential edge of the rear portion cover Cr, a front-facing circular-arc flange portion f is integrally formed. Thus, the rear portion cover Cr and the muffler body Mm form a fitting form in which the rear end portion of the muffler Mm is shallowly set into a flat inner space of the rear portion cover Cr.

Then, on a rear surface of the rear portion cover Cr, a ring-shaped chamfered portion r is formed on an outer circumferential portion thereof, and on a center portion thereof, a shallow circular concave area 10 is formed. On a bottom portion of this circular concave area 10, a pipe insertion hole 10a in which the tail pipe P is inserted and through which the pipe protrudes backward is formed. This pipe insertion hole 10a is located as an approximate center portion of the rear portion cover Cr forming the circular plate shape.

The tail pipe P inserted through the pipe insertion hole 10a is fixedly provided to a rear end wall of the muffler body Mm while being offset by a predetermined offset amount E to the outside (right side in Fig. 5) with respect to a longitudinal centerline L of the muffler body Mm. This offset amount e and offset direction of the tail pipe P with respect to the muffler body Mm are equal to the above-described offset amount and
offset direction of the circular arc form of the side portion cover Cr. According to such an offset arrangement of the tail pipe P, a gap s in a radial direction between the side portion cover Cs and the outer circumferential surface of the muffler body Mm becomes maximum at the outermost side portion of the muffler body Mm, and is gradually reduced from the outermost side portion to the innermost side portion. In addition, the tail pipe P becomes capable of penetrating the pipe insertion hole 10a located at the approximate center portion of the rear portion cover Cr substantially coaxially therewith.

Next, an operation of the above-described embodiment will be described. In an operation state of the engine E, the muffler body Mm of the exhaust muffler is heated up to a high temperature. However, the rear end surface and outer side surface of the muffler body Mm are covered with the muffler cover C with good appearances.

Then, the muffler cover C in the illustrated example is composed of the side portion cover Cs having the circular arc shape in lateral cross section and the rear portion cover Cr, the side portion cover Cs covering the upper surface and outer side surface of the muffler body Mm, and the rear portion cover Cr being integrally formed with the rear end portion of the side portion cover Cs, covering approximately all over the rear end surface of the muffler body Mm, and having the tail pipe P penetrate therethrough. Moreover, the tail pipe P is disposed
to be offset by the predetermined offset amount e to the outside with respect to the longitudinal centerline L of the muffler body Mm such that the gap s in the radial direction between the side portion cover Cs and the outer circumferential surface of the muffler body Mm becomes the maximum at the outermost side portion of the muffler body Mm and is gradually reduced as approaching the innermost side portion from the outermost side portion, and that the tail pipe P penetrates the approximate center portion of the rear portion cover Cr. For this reason, when a person looks down at the exhaust muffler M and the muffler cover M from the rear or the slanting rear, respective wide ranges of the approximate entire surface, the upper surface and the outer side surface of the muffler body Mm can be covered with the rear portion cover Cr and the side portion cover Cs of the muff ler cover C . In addition, from the rear portion cover Cr, the tail pipe P looks like penetrating the approximate center position thereof (that is, substantially coaxially therewith). Therefore, as a whole, a sense of unification on exterior appearance of the muffler cover C and the muffler body Mm can be obtained, and the exterior appearances thereof become extremely good. In addition, it is made possible to ensure the sufficient clearance s in the radial direction between the side portion cover Cs and the outer circumferential surface of the muffler body Mm, and temperature increases of the muffler cover C and the muffler body Mm can be restricted effectively.

Incidentally, in the side portion cover Cs, the inner side
portion is largely cut away while leaving at least the region corresponding to the outer circumferential surface of the muffler body Mm, which is outside more than the vertical plane passing through the longitudinal centerline L of the muffler body Mm and on the upper side than the horizontal plane passing through the same longitudinal centerline L (that is, in the illustrated example, while leaving the region enlarged to some extent to the lower side and the inner side (left side in Fig. 5) than the region concerned) . Thus, the muffler body Mm can sufficiently ensure a heat radiation area thereof by reducing a region thereof to be covered and heat-shielded with the muffler cover C (particularly, the side portion cover Cs) to the minimum. Moreover, a person usually looks down at the exhaust muffler M from the rear of the vehicle or the slanting rear thereof, and accordingly, even if such a large cutaway portion X is present in the side portion cover Cs, the muffler body Mm can be covered efficiently and sufficiently while the heat radiation area thereof is being sufficiently ensured.

Although the embodiment of the present invention has been described above in detail, it is possible for the present invention to perform various design changes without departing from the gist thereof.

For example, though the one in which the step holder 3 as a muffler support member is joined to the main frame MF has been shown in the above-described embodiment, m the present

invention, the step holder or the muffler support bracket as the muffler support member may be supported on an appropriate position (for example, the back tube Bt, the seat tube ST and the like) of the vehicle frame other than the main frame MF, or on an on-vehicle part fixed to the vehicle frame or on the engine body.

Moreover, though the one formed of the heat-resistant synthetic resin material has been shown as the muffler cover C in the above-described embodiment, in the present invention, the muffler cover may be formed of other heat-resistant materials (for example, a metal plate, a heat insulating material and the like), or may be formed by appropriately combining (for example, stacking) these materials. Furthermore, though the one in which the side portion cover Cs and the rear portion cover Cr are integrally formed has been shown as the muffler cover C in the above-described embodiment, in the present invention, a configuration may be adopted, in which the side portion cover Cs and the rear portion cover Cr are separately formed, and then joined integrally to each other. Moreover, though the front end of the side portion cover Cs of the muffler cover C terminates at a position near a rear end of a taper-shaped corn portion of the front end of the muffler Mm in the above-described embodiment, in the present invention, a configuration may be adopted, in which the front end of the side portion cover Cs is extended to the front end of the corn
portion so as to be along an outer circumferential surface of the corn portion, and also covers an outer side surface and upper surface of the corn portion sufficiently.

WE CLAIM:
1. A muffler cover structure in a motorcycle, in which an exhaust muffler (M) disposed on a side of a rear wheel (Wr) includes a muffler body (Mm), and a tail pipe (P) protruding backward from a rear end surface of the muffler body (Mm), and a part of the muffler body (Mm) is covered with a muffler cover (C) fixed to the muffler body (Mm),
characterized in that the muffler cover (C) is composed of a side portion cover (Cs) having a circular arc shape in lateral cross section and covering at least an outer side surface of the muffler body (Mm), and of a rear portion cover (Cr) integrally formed with a rear end portion of the side portion cover (Cs), covering approximately all over the rear end surface of the muffler body (Mm), and having the tail pipe (P) penetrate there through, and
the tail pipe (P) is offset to an outside with respect to a longitudinal centerline (L) of the muffler body (Mm) so that a gap (s) in a radial direction between the side portion cover (Cs) and an outer circumferential surface of the muffler body (Mm) becomes maximum at an outermost side portion of the muffler body (Mm) and that the tail pipe (B) penetrates an approximate center position of the rear portion cover (Cr) such that the center position of the rear portion cover (Cr) is offset to centerline (L) of the muffler body.
2. The muffler cover structure as claimed in claim 1, wherein in the
side portion cover (Cs), an inner side portion is cut away while leaving at
least a region corresponding to the outer circumferential surface of the
muffler body (Mm), which is outside more than a vertical plane passing
through the longitudinal centerline (L) of the muffler body (Mm) and on
an upper side than a horizontal plane passing through the same
longitudinal centerline (L).
3. The muffler cover structure as claimed in any one of claims 1 and
2, wherein a side portion of the side portion cover (Cs) is engaged with
the outer side surface of the muffler body (Mm) to be detachable in a
fore-and-aft direction at a position thereof shifted to one side in the fore-
and-aft direction, and is fastened by a bolt (14") at a position thereof
shifted to the other side in the fore-and-aft direction, and an upper
portion of the side portion cover (Cs) is fastened by a bolt (14') to an
upper surface of the muffler body (Mm).
4. A muffler cover structure in a motorcycle substantially as
hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
