A PROCESS FOR PREPARATION OF AN ADHESIVE COMPOSITION AND THE ADHESIVE COMPOSITION

Abstract The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of novel adhesive composition for making paper tubes and as an adhesive for paper and general purpose adhesive which comprises; esterifying polyvinyl alcohol at a pH ranging from 5.0 to 8.0, and temperature in the range from 80 tol20° C to get the gel of tackified polyvinyl alcohol; dispersing 10 to 15 % of a thickening agent water & 5 to 10 % of the gel obtained in step (i) in a high speed reactor to impart thixotropy to the gel;optionally adding 3.5 % of the starch solution;adding 0.5 to 2.0 % of defoaming agents to prevent foam formation during it"s use; adding 0.1 to 2.0 % of preservative to increase the shelf life to get the desired novel adhesive composition of the following constitution: 5 to 10 % Esterified polyvinyl alcohol; 10 to 15 % thickening agent ;optionally 3.5 % of the starch solution; 0.5 to 2.0 % of defoaming agents to prevent foam formation during it"s use; 0.1 to 2.0 % of preservative increase the shelf life of adhesive composition.
Full Text The present invention relates to a process for preparation of an adhesive composition useful for making paper tubes and as an adhesive for paper and general purpose adhesive and to an adhesive composition
More particularly this is an aqueous adhesive solution based on PVOH (Polyvinyl alcohol) in combination with and or without un boiled un oxidized alkali-hydrolyzed neutralized starch.
Use of invention:
The adhesive prepared by the invention is used for the Paper Tube making and
this is the most ideal adhesive.
For Paper making as well if added as an additive or sprayed on the pulp.
This is used as a general purpose adhesive also.
Prior Art:
The adhesives available and known earlier would give only a film forming on the
layers of the paper making it stick together but the adhesive invented by me has
a property of bonding in such a manner that the layers become just one.

The adhesives known so far for making paper tubes or paper gives only a film forming on the layers of the paper, making it stick together, however the novel adhesive of the present invention give a bonding to the paper in such a manner that the layers become just one
Distinctive features of the adhesives of this invention:
The adhesive made has an inherent quality of penetration inside the fiber of Paper and after curing it becomes hydrophobic, there by it gives consistent Comprehensive strength to the product manufactured i.e. Paper or Paper Tubes. The Comprehensive Strength of Paper Tube used to varying even after complete curing but our Adhesive gives consistent Comprehensive Strength after effective application.
Summary of the invention:
Therefore the present invention provides a process for the preparation of novel adhesive composition for making paper tubes and as an adhesive for paper and general purpose adhesive which comprises; esterifying polyvinyl alcohol at a pH ranging from 5.0 to 8.0, at a temperature in the range from 80 tol20° C to get the gel of tackified polyvinyl alcohol; dispersing 10 to 15 % of a thickening agent in water & 5 to 10 % of the esterified PVA gel in a high speed reactor to impart
thixotropy to the gel; optionally adding 3.5 % of the starch solution; adding 0.5 to 2.0 % of defoaming agents to prevent foam formation during it's use; adding 0.1 to 2.0 % of preservative to increase the shelf life to get the desired novel adhesive composition.
Also the present invention provides an adhesive Composition for making paper tubes and as an adhesive for paper and general purpose adhesive Comprising: 5 to 10 % Esterified polyvinyl alcohoho to 15 % thickening agent; optionally 3.5 % of the starch solution; 0.5 to 2.0 % of defoaming agents to prevent foam formation during it's use; 0.1 to 2.0 % of preservative to increase the shelf life of adhesive composition.
Statement of the Invention:
Accordingly the present invention provides a process for the preparation of novel adhesive composition for making paper tubes and as an adhesive for paper and general purpose adhesive which comprises;
(i) esterifying polyvinyl alcohol in a manner as herein described at a pH ranging from 5.0 to 8.0, at a temperature in the range from 80 tol20°C to get the gel of tackified polyvinyl alcohol;
(ii) dispersing 10 to 15 % of a thickening agent of the kind as herein described in water & 5 to 10 % of the gel obtained in step (i) in a high speed reactor to impart thixotropy to the gel;
(iii) optionally adding 3.5 % of the starch solution;
(iv) adding 0.5 to 2.0 % of defoaming agents of the kind as herein described to prevent foam formation during it's use;
(v) adding 0.1 to 2.0 % of preservative of the kind as herein described to increase the shelf life to get the desired novel adhesive composition.
According to another aspect of the present invention the present invention provides an adhesive Composition for making paper tubes and as an adhesive for paper and general purpose adhesive Comprising: 5 to 10 % Esterified polyvinyl alcohoho to 15 % thickening agent of the kind as herein before described optionally 3.5 % of the starch solution'; 0.5 to 2.0 % of defoaming agents of the kind as herein before described to prevent foam formation during it's use; 0.1 to 2.0 % of preservative of the kind as herein before described to increase the shelf life of adhesive composition.
Preferred Embodiements:
In the instant process the Esterification may be carried out by reacting with boric acid or by reacting with borax.
The thickening agent used may be Kaolin, or CaCo3 or the mixture of Kaolin and CaCo3.
The preservative used are selected from Avesion, Proxyl and Formaldehyde.
The defoaming agents may preferably be Foam Master V 1 %.
The phtaf the Esterification reaction preferably may be 4.5 to 5.0.
The borax may be added from 0.3 to 0.5 % to carry out the reaction.
The defoamer used is in the range of 1 %.
The preservative is used in the range of 0.5 gm. To 1.0 gm.
Detailed Description of the Invention:
The adhesive present invention is an aqueous adhesive solution based on PVOH in combination with and or without un boiled un oxidized alkali-hydrolyzed neutralized starch.
All polyvinyl alcohol grades are cross-linkable through their secondary hydroxyl functionality. Even lower hydrolysis grades—which are so exceptional on paper surfaces for oil, grease and organic solvent resistance and Gurley porosity—can be made water resistant. Degrees of water resistance vary from grade to grade. Glyoxal is used as favored cross linker for polyvinyl alcohol. When Glyoxal was added to PVOH significant water resistance improvements resulted. The wet tensile of PVOH ( Poly Vinyl Alcohol ) is increased from no measurable wet strength uncross linked to 6.1 pli when cross linked. Also, the wet tensile of cross linked PVOH was more than double that of uncross linked PVOH, and cross linked PVOH 28% higher than uncross linked PVOH.
Water absorbent kaolin is preferred as inorganic thickening agent this imparts thixotropy. Further more de foaming agents are added to prevent foam formation during its use. Cross- linking agents like boric acid and or Borax is added for tack. Preservative is added to for greater shelf life.
Polyvinyl alcohol resins react in a manner similar to other secondary polyhydric alcohols. Esterification reactions of polyvinyl alcohol can be carried out with a number of compounds. The important reaction is the formation of tackified PVOH using boric acid or borax to form cyclic esters. This reaction is very sensitive to pH, and an insoluble gel is formed above 4.5-5.0.
All polyvinyl alcohol grades are cross-linkable through their secondary hydroxyl functionality. The kaolin or and calcium Carbonate is suspended in water, in a high speed stirring reactor. 3-5% of starch may also be added. The PVOH does contain 1-2% of acetate also. During heating and mechanical stirring foam adding defoaming agent can restrict formation. The major art lies in the reaction of borax /boric acid with PVOH at a particular temperature and PH. Even a variation of fraction of percentage In borax and or Boric acid may result in a very different product. Accordingly thepH ihas to be adjusted.
The composition of the present invention is not a mere admixture but is a synergistic composition resulting in unexpected properties as compared to it's ingredients. No chemical reaction is involved in the formation of the composition.
The adhesive composition of the present invention is prepared by first esterifying polyvinyl alcohol using boric acid or borax at a PH ranging from 5 0 to 8 0 at a temperature from 80 to 120° C to get the tackified polyvinyl alcohol gel; then a thickening agent is dispersed in a range of 10 to 15 % in a high speed reactor to impart thixotropy to the gel; thereafter 3.5 % of the starch solution may be added prior to adding 0.5 to 2.0% of the defoaming agent and 0.1 to 2.0% of preservative to increase the sneli lite of the composition to obtain the final composition.






I, Claim;
1. A process for the preparation of novel adhesive composition for making paper tubes and as an adhesive for oaper and general purpose pdhesive which comprises;
(i) esterifying polyvinyl alcohol in a manner as herein described at a pH ranging from 5.0 to 8 n, at a temperature in the range from 80 tol20°C to get the gel of tackified polyvinyl alcohol;
(ii) dispersing 10 to 15 %of a thickening agent of the kind as herein described in water & 5 to 10 % of the gel obtained in step (i) in a high speed reactor to impart thixotropy to the gel;
(iii) optionally adding 3.5 % of the starch solution;
(iv) adding 0.5 to 2.0 % of defoaming agents of the kind as herein described to prevent foam formation during it's use;
(v) adding 0.1 to 2.0 % of preservative of the kind as herein described to increase the shelf life to get the desired novel adhesive composition.
2 A process.as claimed in claim 1 wherein the Esterification is carried out by reacting with boric acid.
3. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the Esterification is carried out by reacting with borax.
4. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the thickening agent is Kaolin.
5. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the thickening agent is CaCo3.
6. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the thickening agent is the mixture of Kaolin and CaCo3.
7. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the preservative used are selected from Avesion, Proxyl and Formaldehyde.
8. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the defoaming agents is Foam Master V 1 %.
9. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the PH in step (i) is 4.5 to 5.0.
10. A process as claimed in claim 3 wherein the borax added is 0.3 to 0.5 % to carry out the reaction.
11. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the defoamer used is 1 %.

12. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the preservative is used in the range of 0.5 gm. To 1.0 gm.
13. A process for the preparation of novel adhesive for making paper tubes and as an adhesive for paper and general purpose adhesive substantially as described herein.
14. An adhesive Composition as claimed in Claim 1 for making paper tubes and as an adhesive for paper and general purpose adhesive Comprising: 5 to 10 % Esterified polyvinyl alcbhol10 to 15 % thickening agent of the kind as herein before described optionally 3.5 % of the starch solution'; 0.5 to 2.0 % of defoaming agents of the kind as herein before described to prevent foam formation during it's use; 0.1 to 2.0 % of preservative of the kind as herein before described to increase the shelf life of adhesive composition.
15. An adhesive Composition for making paper tubes and as an adhesive for paper and general purpose adhesive substantially as described herein.
