Title of Invention

A PLANT AND METHOD FOR DECONTAMINATING POLLUTED WATER CONTAINING SEWERAGE AND CITY WASTES

Abstract This invention relates to a plant for decontaminating polluted water containing city waste and sewerage. It consists of conveyer means, filtering means for removing large suspended matter from the polluted water, crushing means for crushing the other impurities, settling pans exposed to the environment and means for drawing out the supernatant water from the settling tank for storage or recycle to a water source. The sediments at the bottom of the pan are pulverized and used as cheap manure. This invention also includes a method of decontaminating water using the plant described above.
Full Text This invention relates to a plant and a method for decontaminating polluted water containing sewerage and city wastes.
Environmental pollution is one of the major hazards faced with by every one, though this problem is acute in cities and industrially advanced locations. Atmospheric pollution, noise pollution and water pollution are now tackled on a war footing by many Governmental agencies as well as by private socially active bodies and groups.
Of the different types of pollution water pollution, particularly water polluted with industrial and city waste is the most difficult problem to tackle and solve.
The main objective of this invention is to develop a cost effective plant and method for decontaminating polluted water, garbage and sewerage. This includes removal of suspended particles and recycling or storing of decontaminated water. As water sources are diminishing and demand and requirement of water increasing beyond all calculations, recycling or reuse of decontaminated water assumes great importance. Yet another object and advantage of this invention is that the city wastes such as garbage and sewerage contained in polluted water may be used as cheap and excellent fertilizers and manures. City wastes and sewerage may be collected and mixed with polluted water for processing the same to produce manure.
Decontamination according to my invention is carried out in settling pans exposed to the environment and does not require any energy. Accordingly, the plant and the method are extremely energy efficient.

The plant consists of conveyer means such as pipes for transporting polluted water to settling tanks. Conveyer means are provided with pumps for pumping polluted water form its source. Pumped water is passed through a filter means having large pore size to remove suspended wastes like paper, plastics and the like. This conveyer means is connected to at least one crusher for pulverizing suspended material contained therein in the form of slurry. This slurry is pumped or allowed to flow through pipes into large settling pans with concrete bases. Settling pans are provided with an outlet provided with closure means located above its base for drawing out decontaminated water. Preferably, the decontaminated water is stored in tanks provided therefore and/or led to the original water source. This depends on the degree of contamination in the polluted water and water source.
Size and shape of the settling pans are not of any relevance but must be large and deep enough to allow the sediments to settle at its base. Advantageously, the plant may be located near the water sources.
Method of operation
Polluted water is pumped and passed through a filter of large pore size to remove large suspended matter therefrom. From this point, water is forced through pipes into multiple crushers for pulverizing and producing a thickish slurry. This slurry is allowed to enter plurality of open settling pans provided with an inlet and outlet. The slurry is allowed to stand and be exposed to sunlight for a period till supematant water is clear and the sediments settle at the bottom. Supernatant clear water is drawn out though the outlet pipes and transferred either to the storage tanks or recycled to the original water sources. The sediments are allowed to remain in the pans till completely dry and then removed to pulverizers for production of cheap manure.

This invention relates to a plant for decontaminating polluted water containing city wastes and sewerage comprising conveyer means consisting of pumps and pipes for drawing water from a water source, filter means connected to said conveyer means for removing large suspended impurities from the incoming water, plurality of crushers connected in series to crush fine suspended pollutants to form a slurry, said conveyer means connected through valve means to at least one settling pan open to sky, said pans being provided with an outlet for discharge of decontaminated water which leads either to a storage tank or to the water source, means for collecting and pulverizing the sediment formed at the bottom of said settling pans for use as manure.
The invention also includes a method for decontaminating polluted water containing city waste and sewerage and preparing manure from the impurities contained therein comprises pumping and conveying water and garbage from a water source through conveyer means, removing large suspended impurities therefrom by passing the same through filter means, preparing a slurry by passing the polluted water containing suspended impurities through crushers, allowing slurry to settle in open settling pans till the supernatant water is clear, drawing supernatant water therefrom for storage or recycling to a water source, allowing the sediments to dry before pulverizing the same for use as cheap manure.
The settling pans may be divided into small compartments for easy operation.
Optionally bleaching powder may be added to the settling pans to prevent any smell which may emanate there from.

The single figure in the accompanying drawing is a schematic representation of the plant according to this invention. Storage tanks and pulverizers are not shown in the figure. Reference letters CP stands for conveyer means with pumps and F for filter means for removing large suspended matters like plastics. Cr1, Cr2 and Cr3 are crushers while reference letter T is for the settling pans and B represents its base. Reference letters 10 and 00 stand for inlet opening and outlet opening for the settling pans, which may be divided into smaller compartments.
