Title of Invention

"A SLOTTED BOOM FOR A CRANE."

Abstract This invention relates to a slotted boom for a crane comprising of a main boom provided with a least one extendable and slidable boom therein, wherein the main boom is disposed with a longitudinal slot so as to allow at least one hook attached to the end of the first extendable boom to travel therein. (Fig. 2)
Full Text FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a slotted boom. In particular, this invention relates to a slotted boom for use in a crane.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
Booms for use a crane are as such known in the art. Such booms normally have at least one hook firmly held to the boom through a bracket. The hook is adapted to carry the load. It would be apparent that as the boom is operated into and inclined position, the load can only be raised to a fixed and limited height. To obviate such a disadvantage, it is also know to have two hooks fixedly held to the boom. Though the provision of two hooks does to a certain extent reduce the disadvantage of a single hook, it has been fourd that such a construction still possesses restrictive applications.
Another construction known in the art and now normally employed in cranes comprises a main boom with a least one additional boom retractable disposed within the main boom. Though a an inclined position of the main boom, and with the retractable boom extended outwardly, the hook of the retractable boom can only be provided at the end of the retractable boom, and consequentially attended with disadvantage.

OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION
An object of this invention is to propose a novel construction of a novel boom for use in a crane.
Another object of this invention is to propose a boom for use in a crane which has a least one retractable boom.
Still another object of this invention is to propose a boom for use in a crane which has at least one retractable boom, which obviates the disadvantages of the prior art.
Yet another object of this invention is proposing a boom for use in a crane which has at least one retractable boom, which is efficient.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent from the ensuing description.
STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided a slotted boom for a crane comprising of a main boom provided with a least one extendable and slidable boom therein, wherein the main boom is disposed with a longitudinal slot at its bottom plate, extending from the free end on the main boom or from the proximity of the free end of the said main boom, so as to allow at least one

hook attached to the end of the first extendable boom, or on the bottom surface of the first extendable boom, to travel therein.
SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
Present invention describes an invention relating to the provision of a longitudinal slot at the bottom plate of the main boom of a crane, wherein the boom assembly of the crane preferably comprises of the main boom (or the outer boom) and at least one boom extension. On the bottom plate of the main boom, just before the position of the longitudinal slot, one hook is firmly secured/welded. The proposed longitudinal slot is of two types: open and closed.
The length of the proposed longitudinal slot is approximately 2 meters or according to the position of the hook secured on the bottom part of the first extendable boom, which travels inside the said longitudinal slot.
A slotted boom, as proposed herein, is helpful in regulating and handling a load and its height more smoothly and effectively. By installing one hook at the free end of the first extendable boom or near the free end of the first extendable boom, at the bottom plate therein, it is possible to move/slid the said hook of the first extendable boom forward as well as backward (practically called as INCHING of the hook) by simply regulating the respective lever at operator's cabin. It is important that the said movement/inching of the hook of the first extendable boom can be performed even if it is in loaded condition and no unloading is required, reducing the

working in loading/unloading therein. Such manner of operating a crane with slotted boom and its load therein supports the easy and improved working at critical sites. In case of forward/outward inching of the hook of first extendable boom, the height of the hook block increases and consequently the load carrying capacity decreases gradually and vice- versa.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWING
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent from
the ensuing description when read in conjunction with the accompanying
drawings and wherein:
Fig. 1 Shows: sectional views of the slotted mother boom.
Fig. 2 Shows: sectional views of the first and second extendable boom.
Fig. 3 Shows: bottom plate of the mother boom.
Fig. 4 Shows: an exemplary embodiment of slot of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO ACCOMPANYING DRAWING:-
Reference may be made to fig. 1 wherein a boom (1) provided according to this invention for use in a crane comprising at least two extendable booms (2 and 2') (as shown in fig.2) disposed within the main boom (1) and adapted to slide therein, a slot (3) extending from the free end or from the proximity of the free end of said boom, at least one hook fixedly held to said first extendable boom and adapted to move within said slot.

In accordance with this invention, the boom comprises a main boom having at least one hook held thereto for carrying of a load. Alternatively, such hook may not be provided with the main boom. Such features of main boom are known in the art. An extendable boom was provided with the main boom, which is similarly known in the art. However, a disadvantage associated with the known construction having an extendable boom is that the hook provided with the extendable boom, and whereby the load bearing capacity is reduced in comparison to that of the present invention.
Such a disadvantage is obviated by the present invention in that a longitudinal slot (3) (As shown in fig.3) is provided in the bottom plate (1) of the main boom so as to allow the hook (3', fig.2) of the first extendable boom to travel therein. Accordingly, the extended boom can be extended outwardly to any length and the hook travels within and outwardly of the slot.
Due to the formation of the slot, a reinforcement (4) is provided in the main boom (1) surrounding the main slot, preferably on the inner side of the bottom plate of the main boom (1).
The longitudinal slot (3) created at the bottom plate of the main boom (1), wherein the length of the slot is usually approximately 2 meters from the free end of the main boom. The length of the proposed longitudinal slot is according to the position of the hook secured on the bottom part of the first

extendable boom, which travels inside the said longitudinal slot. The slot (3) is of two types: Open type and Closed type.
The Open type slot is created on the bottom plate of the main boom (1), wherein the said open type slot starts from the free end of the main boom (1). In such case, usually one hook of the first extendable boom is secured/welded at or near the end of the extendable boom, at the bottom part therein. Optionally, at least one another hook of the first extendable boom is secured/welded on the body part of the said extendable boom, at its bottom plate. Due to open type slot, hook installed at the end of the first extendable boom may travel slightly inside the said slot of the main boom (1) and thus the main boom and the first extendable boom get well-accommodated together. At the same time, the hook(s) at the bottom plate of the said first extendable boom travels freely, beyond the slot.
The closed type longitudinal slot is closed at the end part of the main boom (1), at its bottom plate. That is, the closed type slot starts at the proximity of the free end of the main boom but not from the free end. Therefore, the hook(s) are secured on the body of the bottom plate of the first extendable boom and not at the end of the said extendable boom. The length of the closed type longitudinal slot is decided in such a manner that the hook(s) of the first extendable boom moves freely, throughout the length of the slot and during such movement of the hook(s), the movement of the said first extendable boom does not get restricted.
A distinct advantage derived by the construction of the boom of the present invention is that the lifting height of the load can be increased substantially to

that of the known art. Furthermore, the load carried by the moving hook can also be increased because of the decrease in the radius with respect to the pivotable point of the boom.
Main feature involved with the slotted boom is the inching of the hook of first extendable boom does not require any manual/physical operation towards unloading/loading etc. and it is performed very easily by the operator only. Secondly the provision of a slotted boom practically does not require multiple hooks, welded at the bottom plate of the mother boom. Accordingly we amend the details of the complete specification.
It is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications, adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant embodiments employing the concepts and features of this invention are intended to be within the scope of the present invention, which is further set forth under the following claims:-
