AN IMPROVED INTELLIGENT MODEM FOR METERING APPLICATION

Abstract An Improved Intelligent Modem for Metering Application (IIMMA) is to provide electrical utilities with the facilities to serve its consumers, single or three phase, distribution transformer metering etc. with load monitoring, control of load connection or disconnection, meter reading and relevant other activities automatically from a remote place. The system monitors the energy consumption and other parameters of a customer on a pre-defined (programmable) basis and sends relevant data to control station of utility. Utility processes the received data and conveys necessary instructions automatically to IIMA system for subsequent action. In - built modem in conjunction with microcontroller based controller section executes necessary data exchange and execution of required functions i.e. meter reading, latching relay control, GPRS etc.

FIELD OF INVENTION :-
The invention describes an Improved Intelligent Modem for Metering Application based on Wired or Wireless communication means. The unit is to provide service to the utilities/service providers of electrical energy/gas/water /liquids / air with remote meter reading of stored parameters, monitoring of different field conditions and execution of relevant subsequent actions based on the receipt of different parameters from consumer meters and its accessories.
The complete unit as referred in the enclosed drawing as Exhibit No.l comprises of following functional blocks :
1. Modem for wired or wireless communication e.g. GSM / GPRS /
CDMA / PLCC / RF / PSTN / WiFi / Wi Max etc.
2. Intelligent Control System, based on micro controller, comprising of :
a. Inputs and Outputs:
i) Inputs from field sensors.
ii) Outputs for disconnection and other relevant operation,
b. Interface for meter data collection.
c. Interface for wired or wireless communication.
3. Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) •:- Suitable enough to cater to DC
power requirement of the unit using ac supply (1 ph/3 ph) as the input
The system thus is capable to monitor load and different other
parameters based on the information received from consumer end

through wired or wireless communication. These data can be collected on regular intervals or continuously employing preprogrammed auto call mode. Now based on the received data the system can ensure necessary action automatically (i.e. output control / monitoring signals) in interaction with the utility recommendation. It is also provided with continuous broadcast facility of meter data parameters in real time, through GPRS or other modes.
The system developed is to accumulate data and different other field information for individual customer at a pre-programmed time interval or continuously, if required, and send the accumulated data to control station of utility through wired or wireless communication section of the unit. Now control station of utility processes the received data and transmits necessary information for the intelligent system. On receipt, this data is processed at system end and relevant instructions are transmitted for further necessary operational activities.
EXISTING SCENARIO FOR METERING SYSTEM:-
There is no metering system using modem for data registration, data storage and automatic broadcasting of the data in real time to the utility centre for subsequent action and to carry out necessary field activities based on instructions from utilities.
However the current system of metering is as follows :

Meter reading, monitoring, load connection or disconnection is carried out manually by visiting the consumer premises. In some case, even if data is down loaded automatically using Meter Reading Instrument (MRI), then too visiting the customer premises can not be avoided, because physical connection of MRI is required with meter for data down loading. Analysis of these captured data is carried out manually for corrective actions. The corrective actions are also carried out manually.
PROBLEMS WITH EXISTING METERING SYSTEM :-
1. Consumer meter (electrical/ gas / water / liquid / air) reading, load
monitoring, supply and miscellaneous other jobs are carried out
manually by physically visiting the consumer premises.
2. The existing system is not capable of broadcasting of meter data in
real time to the utility. The data collected manually, is rather difficult
to analyse for management purposes.
3. The instance of meter misuse or manipulation cannot be traced out
without physical verification. The system is further attributable to
human errors.
HOW THIS INVENTION SEEKS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS:
The invention of an "Improved Intelligent Modem for Metering Application (IIMMA)" relates to metering application employing wired or wireless communication means. The unit is to provide service to the

utilities of electrical energy / gas/ water liquid / air with remote reading of stored parameters in meter, monitoring of different field conditions and execution of subsequent relevant actions. It is also provided with continuous broadcast facility of meter data in real time.
Since most of the jobs are carried out automatically using wired or wireless communication e.g. GSM / CDMA / GPRS / PLCC / RF / PSTN / WiFi /Wi Max etc., there is hardly any requirement of manpower movement, hence very much cost effective. The communication being automatic, execution of the job is very fast and chances of human errors are almost eliminated.
The invented design is shown conceptually in Exhibit No. 1 as under: Exhibit No. 1:
The invented Improved Intelligent Modem for Metering Application (IIMMA) consists of micro controller based intelligent control system with Modem, facility to communicate with Electric Energy / Gas / Water /Liquid / Air Meter, for data collection, interface for inputs from field sensors and outputs for disconnection and other relevant actions. The complete system runs from single / three phase ac power employing its inbuilt SMPS supply.
The illustration shown in Exhibit No.l is only representative to show the invention. There could be numerous versions of this invention in shape or

size and configuration depending upon the specific use and the system can be operated by other mode of mobile communication.
Therefore, many apparently different embodiment of the present invention could be made without departing from scope and spirit thereof, it is intended that the description of the invention stated herein be interpreted as being illustrating only and not limiting in any manner whatsoever.

The Improved Intelligent Modem for Metering Application (IIMMA) consists of micro-controller based intelligent control system with wired or wireless modem, with facility to interface with electric Energy/ Gas / Water / Liquid / Air meter for data collection, interface for field sensors, data logging and outputs for disconnection and other relevant action. The complete system runs from single or three phase ac power supply employing its built - in SMPS section.

Statement of invention:-
An Improved Intelligent Modem for Metering Application constitutes of micro controller based control system for remote reading of stored data in the meter, monitoring of different field conditions through its input ports and execution of relevant subsequent action through its output ports employing wired or wireless communication modems.
The system is comprising of:
1. State of the art micro controller based system for wired or wireless meter
reading of consumer load, broadcasting of meter data in real time employing
GSM/CDMA/GPRS/PLCC/RF/PSTN/WiFi/Wi Max etc. based wired or
wireless communications for monitoring of data.
2. Built in SMPS Connects common mains supply of single phase or three phase
to the system.
3. Input field sensors facilitate interfacing with outputs for disconnection and
relevant actions.
4. A supply disconnection device for controlling of consumer load based on
commands received through Modem section.
5. Meter connected to the system through hardwired or optically isolated serial
communication port for data collection.
6. Data recorder to download data through CMRI using designated hardware
facility.

1. An Improved Intelligent Modem for Metering Application is comprising of:
- State of the art micro controller based system for wired or wireless meter
reading of consumer load, broadcasting of data in real time employing

- A supply disconnection device for controlling of consumer load based on
