Abstract	A transmitter is disclosed for transmitting a digital information signal via a transmission medium (TRM). The transmitting device comprises Encoding means (6) arranged to generate portion of the output signal in the from of encoded portion of the digital information signal under the influence of a control signal of a first type, and arranged to generate portion of the output signal in the from of portion of the digital information signal under the influence of a control signal of a second type, Control means (12) for generating the control signal, Means (18) for generating a first identification signal indicating that the output signal possibly includes a portion of the digital information signal which has been encoded in the encoding means or indicating that the output signal does not include any portios of the digital information signal which have been encoded, and for generating a second identification signal in dependence on a control signal and the first identification signal and combining means (22) for combining the output signal of the encoding means, the first identification signal and, if the first identification signal is of a first type, the second identification signal so as to obtain a composite signal to be applied to the transmission medium. The invention provides a composite signal with a minimal number of bits.
