Every community produces both liquid and solid wastes. The liquid portion -wastewater - is essentially the water supply of the community after it has been fouled by a variety of uses. From the standpoint of sources of generation, wastewater may be defined as a combination of the liquid - or water-carried wastes removed from residences, institutions, and commercial and industrial establishments, together with such groundwater, surface water, and storm water as may be present.
If untreated wastewater is allowed to accumulate, the decomposition of the organic materials it contains can lead to the production of large quantities of malodorous gases. In addition, untreated wastewater usually contains numerous pathogenic, or disease-causing, microorganisms that dwell in the human intestinal tract or that may be present in certain industrial waste. Wastewater also contains toxic compounds. For these reasons, the immediate and nuisance-free removal of wastewater from it sources of generation, followed by treatment and disposal, is not only desirable but also necessary in an industrialized society.
There are several methods of treating the domestic / municipal /industrial wastewater. Certain parameters, which are on higher side in raw wastewater needs to be, reduced according to the pollution control board's norms by giving specific treatment. One of them is to supply the oxygen for removal of BOD i.e. Bio-chemical Oxygen Demand. This is achieved by different methods of Aeration like surface aeration or by diffused aeration etc. that requires external power to drive the aeration mechanism, natural air draught is a method used in Bio-Towers where aeration is achieved without using external power.
The Trickling Filter with incorporation of plastic media now called as 'Bio-Tower' is now getting popular day by day as the same is extremely efficient while the same occupies lesser plot area, require much less power. Natural air draught is a method used in Bio-Towers where aeration is achieved without using external power.

The principle of Bio-Tower is very simple and logical. The Bio-Tower pertains to the attached growth type of treatment. On the Bio-Tower waste is fed from the top, the microorganism within the wastewater gradually develops a colony over the surface of plastic media, which provide stability and higher surface area. In this process temperature within Bio-Tower goes above the ambient temperature and the hot air within the Bio-Tower is released from top (because it is light). Obviously to substantiate air loss within Bio-Tower, fresh air rushes from bottom of Bio-Tower and therefore a cycle of air movement is formed, which fulfills the air requirement of Bio-Tower to the greater extend.
Thus as stated above, there are several methods for removing BOD in respective units of particular technology adopted for treating the wastewater, However, we have carried out detail study / survey of Bio-Tower with Forced Aeration for removal of BOD in attached growth technology Bio-Tower/s with natural draft or with forced aeration from bottom may be available but Bio-Tower with powerless forced aerators installed on top of tower is new concept which we have developed.
By adopting Forced Aeration in Bio-Tower Technology, limitations due to natural air draft will be removed and plant will operate at better performance without spending any amount on power for aeration within Bio-Tower.
According to this invention a Forced Aeration technique in Bio-Tower Technology is introduced by providing a non-conventional and eco-friendly wind-operated air exhaust mechanism at the top of the Bio-Tower. Because of the normal wind speed the wind-operated air exhaust mechanism rotates and removes air inside the Bio-Tower, allowing fresh air to enter from the bottom of the Bio-Tower. Thus, introducing a wind operated air exhaust mechanism at the top, forced aeration is achieved and oxygen from fresh air supplied is used to remove the BOD.
The above process is achieved by providing Cover and Forced Aeration through
wind operated air exhaust mechanism on the top of conventional Bio-Tower, which is

operated by wind speed thereby increasing circulation of air and also resulting in improving the quality of effluents, which is better than the conventional Bio-Tower. No additional power is required for the movement of the air as this is achieved by wind operated air exhaust mechanism at the top.
The FAC Bio-Tower Technology is a modification of Trickling Filter Technology which is used for treatment of Industrial, Domestic / Municipal Waste. The influent is fed on the top of the tower and with the help of media placed within the tower, microbiological growth is obtained which helps in treating wastewater to acceptable level of pollution. We have invented a method, which improves performance without significant increase in its cost and eliminating all the drawbacks in the system.
The invention includes the following :-
1) About Forced Aerated Covered (FAC) Bio-Tower :
a) The FAC Bio-Tower may be of any size, any geometric shape and
dimension.
b) The FAC Bio-Tower will consist of any type of media viz. stone / plastic or of any type of biodegradable material.
c) Covering may be of dome shaped / pyramid shaped / conical shaped or combination of all / any type of geometric shape.
d) Covering may be of any type of material including ferrous / non ferrous / plastic / FRP / Tarpaulin / HDPE / LDPE with or without supporting structure.
2) Installation of air exhaust mechanism over the cover to remove the air within
covering:
a) The function of air exhaust mechanism is to remove the air within the covered portion of FAC Bio-Tower may be by exhaust / ventilator / extractor or by any other mechanism / equipment working for removing air within the covering
and operating on conventional or non conventional energy.

b) The exhaust mechanism may be of any material and may be of ferrous / non-ferrous / plastic / FRP /Tarpaulin / HDPE / LDPE.
This invention, which is unique and introduced first time, enables -
a) Maintenance of temperature
b) Guaranteeing aeration under any climatic condition
c) Controlling foul smell / odour
d) Improving aesthetics of the tower
e) Restricting footprint size
f) Controlling sludge volume
g) Restricting contact of harmful ultraviolet raise with plastic media
This invention guarantees better quality than mentioned in Indian Standards of final effluent without any significant addition in operation cost.
This invention, due to cover and forced aeration controls temperature. This invention reduces maintenance manpower and thereby making overall system very much user friendly.
According to this invention, therefore, an improved Bio Tower for treatment of waste water comprises media placed in the bio tower, an opening at the bottom of the said media for fresh air to enter inside the said tower upwards through the said media, a collection sump at the bottom of the said tower to collect the treated water, a dome shaped cover for the purpose of covering the top of the said bio tower and an exhaust mechanism by means of a wind ventilator at the top of the said cover to remove air inside the said cover.
The present invention is illustrated in fig.l of the accompanying drawing. In the said fig.l, numeral (1) shows the Bio-Tower of the invention (FAC). Numeral (2) shows the opening in the Bio-Tower at the bottom of media. Numeral (3) shows the
