A OCTAGONAL CLINCHED DRUM TOP
The invention relates to a octagonal clinched drum top. More particularly the invention relates to a octagonal clinched drum top which is clinched with the flanges to prevent leaking of the contents inside due to any external impact in any orientation.
Drums made from mild steel of 205 liters or 55 gallons employ threaded drum closers which is a standard in world market as a standard product and various countries have now adopted the same by their national standard.
ISO has come out with draft standard. Following are the specification numbers of this product.
INDIA : IS 1784
JAPAN : J IS - Z 1604
U.S.A. : PP - 420 - B
GERMANY : DIN 6643
I.S.O. : ISO/DIS 15750 - 3
STANDARD PRACTICE :
Octagonal flange and round plug with capseal for leak prrof and temper proof fittings are as exhibited in Annexure 1 and 2. Assembly and sketch of typical cross section is also enclosed in Annexure 3 and 4.

In the conventional assembly to avoid the leakage there are three stages :
1. Gasket provided on flange seals leakage between flange and drum top.
2. Gasket provided on bung/plug prevents leakage between flange.
3. Lining on capseal prevents leakage from leaky bung. Capseal also prevents tempering of drum to retain the quality of product inside the drum.
Conventionally drum tops are made from mild steel which are fitted with internally threaded flanges that ere curled on the drum top with gasket in between to provide leak proof assembly. If during the handling of filled drum there is impact then drum top and flange may separate easing off pressure and rubber gasket thus causing leakage.
Also duing reconditioning the drum is burnt to obtain clean surface inside. During the burning process the flange gasket gets burnt out and therefore sealing is lost.
The reconditioner has two options now one is to change drum top and other is to use a reconditioned bung but the second option prevents sealing of the drum.

The clinching prevents seperation of the top sheet from octagonal flat portion of flange, thereby pressure on flange gasket is not released, hence no leakage.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an octagonal

clinched drum top to protect sealing of drum during impact and to allow reconditioner to maintain same drum head by use of recondition bung and octagonal capseal.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a octagonal 1 clinched drum top which is pilferproof with a special octagonal cap seal.
Accordingly there is provided a octagonal clinched drum top (1) refer Fig. 3 comprising the drum top (1) which covers the flanges (2) the said flange (2) curled over the neck (3) of the drum top. Flange has inner threading The invention will now toe described with reference to Fig. 1 to 6 in the accompanying drawings.

Fig.1 is a plan and sectional view of the conventional drum top.
Fig.2 is a sectional view of a octagonal clinched drum top before drop testing and after drop testing.
Fig,3 is a plan and sectional of a octagonal clinched drum top.
Fig.4 is a plan and sectional view of octagonal clinched drum top, with recondition bung and octagonal topseal.
Fig.5 is a 58mm cap seal of clinching assembly.
Fig. 6 is 50mm flange clinching die assembly.
A comparision between octagonal clinched drum top and conventional drum top for drop test as under t-
After the insertion of the flange and assembling drum with drum shell the drum is tested for leakage test after filling the with specified amount of water and then drop it for specific height.
For particular orientation of the drum with respect to the closure opening conventional drum top separates from the flange thereby easing pressure on flange gasket and thereby causing a leak. A clinched drum top however prevents separation of drum top from the flange thereby not allowing leakage take place.

It is desired to patent special clinching process of fitting
flange on drum top die (fig.6) and special octagonal capseal to
crimp on octagonal face shape of the drum top that goes over flange and tool for crimping this capseal (Fig,5) Fig. 3 shows drum head with clinched flange wherein by special die, drum top goes over and under the flange so that in case of impact it does not separate from flange and cause flange gasket to leak. When drums are to be reused they are burnt during reconditioning causing flange gasket to burn. Leakage can be stopped from bung opening as well as from the portion between drum head and flange by use of reconditioning bung. Recondition bung is given in Fig. 4 and drawing of the assembly is also shown in Fig. 4. However, in conventional system when recondition plug is used drum cannot be sealed with a conventional capseal. In the new system invented, the octagonal crimp shall allow a special octagonal capseal to be used over reconditioning plug so that sealing shall be made possible therefore drum reconditioner of actagonally clinched drum head need not take off drum head and fit in new head during reconditioning.
A octagonal clinched drum top alongwith its capseal will improve the reliability of the leakproofness of existing drum particularly in cose of accident and will improve pilferproofness also. The present invention thus effectively can be used for preventing the leakage by separation of drum top from the flanges due to sudden impact. The use of recondition plugs alongwith

special octagonal capseal is also a unique feature whereby the replacement of drum top is avoided at the time of reconditioning. Therefore, the invention is cost effective, easy to manufacture above all retains the goodwill of the manufacturer.
This is an embodiment of the invention. Several modifications are possible may be considered within the ambit and spirit of this invention. Since many modifications, variations and changes in detail may be made to the above described embodiments, it is intended that all matters described in the foregoing description as described in the accompanying specification.

Claim:
1. A pilfer proof octagonal clinched drum top (1) comprising the drum top (1) which covers the flanges (2) the said flange (2) the said flange (2) curled (4) over the neck (3) of the drum top which have inner threading (5) and extends below the drum top at right angle (6); the said drum top clinched (7) over the octagonal base of the flange there is provided a gasket (8) in between the flange and the drum top which is of any resilient material preferably rubber provided in a leak proof manner so that leaking is prevented from a sudden impact due to the dropping of the drum in any orientation; reconditioning carried out when the resilient material is burnt down.
2. A pilfer proof octagonal clinched drum top as claimed in claim 1 wherein a sealing cap of a octagonal shape can be crimped over the flanges as well as the octagonal portion of the drum top which gives a permanent gripping thereby preventing pilferage.
3. A pilfer proof octagonal clinched drum top as claimed in claim 1 wherein it is reconditioned and the reconditioned plug is reused without replacing the whole drum top.
4. A octagonal clinched drum top as claimed in claim 1 and substantially herein described the accompanying drawing.
