---|---|
Abstract | An ignition coil for use in internal conbustion engines comprising a core and a yoke; a secondary and a primary winding, the secondary winding being wound around the core, characterised in that the primary winding is disposed side by side with , and close to the secondary winding, said primary winding being wound around the yoke. |
Full Text | This invention relates to an ignition coil for use in internal combustion engines* Among the ignition coils known to the art are coils wherein the primary winding is disposed within the secondary winding (hereinafter also called the A type) and wherein the primary winding is disposed outside the secondary winding, end to enri (hereinafter also called the B type>- The advantage of the A type is that it has better loaded performance than the B type -The advantage of the B type, however, is that i t furnishes higher arc duration than the A type - The B type is of greater length than the A type by virtue of its end to end construction and this is a disadvantage, while the A type, although of less length, is bulkier than the B type by reason of the "one within the other" const rue t i on. An object of this invention is to propose an ignition coil which has the length advantage of the A type, but not its bulky construction; and which furnishes a longer* arc duration, as in the case of the B type - The ignition coil proposed herein also requires less lamination material. The igni t ion coi1 for use in internal combustion engines, according to this invent ion, comprises a core and a yoke; a secondary and a primary winding, the secondary winding being wound around the core, characterised in that the primary winding is disposed side by side with, and close to, the secondary winding, said primary winding being wound around the yoke. This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate, in FIQB 1 and 2 respectively, the A and B types o-f the known ignition coil and, by way o-f example, in Fig .3, an embodiment o*f the proposed ignition coi1. Fig -lil lustrates the A type o-f the known ignition coi1 wherein the secondary S wi11 be seen to be wound around the primary P• The primary P itself is wound around the core C- The B type of the known ignition coi1, however, has the primary P and the second ary S d isposed end to end, as i1lustrated in Fig.2. The A type wi11 be seen to have a shorter coi1 assembly 1ength L1 than the B type whose coi1 assembly 1ength is L2- While the shorter length LI is an advantage, the "one within the other" construction of the A type makes the assembly thereof bulkier than that of the B type. However, the A type has better loaded performance• On the other hand the advantage of the B type is that it furnishes longer arc duration - In the ignition coil proposed herein, the primary P is not disposed within the secondary S Cas in type A) nor end to end Cas in type B) but is kept side by side with respect to the secondary S, with the primary wound on the yoke Y (Fig-3). Consequently, the ignition coi1 proposed herein will be seen to have a shorter coil assembly length L3 than the B type whose coil assembly length is L2; a less bulky construction than the A type the primary and secondary windings are spread out instead of being one within the other); and a more compact construction than the B type, coupled with the advantage that the proposed construction furnishes a longer arc duration than that furnished by the A type. Again, the proposed ignition coil requires less lamination material for its manufacture and can be conveniently incorporated in control units. The terms and expressions in this specification are of description and not of 1 imitation v there being no intention in the use of such terms and expressions of excluding any equivalents of the features i1lustrated and described, but it is understood that various other embodiments of the ignition coil proposed herein are possible, without departing from the scope and ambit o-f -this invention. We Claims 1 -An ignition coil -for use in internal combustion engines comprising a core and a yoke; a secondary and a primary winding, the secondary winding being wound around the core, characterised in that the primary winding is disposed side by side with, and close to, the secondary winding, said primary winding being wound around the yoke. 2-An ignition coil -for use in internal combustion engines substantially as herein described wi th reference to, and as i 1 lust rated in, Fig .3 o*f the accompanying drawings.
