Title of Invention

A HANDLE ACCESSORY FOR REMOVABLY HOLDING A SOCKET

Abstract A handle accessor)' for removablv holding a socket is provided. The accessory has a square head holding member one end having a hollow body defined by an upper plate and lower plate. A hollow body square head is fitted into the lower plate. A spring loaded press is pin fitted on the upper plate having a projection piece extending into the hollow of the square head. The projection piece secures a trapped ball in a seat having a plane surface and an arcuate surface. The ball projects from an aperture in the square head and, the planar surface of the seat abuts and pushes the ball through the aperture of the square head and the ball is retained in the aperture by the tension of the spring. A HANDLE ACCESSORY FOR REMOVABLY HOLDING A SOCKET
TAPARIA TOOLS LIMITED of A-2/423-424, Shah & Nahar, Lower Parel (W),

This invention relates to a handle accessory for removable holding a socket.
Different types of sockets are used for different jobs. Sockets require different accessories depending on the use which can be inserted into the square head of the handle arm whenever necessary and removed after the work is over to be replaced by a different socket. Different types of conventional sockets include bi heaxagonal, hexagonal, heavy duty, long series and the like.
A square head is an intermediate piece, which is fitted in a handle arm extending from a handle. A socket for use is mounted on the square head. The function of the square head is to provide grip for the socket and transfer the torque from the user gripping the handle for rotating the socket.
An object of this invention is to provide a unique mechanism for quick release of the socket mounted on the square head and for firmly locking a socket on a square head when ready for use thereby permitting easy engagement and disengagement of the socket from the square head.
2

According to this invention there is provided a handle accessory for removable holding a socket consisting of a handle having a rubber grip at one end and a square head holding member extending from the handle at the other end the said member consisting of a hollow body defined by an upper plate and lower plate riveted together, a hollow body square head fitted into the lower plate, a moveable and displaceable spring loaded press pin fitted on the upper plate having a projection piece extending into the hollow of the square head, the said projection piece of the pin securing a ball in a seat having a plane surface and an actuate surface, the said ball being trapped between the seat contour and the inner wall surface of the hollow of the square head, the ball moving from one operative configuration in which the ball projects from an aperture in the square head and, the planar surface of the seat abuts and pushes the ball through the aperture of the square head and the ball is retained in the aperture by the tension of the spring, effectively locking the ball in the aperture and an arcuate bulge of the ball projects from the surface area of the square head to firmly lock a socket mounted on the square head by snugly fitting into a groove scored in the hollow fitting end of the socket to a second operative configuration in which when the press pin is pushed forwards, the ball no longer lies in the arcuate surface of the seat, the ball is therefore displaced inwards and the socket can be quickly released from the square head.
3

The invention will now be described with reference to the drawings accompanying the provisional specification.
Referring to the drawings, a handle accessory for sockets is generally indicated by the reference numeral 100. The accessory 100 includes a handle 1 having a rubber grip 2 at one end and a square head holding member 20 extending from the handle 1 at the other end. The member 20 consists of a hollow body defined by upper plate 5 and lower plate 6 riveted together as particularly seen in figure 3 by rivet 10. A hollow body square head 22 is fitted into the lower plate 6. A moveable and displaceable press pin 13 is fitted on the upper plate having a projection piece extending into the hollow of the square head 22. The press pin is spring loaded by spring 7.
The projection piece 24 of the pin 13 secures a ball 9 in a specially designed seat 26 having a plane surface and an arcuate surface. The ball is trapped between the seat contour and the inner wall surface of the hollow of the square head. In an operative configuration the ball 9 projects from an aperture in the square head as shown in figure 1 and 4 of the accompanying drawings. In this configuration as seen in Figure 4, the planar surface of the seat abuts and pushes the ball 9 through the aperture 28 of the square head and the ball 9 is retained in the aperture 28 by the tension of the spring 7, effectively locking the ball 9 in the aperture 28 and an
4

arcuate bulge of the ball projects from the surface area of the square head.
In the operative configuration as seen in Figure 5, a socket 30 is mounted on the square head. The socket 30 has a specially designed groove 32 scored in the hollow fitting end of the socket. As particularly seen in Figure 5, the ball 9 locks the socket to the square head by snugly fitting in the said groove or slot 32. As can be easily understood with reference to figure 5, when the press pin is pushed forwards, the ball no longer lies in the arcuate surface of the seat, the ball is therefore displaced inwards and the socket can be released from the square head.
While considerable emphasis has been placed herein on the structures and structural interrelationships between the component parts of the preferred embodiments, it will be appreciated that many embodiment can be made and that many changes can be made in the preferred embodiments without departing from the principals of the invention. These and other changes in the preferred embodiment as well as other embodiments of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein, whereby it is to be distinctly understood that the foregoing descriptive matter is to be interpreted merely as illustrative of the invention and not as a limitation.
