Full Text This invention relates to an automatic gas stove, that is to say, a gas stove which comes into, and goes out of, operation on failure, and resumption, of electric power supply.
For instance, when electrically operated heating apparatus ceases to operate whenever there is electric power failure, the gas stove proposed herein immediately and automatically goes into operation to provide the requisite heat; and also immediately and automatically goes out of operation whenever electric power supply is resumed.
The gas stove proposed herein has an inbuilt safety feature which prevents gas supply to the burner of the stove in cases where the gas is not ignited, as will be clear from the following further description of this invention.
According to this invention, the automatic gas stove for coming into, and going out of, operation on failure, and resumption, of electric power supply to a load, comprises a gas stove provided with a microcontroller; a pipe line connecting a source of gas to the bumer of the gas stove ; a normally closed valve provided in the pipe line for allowing flow of gas to the bumer only when activated by the microcontroller; an igniter for igniting the gas at the bumer, by operating at least once, only when activated by tfie microcontroller; a flame detector for detecting a flame at the bumer, the microcontroller activating the ignitor and the valve whenever there is failure of electric power supply, but closing the valve and deactivating the ignitor, whenever (i) no flame is detected at the bumer even after activation of the ignitor or (ii) whenever the elecWc power supply is resumed.
The term "microcontroller" in this specification means and includes not only a microcontroller as such, but also relay logic, semiconductor logic or PLC (programme logic control).
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings the single Figure in which illustrates by way of example and not by way of limitation one of preferred embodiments of the gas stove proposed herein.

The gas stove G is provided with a microcontroller M. The pipe line P connects a source S of gas to the burner B of the stove G.
A normally closed valve, such as, a solenoid valve V is provided in the pipe line P. The outlet at O of the source S is left open. The flow of gas through the pipe line P is thus stopped at the valve V unless the valve is activated by the microcontroller M to open and allow such flow to the burner B.
An igniter J (either electrically or electronically operated) and a flame detector F are also provided for the bumer B.
Assuming that electric power supply is on, the valve V is closed, the igniter J is off. There is no gas flow to the bumer B.
Assuming now that electric power is off, the microcontroller M (which will now be powered by a battery E) activates the igniter J and after a small delay activates the valve V to open the gas from the source S to flow to the bumer B through the pipe line P. On the igniter J being activated, the gas at the bumer B gets ignited and begins to bum, to provide the necessary heat. The flame detector F detects the flame at the bumer B. The valve V continues to remain open the gas stove fumishes the requisite heat.
Whenever electric power is resumed, the microcontroller M deactivates the valve V to close it and also deactivates the igniter J. The microcontroller M now runs on electric power and the battery E gets charged.
On the other hand if, when electric power is off, the igniter J on and the gas flow on, the gas fails to ignite after a predetermined period of time, the "no flame" state indicated by the flame detector F causes the microcontroller M to deactivate the valve V and the igniter J. No gas now flows to the bumer B.
Optionally, after another predetemined interval of time, by which interval remnant unbumt gas at the bumer would have evacuated, the procedure repeats.

Thus, the microcontroller M once again activates the ignitor J and after a small delay activates the valve V to open the gas flow to the burner B. If the gas is not ignited after the aforementioned predetermined period of time, the same cycle repeats to a state where the ignitor J and the valve V are deactivated.
The optional procedure of attempting to ignite the gas can be repeated any desired number of times, although it is preferred to repeat the procedure twice.
When the gas fails to ignite after the predetermined interval of time abovementioned after the first attempt or after the last of the optional repeat procedure, the microcontroller M deactivates the ignitor J and the valve V ; and energises an alarm informing the user that there is a system fault, to enable connective action to be taken.
The alami can be audible or visible or a combination of both e.g. a buzzer, a blinking light or both, together with a display message.
The temns and expressions herein are of description and not of limitation, there being no intention in the use of such temns and expressions of excluding any equivalents of the features illustrated and described, but it is understood that various other embodiments of the automatic gas stove are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention.
