AN IGNITION COIL DEVICE FOR AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

Abstract An ignition coil device for an internal combustion engine compressing ligation coil having primary and secondary fil dings, suppressor resistor, LT term anal and HT term anal, all the foregoing being accommodated in housing, characterised in that the said housing has a built-in socket in which a spark phage is snugly receivable in elect cal contact wittier the HT terminal located within the housing.
Full Text This invention relates to an ignition coil device for internal combustion engines.
The conventional ignition coil assembly comprises an ignition coil having primary and secondary windings, LT terminal (low voltage terminal) HT cord (high tension voltage cord) suppressor resistor and spark plug cap.
However, the drawbacks with the known ignition coil assembly is that the ignition coil assembly is provided with a HT cord which is fixed to a HT connector having suppressor resistor and HT terminal provided for connecting on to the spark plug.
As a consequence of the conventional structure of the ignition coil assembly, there is a voltage loss in the HT cord due to capacitance effect. The HT cord also acts as an antenna in transmitting electromagnetic waves, causing electromagnetic interference.
Generally, the conventional ignition coil assembly is cumbersome in that there are two units, namely, the ignition coil unit and the other the HT connector, with the HT cord in between, resulting in assembly becoming a time consuming m attar.

The ignition coil device proposed herein, however, seeks to eliminate or at least substantially minimize the above mentioned drawbacks, as will be clear from the following description.
The ignition coil device for an internal combustion engine according to this invention, comprises an ignition coil having primary and secondary windings, suppressor resistor, LT terminal and HT terminal, all the foregoing being accommodated in a housing, characterised in that the said housing has a built-in socket in which a spark plug is snugly receivable in electrical contact with the HT terminal located within the housing.
This invention will now be described with reference to the
accompanying drawings which illustrate in:
Fig.l the known ignition coil assembly
And
Fig.2 and Fig.3, by way of example, one of the possible
embodiments of the ignition coil device proposed herein with
spark plug attached and without spark plug attached
respectively.
Referring to Fig. 1 the known ignition coil assembly will be seen to comprise an ignition coil having primary and secondĀ»'y windings P and S, LT term inal L and HT cord H in contact

with the HT terminal F. The HT cord is positioned outside Unit A of the ignition coil assembly and is connected by Unit B of the said assembly, namely, the HT connector to the spark plug Y of the engine. R is the suppressor resistor for reducing electromagnetic interference.
As a consequence of the above mentioned arrangement of the conventional structure of the ignition coil assembly, there is a voltage loss in the HT cord H due to capacitance effect. The HT cord also acts as an antenna in transmitting electromagnetic waves, causing electromagnetic interference.
Furthermore, the conventional ignition coil assembly referred to above is cumbersome in that there are two units, namely, the ignition coil unit A and the other the HT connector unit B with the HT cord H in between, resulting in a time consuming assembly.
On the other hand, referring to Fig.2 wad Fig.3 it will be seen that while the ignition coil device comprises an ignition coil having primary and secondary windings P2 and S2, suppressor resistor R2, LT terminal L2 and HT terminal F2, all the foregoing being accommodated in a housing Ā£, the said housing has a built-in socket M in which a spark plug Y2 is snugly receivable in electrical contact with the HT terminal F2 located within the housing.

The HT cord H and the HT connector T are thus eliminated in the device proposed herein with consequent benefits and advantages over the known ignition coil assembly.
The device proposed herein is compact and is easily installed in place.
J is a fixing bracket for fixing the device to an adjoining structure such as the engine body.
The terms and expressions herein are of description and not of limitation inasmuch as various other embodiment of the device proposed herein are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of his invention.

We Claim:
1. An ignition coil device for an internal combustion engine
comprising an ignition coil having primary and secondary
windings, suppressor resistor, LT terminal and HT terminal,
all the foregoing being accommodated in a housing,
chvacterised in that the said hoes has a built-in socket in which a spark plug is snugly receivable in electrical contact with the HT terminal located within the housing..
2. An ignition coil device as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the
housing is provided with a fixing bracket.
3. An ignition coil device for an internal combustion engine
substantially as herein described and illustrated by reference
to Fig. 2 and 3 of the accompeuiying drawings.
