A METHOD OF MANUFACTURE OF VIRIFIED BONDS, WITH ENHANCED STRENGTH, FOR GRINDING WHEELS

Abstract A method of manufacture of vitrified bounds. With Bihanced strength, for grainding wheels comprising the steps of mixing a known bond with a substance selected from rate earth materials and refractory composition which are non-reactive with the said bond. such as stabilized and unstabilized zlrconia. up to 7.5% to throweight; mixing. the same Unoroughly. before sievinng ugh fine meshes for ensuring breaking of lumps. if any.
Full Text This invention relates to a method of manufacture of vitrified bonds, with enhanced strength, for grinding wheels.
Xt is well known in the art that only the relative composition of frits and clay or the use of different frits are effective in controlling the strength characteristics of vitrified bonds. These changes normally result in totally different varieties of bonds.
The method proposed herein enhances bond strength and the performance of the bonds without altering their major characteristics,,
The additives to the standard bond are selected from any one of the rare earths or any refractory oxides such as any form of zirconia both stabilized and unstabilized. These substances are added to the vitrified bond up to 7.5 % by weight, more preferably, around 6%.
The additive and the bond are mixed thoroughly in a

suitable mixer depending on the uniformity achievable. The bond is sieved through fine meshes to ensure breaking of the lumps, if any.
The method of manufacture of vitrified bonds, with enhanced strength, for grinding wheels, according to this invention, comprises the steps of mixing a known bond with a substance selected from rare earth materials and refractory compositions which are nan— reactive with the said bond, such as, stabilized and unstabilized zirconia, up to 7-5% by weight; mixing the same thoroughly, before sieving through fine meshes for ensuring breaking of lumps,, if any.
EXAMPLE I A standard bond used for aloxide grains was mixed with yttrium oxide in the ratio 95:5. The bond was sieved through fine meshes to ensure breaking of lumps. Grinding wheels were made with this modified bond and compared with standard wheels.

EXAMPLE I.t
A standard bond used for SiC grains. was mixed with
12 mol % ceria-stabilized zirconia in the ratio of
94:6, The bond was sieved through fine meshes to
ensure of breaking of lumps. Grinding wheels were made with this modified bond and compared with standard wheels.

wear are indicative of a tougher bond than standard.
The terms and expressions in this specification are of description and not o-f limitation, there being no intention in the use of such terms and expressions of excluding any equivalents of the features illustrated and described, but it is understood that various other modes of carrying out the method proposed herein are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention.

We Claim:
1. A method of manufacture of vitrified bonds, with enhanced strength, for grinding wheels comprising the steps of mi Ming a known bond with a substance selected from tare earth materials and refractory compositions which are non—reactive wi th the said bond, such as, stabilized and unstabi1ized zirconia, up to 7.5% by weight; mixing the same thoroughly, before sieving through fine meshes for ensuring breaking of lumps, if any.
2.A method of manufacture of vitrified bonds. with enhanced strength, for grinding wheels substantially as herein described and i1lustrated by the Examples.
3.Vitrified bonds, with enhanced strength, for grinding wheels, whenever manufactured by a method as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims.
